I just thought he cut open and reached into the womb because that's the only place he felt his mother's warmth.

Travis Spazz That, and I think it was the same purpose of why his hands were comforted by Mai in that fantasy. He wants comfort and warmth. He longs for it. Maybe if he uses his hands (symbolic for regret, guilt, etc.) to "feel around" in his dead mom, it could "wash the blood off" so to speak. Also, I think it's notable that the womb and infancy in general has a theme: innocence. It's a reoccurring theme in literature and in art that you need to become infantile to become innocent. Julian wants to wash his hands of the guilt by making them innocent again. He wants a second chance.

In my opinion, the womb/cutting scene represents Julian's rebirth. Birth starts with the womb. And after this, Julian begins to change as a person, which is pretty much the definition of rebirth. Julian has his guilt and horrible past removed, and is now a different person.

Thank you so much for this - you really elevated the film in my eyes. I did love the extraordinary cinematography, but the story fell flat for me, until I watched this. Some thoughts: 1) The karaoke is crucial to me because it does show that sort of God-worship .. Chang does brutally horrific things, yet everyone still worships him - that's crucial for a God-metaphor. 2) The torture scene - the Bible has many references to lost men who have eyes but don't see, and ears but don't hear (Isaiah 6:10 / Jeremiah 5:21 / Ezekiel 12:2 / Matthew 13:15 / Acts 28:27 / Romans 11:8) 3) Womb scene - my immediate thought while watching the scene was of Julian wanting to return to the womb, return to innocence (pre-birth), or just a sort of desire to see "where I came from" - I can't think of any other way to interpret it. Upon seeing his dead mother, he has no emotional response.. to him, she is just the source of his birth, his incubator.. but nothing more. 4) The arms/hands - another Bible reference - "if your arm causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. Better to lose one of your limbs than your whole body go into hell (Matt 5:30) - This is an unmissable metaphor - the works of our hands are our sins. Julian's act of (allowing) the cutting off of his arms is an act of repentance.

This is a great movie. Just watched it for the third time a week ago. I love how Chang understands the difference between psychopaths and people on the wrong path. I love how he endures the mother trying to talk her way out of her fate and then delivers her fate. Chang is fate. And fate comes for everybody.

  • @andres65080

Four things I'd like to mention 1) I think an important aspect that you might have missed is the difference between Julian's and Billy's sexual impulses. Notice that Billy can't control his own impulses, and forcibly takes sex from a girl by raping her, while Julien has his arms tied down and watches Mai touch herself. Complete opposites, and I am convinced that it means something, possibly tying in with point number 2, although i'm not sure how. 2) Originally, I had not perceived the relationship between Julien and his mother as having been previously involving some incest, but now that I think about it, I think that is what makes the most sense. The scene where Julien cuts open his mother and reaches inside of her, could be like his "revenge" on his mother for possibly violating him sexually, so he is violating her dead corpse. This is what makes the most sense to me. 3)You didn't talk about the colors. It is obvious that Refn was trying to reference the contrast between Blue and Red, which are usually perceived as opposites, much like black and white are (another color contrast scheme Refn referenced, but not quite as heavily as black and white.) The most Red place in the movie is the fight club, and It leads me to believe that that is a direct reference to Hell, and the most Blue place in the film is wherever Chang sings karaoke, and that could be a direct reference to Heaven. 4) You also didn't talk about the Bible scripture which says something along the lines of "If your hands cause you to sin, better to cut them off and sin no more, then to have them and continue sinning." This is HUGE, and would explain tons of the movie, and I am surprised you left it out. Especially considering that the scene that you referenced that you say had too much violence, also references the cluster of verses "If your eye causes you to sin, better to pluck it out, then to continue sinning." Step your analyzation game up Chris!

