Only Dutch people know this! #2

Only the Dutch know the following:
- Er staat een paard in de Gang (There is a horse in the corridor)
- 'K heb twee grote bloemkoole (I have 2 big cauliflowers)
- Weet je wat ik zou willen zijn? Een bloemetjesgordijn! (Do you know what I want to be, a flower curtain!)
- Het is weer tijd voor de Polonaise Hollandaise, van hier tot Oeteldonk, bij Hoevelaken linksaf! (It's time for the Polonaise Hollandaise, from here to Den Bosch, at Hoevelaken turn left)
We showed these sentences to foreigners who are learning Dutch, and let them guess what this is about...
Of course... these are phrases from the most famous Dutch carnival songs. But that's not quite obvious... and it's hilarious to watch how these foreigners try to guess the deeper meaning of these Dutch carnival song phrases...

    The four songs are Carnaval-songs. Carnaval is held the weekend before the 40 days of fasting before Easter and is a Roman Catholic tradition. The four songs are a bit old (seventies and eighties) but well known: "Bloemetjesgordijn", "Ik heb hele grote bloemkolen", "Er staat een paard in de gang" and "Polonaise Hollandaise". The singer of the second and the third one is André van Duin, a well-known Dutch comedian (his kind of comedy is a bit comparable to Danny Kaye or Weird Al Yankovic), who is now the presenter of Heel Holland Bakt (the Dutch version of the television show "The Great British Bake-off).

    These are carnaval song, probably also on youtube. Most of them don't have a meaning. De bloemkolen are big breasts. 'Een paard in de gang' and 'een bloemetjesgordijn' doesn't mean anything as far as I know.. Correct me if I'm wrong. Just a bunch of crazy silly song, making it absurd, because Dutch people like sing silly songs during carnaval..

  • @DrCatdeJong

    @DrCatdeJong

    Yeah don't even bother finding a meaning in the songs, the only thing that really matters is that it's easy to sing along when you're drunk. Or a super easy dance, one song is just jumping left, then right, left, right, and then just jump in place, after that you might still have some beer left, best thing to do when you hear the intro of the song is to just finish your beer.

    @@beatrizpalacios5517- these four phrases are extremely dutch (lowercase - the medieval words 'dutch', 'duits' in Dutch, 'diets' in Flemish and 'deutsch' in German all mean 'folk' or 'common' - as a distinction from Romance language based self appointed higher class rulers and clergy imperialists with their killing, raping and looting merciless mercenaries.) From a high brow perspective today, I would not even cite these four phrases when totally inebriated, nor participate in a polonaise. As a younger elder, I found out today that in one of these lines, 'cauliflowers' means 'melons'. A fifth phrase of inebriated dutch quality could have been, " 'k ben zo blij dat m'n neus van voren zit en niet opzij" (I'm so glad my nose is in front and not to the side). A sophisticated Dutch standup comedian once commented that, to resonate with the more high brow, the text should have been, " 'k ben zeer tevreden dat m'n hoofd van boven zit en niet beneden" (I'm very contented that my head is high and not down.) Communication = context.

    Some might say they struggled with the songs at the end. But let's be honest, by the end of Karnaval, that's actually quite an accurate representation :')

    Van het plafond tot op het raamkozijn, een bloemetjesgordijn een bloemetjesgordijn; En alle dagen hangen lekker in het zonnelicht; Met bloemen op mijn hele lijf en ook op mijn gezicht.......

    @@josdenhartog7385 weet je wat ik wel zou willen zijn, een bloemetjesgordijn Een mens moet heel zijn leven blijven lopen Daar wordt ie opgejaagd van hier naar daar En altijd maar het beste blijven hopen De honderdduizend of het abattoir Maar lekker rustig blijven hangen zoals een gordijn (Leuk te zien dat mensen dit kennen 👍)

    Who is gonna understand "There's a horse standing in the corridor"??? (Translation of "Er staat een paard in de gang" a hit song by Dutch comedian Andre van Duin). Oh, and I'm Dutch, but I don't either why somebody wants to be a "flower curtain" (bloemetjesgordijn). "Hele grote bloemkolen"? (Very big cauliflowers) "Oh wat zijn ze groot" (Oh how big they are). And now I wonder is "Polonaise Hollandaise" even a Dutch phrase? :P Let's say (and I won't translate this so the Dutch may try to riddle it out what Dutch saying I just used): THIS STRIKES LIKE A PAIR OF TONGS ON A PIG! (All of it). (If you put it all in lower case Google Translate will come up with the correct phrase.... Cool, eh?) (What I wrote in caps doesn't make sense to you? Well that's actually what it means) :P

    That is because there is no meaning hahaha. It is carnaval, those songs are made to not make sence, that is why it is funny to see them find some kind of meaning in it

    They are all phrases from Carnaval songs. They are not supposed to have a real meaning. Though they may start having meaning if you are drunk enough. They are just meant to silly, rhiming and easy to remember.
