Yeah I hated his character. His character was a total pussy. He ran a Muay Thai club, and still somehow didn't know shit about Muay Thai... In fact, I don't think anyone involved in this movie including Refn knew anything about Muay Thai, because the one fight scene was terrible choreographed movie-jitsu. An actual Muay Thai fight would've been easier to choreograph... But nah, I guess it's not stylish enough for Refn.

A lot of Refn's characters are so evil that it's completely absurd, absolutely no room for subtext. It made me re-evaluate the whole movie and read it more as some kind of bizarre, biblically inspired fable. The veil of normalcy is shattered in this hilarious dinner scene.

I love these kinds of movies. At first, people don't get it, but in time it catches on. It's too bad that I haven't seen it yet.
Wow, Scott-Thomas is amazing!
Underrated masterpiece. In my opinion it's on the same level of visionary filmmaking as Drive.

@@MrCholoPants3415 I think maybe you're missing the bigger picture in some regards as I think this really goes lengths to show how sexual abuse especially from a trusted family member can go lengths to psychologically damage somebody and this scene I think really tries to show that through not just spoon fed dialogue or narration but through character actions and presence 'Show don't tell' as they say in the movie industry. I think you might have come to this movie expected little more than fight scenes and I would maybe suggest sticking to Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

I love everything about this film.
That shot at the very beginning of the mother is incredible. Reminds me of beautiful foreign films I used to watch as a kid.
An extraordinary performance by Kristin Scott Thomas.
It’s been almost ten years, and as much as I worship at the alter of “Drive”, I have also not been able to stop thinking about this film since I first watched it.

And that’s one of the best acted scenes you’ll ever see
This scene like the whole movie is just enormous.
KST channeling Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity) & Angelica Huston (the Grifters) and doing it with panache. Great actress and brave, taking on such a detestable character.

Most accurate portrayal of a moms true instincts in any movie ever. Most just aren't this honest.

... TAKE IT OFF!!!!
Julian just sits there in silence while his mother figuratively castrates him. Mai at least kind of stands up for herself and it seems like Julian's mom respects that so she lays off Mai. Then you see Mai barley even look at Julian, but when she does she rolls her eyes in disgust. Damn, those women are pure boss while Julian is just a dick-less puppet.

I really love this moment. I remember on my first watch bursting out in unexpected laughter at "What with Billy being the older brother, and having a bigger cock..." Up until that moment I was taking the movie 100% seriously and at the time I thought that it was bad writing rather than an intentional choice. A lot of Refn's characters are so evil that it's completely absurd, absolutely no room for subtext. It made me re-evaluate the whole movie and read it more as some kind of bizarre, biblically inspired fable. The veil of normalcy is shattered in this hilarious dinner scene.
This movie has deeper meaning but at first glance it’s like wtf is this shit lol