Rambo Stallone I've read the WHOLE of Rob Ager's analysis. I agree with some parts of it, such as the parental abuse subtext in the scene with Mr. Deltoid, but I feel like he was being too objective with some other parts, like he KNOWS that this is exactly what Kubrick intended when he set up the shot. Not necessarily the parts where he says that Alex was faking that the Ludovico Technique had worked, but more the parts that he insists were dream sequences (I also don't like how he seems to dismiss and belittle the source material). Also this is gonna sound SO weird, but can we debate here? I'd really love to discuss this book and film with someone.

i really liked your interpretation however, in my opinion, i feel like that last vision Julian had was just that, and that out of everyone, he's the only one who gets out without losing an arm. when he challenged Chang to a fight and wasn't killed after he lost, i pretty much took that as it being "settled" between the two. instead of ordering a hit like his mother did, he was respectful in challenging Chang to a "fair" fight without weapons, which is the way god intended us to fight, without the sin or murder. (#andrethegiant, #princessbride) that action was the final verdict that confirmed to Chang that he was a good man so he wasn't going to kill him. Julians problem is that no matter what he does, he sees himself as a bad person, even though Chang/god has already forgiven him. he can't get away from it, this is the damage a mother like that could really do to their son.

Having rewatched the movie a number of times since then the scene with Julian cutting open his mom's stomach and reaching in seems to fit with an earlier scene of her saying she could have gotten an abortion. It's like he wants to be unborn. How his life is so broken he doesn't want to exist. It even first with the 'wanna fight' scene in a sense that he's resentful of the fact that he's alive.

Four things: #1- I love this movie. #2- I don't buy into the mother being the devil. God doesn't punish the devil. The devil is a force of nature. The devil is supposed to be evil by design. It's human beings that have to make the choice to be good or evil, and they are the ones God punishes/forgives. The mother was just a shitty human being. #3- I do buy into the womb stuff. I do think Julian is in a way trying to return to the womb in that scene. He associates the womb with comfort and his hands are the symbol of his guilt and need the comforting the most. That's why all his sexual fantasies involve his hands and not his dick. It's kind of like when a son scrapes his knee and his mother kisses it better. #4- Does anyone know what Julian whispers in the scene with his mother after getting his butt kicked by Chang? In direct response to when she says "I don't understand you and I never will". I've rewatched it 50 times and it's still indecipherable to me. It sucks because this is the first time the mother actually shows some vulnerability, fear, acceptance, humanity, etc. The first time we can actually sympathize for her, but we can't hear what Julian says which limits our understanding of his reaction to his mother's pivotal words. :(

Very interesting review. Refn has stated in an interview that he wanted to create a "mythological creature" in the form of a man, that does not live by the laws of man, but follows a more divine code. According to Refn, the first appearance of this character is in Valhalla Rising as One-eye the savage warrior. The second appearance of the character is the Driver (Ryan gosling) in Drive, and the third appearance is Chang in Only god forgives.

I absolutely loved this movie, everything is so surreal (nightmare/dreamlike) when Chan is doing the Karaoke it seems like he is singing in front of the most emotionless crowd a performer could possibly encounter, maybe it's god performing in front of his angels without care of whether they liked it or not but all had to be there for him to have an audience

The crowd had bland, polite, interested expressions, just like I imagine angels would have in heaven. They're soulless manifestations of God's will, not complicated free-will creatures, like humans. The only interesting angel, Lucifer, got smacked down for showing a little bit of backbone. God sings off-key? No matter. Just smile politely, or he may smite you, or some shit. In the Abrahamic world, mankind lives with a gun to its head. Sure, you can "exercise" your "free will", as long as you sit down, shut up, and do as you're told.

Yes, I gave it a 3/5 to troll my friends who thought it was perfect. really I thought it was somewhere between a 3.5 or a 4. Solid film, but edged out by OGF and Drive. I would put it in front of Bronson. The cinematography made many of the scenes look like a magazine spread. Many of the weirdest scenes were done in a way that would fit in print better than film, which was intended. It was not truly about the fashion industry or modeling, it simply used that as a way to talk about the human condition, much like Aronofsky's Wrestler was not about staged wrestling. Good movie, the effed up parts did ot really freak me out because I had a hard time taking them seriously. The film was less horrifying, like OGF, and more of a cult horror/satire. You will laugh more than cringe, even though it does not use any traditional comedy style, it clearly has a self awareness and sense of humor. One complaint is what I have of all Refn films, he takes the plot minimalism too far. David Lynch is a similar stylist, but he keeps more development in.

  • @ghoulish6125

    @ghoulish6125

Nathaniel Matychuk Haven't seen it yet myself, thanks for remaining spoiler free. I agree with your points about his minimalism and the reference to Lynch. Oddly enough me and a friend were talking about that very same thing about two days ago. Lynch himself has a peculiar way of making movies more about tone than most other elements, but it never hinders the plot or requires less of one. I'll have to gauge Neon Demon for myself when I see it, but for Only God Forgives, I feel as though it works perfectly for what he intended. It was a very simple idea itself and could easily have gotten its point across in a short film, but Refn made it work in its entirety. I was hoping the same could be said for his latest release. When I watch it, i'll come back to give you my thoughts, if you were to even care. Cheers!

I've always found it interesting, in those scenes, how every listener in the room is photo-still, with the exception of the fish in the fish-tank. The humans listening don't even twitch like one naturally would when trying to sit as still as possible. Seems the karaoke is God speaking to living beings, the way God does in most religions, giving them virtues, warnings, etc. Either the humans are unnaturally still because they are listening to God, and the fish don't know to stay still, or the humans are staying still because they are unresponsive. That humanity doesn't listen or respond to God's voice. Only the fish do. I go back and forth between these two possibilities. I can't decide. What do you guys think about how frozen the listeners are?

Great Movie!! when he shot the guy in Chang's house, there is a 'break in the chain' (his mother being the cause of all his faults), he at this point takes a stance against his mother (representing a demon), thus, shooting her subject (guy intending to kill the little girl) and saving the little girl. He takes the sword of "The Angel of Vengeance", to do god's work (he intends to kill his mother). Thus, when he finds her dead, he still stabs her. The hand in the womb thing is more of an idea, it's not meant to be specific as such but just a representation of his origin. The womb being once his home, he feels home inside or it could be to get a greater understanding why his mother said 'it felt different inside', when she was pregnant with him (I actually think there both simultaneous emotions his feeling, as that's what I felt watching). That's just my interpretation, this whole movie is great because of the interpretation everybody can make from it, the movie is what you make of it. The understanding of the movie is more emotional than logical explanation, you either feel the emotions it evokes or you don't. It's very much like Kubric's '2001', it's meant to make you 'feel understanding' rather than anything else (if one does understand the movie, one is not quite sure why they do, THEY JUST DO), you just simply feel a sense of common understanding.

julians hands are his biggest disappointment right? he killed his father with them that much is told to us but what if thats what he used on his mother too? rather than sex or anything, cause his mother seemed uninterested in his dick anyway because "billys is bigger", so where im going with this is maybe the womb scene is julian putting himself inside his mother again, maybe she said deeper or something, i think he wouldve done this because he didnt understand what it was he was supposed to be doing for his mother but he still wanted to please her, she is his mother after all, and therefore because he not only spared his brothers killer, saved the little girl, but was also able to fogive his mother (by still trying to give her what he thinks she wants) he has been forgiven. also i think the title is very interesting, Only god forgives, that brings me to the question is chang really god? or is julian? because Chang deals justice, he is more like the hand of god, julian openly forgives his brothers killer, and chang by saving his child (and myabe his mother) maybe julian is god, his hands are his creations and chang by extension (being another one of his hands) and the movie is not about julian seeking redemption, but seeking purpose or freedom from his own creations, which are his biggest disappointments (see opeinging statement) ooo im actually excited now im gonna go watch it again

I just saw the movie for the first time. Due to the massive negative backlash I heard I almost didn't want to see it. I bought it on Blu Ray nonetheless and gave it a try. I expected the worst because I heard so much nagging. I really enjoyed it. First of all I think there is more than enough dialogue. I honestly didn't think that it would have that much dialogue. I expected the movie to be a violent and colorful slide show. I think the movie has some marketing problem though. I expected it to be like Drive and center Gosling. While Gosling is a vital part I personally think the movie revolves around the police chief (?) and his way of dealing with crime. Gosling isn't the main character. He's a main character but not THE guy. Any ways I really enjoyed the film and I will rewatch it. It's very intriguing and tbh neither difficult nor complex nor artsy. It's just a way different from of telling a story. I honestly felt reminded of some Old Boy scenes. I think you should watch the movie without any expectations and especially without the expectation of seeing Drive 2 or even an action film.

No, Julian is THE guy. It's a story about him coming to terms with his own guilt and finally attaining God's "forgiveness" in the end. Julian is the character with the arc, not God/Chang. Chang is just a force of nature doing what he does best, dishing out his brand of "forgiveness" by lopping off the limbs of sinners.

Also, I think use of light and tone is really important in the hand scenes. When he sees his hands in the red light beneath the fighter, it's in a moment when he wants to fuck shit up, to do bad stuff. But later, when he sees his hands in blue, it's in a moment of regret, and while he's longing for a relationship, so that represents his good side. And that's the same scene that he sees blood in his hands, which I think symbolizes his actual feeling of there being blood on his hands. So again, his sense of regret. And then later, when he sees his hands at the end before they're chopped off, the overlying color palette and tone is very white, and this is when he's accepting punishment for his sins and being forgiven, fresh and clean and new, hence the white tones.

The womb thing made me think of an occasional pitfall of being to specifically analytical about art. It may not be a rigid allegory or specific symbol, it may just be an emotional moment resistant to articulation. Similar to poetry not always being specific symbolism, but rather a certain evocation of emotion that does not fit specific language. If you dig deep into that character's head, and feel the moment with him, I think it summarizes an emotion without any specific symbolism.

I think his mother wasn't the devil but a demon and the same goes for his brother.. He's born and bred among demons and finally lashed out killing his father and escaping his mother.. but these demons always haunt him.. When he tries to have a new sexual experience he's haunted by his incestual relationship with his mother finds it such a terrible sin he that he needs redemption for and first sees god.. He fears god, he's angry with him, while at the same time wants love/forgiveness from him.. The movie is essentially about a man torturing himself with his past looking for a future where he is redeemed of his sins and is happy

The end for me isn't symbolical. For me it's that Chang saw what happened at his home and tracked down the guilty killer of two people (guard and maid) to confront him in the strip club. Julian accepts his fate and they move to a remote area for his punishment. It could be a crude "culture thing" to cut off the arm of a murderer and both arms for two murders. It also reminds me a lot of the ways Yakuza members are punished.

It is about the son who is away from home and his family (like field soldier), The lyrics clearly cried for going back to the homeland and mother. This might add why Julian was drawn to Chang singing.

Truly beautiful film! I just watched this, I enjoyed it somewhat but feel like I need to go back and explore it again, which interestingly is what I needed to do for Drive and now I love that film. Great analysis, I figured the 'uterus' scene was representative of the oedipus complex in him wanting to penetrate his mother, and in some ways to satisfy her as her brother might have done. Like I said I need to watch it again, and the cinematography and art design will surely be enough reason to check it out multiple times!

I'm glad they left out the scene with armless Julian. Every one was given a chance to redeem themselve by Chang, but almost no one did the right thing. Julian challenged him openly. He wanted to be judged. He understood that he is a fucked up person, he wanted normal live unlike his brother. Also, look at the final scene. It's very tranquil, it's full of light and peace unlike all others that are dark, busy and violent. Julian suffered enough, both in the film alone and during his whole life. When Chang was listening to what Julian's mother had to say, he was not only judging her, he was figuring out how much guilt does Julian really carries around, is it his own guilt, or someone elses. He sees that everything that Julian does is not really his guilt, he is forced to do bad things, and he suffers, he wants to be a better person. Also, I think that he knows somehow about what happens at his home. And he understands that Juliand needs no punishment, but forgivness, he needs to be freed from his guilt and that's why he kills his mother - because she's the root of everything evil in Julian. The last scene is purely symbolic. It just shows that Chang freed Julian from his guilt, that without his mother trying to drag him into darkness, he can have a nolmal life and try to be like God himself(that's what the ening scenes with him and statue are about). Making the last scene too literal would overcomplicate the movie and make it end on a lower note.

I believe the scene with Julian cutting his mother's body at the end is a scene about penetration. I think, in their youth, the mother had relations with the older brother but not Julian. He was never allowed to join or, at most, was allowed to watch. Hence why the mother was saying he was jealous of his brother. I have thoughts that Julian was excluded due to his 'size'(as his mother has remarked on) or possible violence(as shown in him fighting God or killing his father). Or the scene is about Julian being able to penetrate his mother, to be the aggressor/the one in control, to move past his childhood of being dominated/controlled by her which is strengthened by him asking to be forgiven and the cut out scene with Mai.

I think that another major thing in the film, is the color of the light that brightens the faces of the characters. Yellow is for vengeance. When it's blue, the character seems truthful and appears to have overall good intentions; when the light is red, the characters appear angry, bad and in search of vengeance (when the light becomes even more feeble and yellow). For example: when Julian is in the club "dreaming" about interacting with Mai, he's brightended by a bluish light (so does Mai) and they're divided by the red curtains (so he thinks about himself as a good guy freeing a good girl) but when he snaps back to reality, he has a red light on his face (and a black shirt) and it seems like he's taking conciousness of his wrongful actions. Also in this scene, his mother has both colors on her face making it look like Julian sees her both as good and evil.

This whole story could have been told way better. The jumps between real scenes and fantasies are too fast. After a while you don't know what is going on. On one side this movie is kind of real but on the other side it's like a fantasy. The ratio between real and fantasy was not good at all. The characters were too pale and no real background story. Many scenes were there just to be there without any meaning. I didn't like the movie. A good example of fantasy and "wtf happended" is "Enemy" which had a perfect mix of reality and fantasy, good characters and a good story. This one though... no. Too much. And many scenes and actions were forced and unexplained. No. Good attempt to make a unique movie but still way off to be a masterpiece.

The karaoke scenes are necessary! And the last one is just wonderful. Refn and his crew have simply genius in finding the very right song. They did it in Bronson with The Electrician and they did it here with Tur Kue Kwam Fun. The most ingenious thing is the soundtrack cut to the sweet song intro at the precise moment of the cutting of Julian's hands: you almost feel the act of redemption and forgiveness (be it real or just Julian's dream - as the You're My Dream song may suggest). Still a lot of people would leave the theatre at the very beginning of the closing credits (and it does ring a bell).

From there 14:36 he killed his own father with his own hands. (His f*cked up mom will say herself to Cheng). His hands are dirty with blood from a murder + parenticid at that.

I just think the Character Chang is ambiguous only for the sake of being ambiguous. Maybe the character got lost in translation from script to screen or maybe it was just a poor form of symbolism/surrealism. Visually this movie is stunning. I love how it uses this bright colors and yet maintains this dark/surrealistic tone throughout. The Characters seem emotionally detached but it serves in giving the movie a distinct feel. It is the kind of movie that only appeals to a certain genre of people.

Excellent analysis. I agree with your taste in film so far, and enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the great work. Like you, I considered Drive to be the greatest movie of 2011. Refn is a master at mounting tension throughout his films, and although there were things about this film that fell flat with me, the use of Julian's visions were wonderfully shot and perfectly portrayed the emotive state of the character. Its unfortunate that a film with so many things going for it was completely rejected from a large portion of the viewing public.

Good job Chris. I appreciate this...watched it once and called it a work of art.

this was a really good explanation of the movie and i have a new look on the story and have a new appreciation for the themes in the movie. however, i still feel that it was directed so much to be art that it went overboard and it really takes me out of the experience. but thank you for this.
