Online Safety: Esther Ghey Calls for Ban Social Media Apps for Under 16s | Good Morning Britain

Ойын-сауық

The mother of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey has said she does not “carry any hate” for her daughter’s killers, as she called for social media apps to be banned on smartphones for under-16s. Esther Ghey is also campaigning for searches for inappropriate material to be flagged to parents. Brianna's killer Scarlett Jenkinson began to explore the dark web at the age of 13. By 15 she was a killer. Jenkinson is thought to have watched videos of torture and murder online on the dark web. It’s a question every parent wants the answer to - how do we keep our children safe in what Esther Ghey calls the “Wild West” of the internet?
Lorin LaFave, whose son Breck Bednar was murdered by an online groomer, says that there should be more education about the harms of the internet.

Yes, exactly. I had a phone with keys, no internet. We was perfectly fine, happy. Always outdoors, swimming, talking, laughing, being in the nature. That's what kids need back. All of them are on their phones nowadays. Comparing themselves, posting, being bullied, etc. Accessing these dark webs and content.

Children under 16 should not be given a smart phone at all. The only phone they should have is the equivalent of the Nokia 3310. That's it. I didn't get a phone until I was 16.

That’s fair and I respect that. I do rely on the phone for things such as googling routes if my transportation goes on diversion, ordering affordable cabs, having the school homework apps and online classrooms etc. too much relies on phones in this day and age to go cold turkey, in my opinion

This stuff will always exist. Parents need to put their foot down on their kids. They are caught on their xbox talking to potential threats, take away the xbox. They are caught doing the same on the phone, take their phone away. People might say thats wrong but its better than letting your kid get murdered. Also companies can add features that ensure parents must approve themselves the features and approve who friend requests etc.

The irony of posting on social media that we should get rid of social media. Social media comes in many different forms. The solution is for parents to actually be responsible parents and limit what their kids can access. It's not that difficult. Sitting your kids in front of the tv and letting them watch anything is irresponsible, getting them a tablet or phone with no limits is just insane.

All she could’ve done was ask who they were, and even then she probably only would’ve got a first name. It’s simply not realistic to get the parents to hold the brunt of all of this when it’s clear there was failure from the schools and other services involved with the murderers. Personally, I would still want to know who the kids are before my child were to ever go out with friends, but at 16, there’s less you can vet and monitor as opposed to an early teen

Honestly, I think what needs to happen is like a social media segregation. Where kids can only access a social media that moderates their conversations. Perhaps they hire people to look up flagged messages. And if it looks like bullying, that young person gets suspended and their parent or guardians are sent a message and told that they were suspended for online bullying and send the parent a transcript of what has transactions that constituted bullying. So then the parents can assign appropriate punishment. And then the normal regular social medias are for 16 or 18 and up. Where you have to give ID for it.

Kids nowdays are exposed to too many intoxications, busy parents emptiness and not filling their time in valuable activities that can build healthy personalities. Parents should fill the void that kids have and not to let them be predators to their pairs that might them selves have complications and are also vulnerable. Good and strong parenting is key. I wish all kids grow healthily and grow maturely.

You cant ban social apps however you could look towards a tighter lock on access to sites and material for people under age. Had the parents of the killer actually controlled what the kid could access this may never have happened. Once she got the interest she became a time bomb. The fact she put in a long term effort to befriend Brianna means it was impossible to see the danger.

Sorry, but I don't want to take advice from a parent who let her child do whatever he wanted online. It's the parents responsibility to set limits, not the state or the internet provider. Maybe if she limited her sons access to the internet and paid attention to what information he was consuming, maybe he would still be alive, and wouldn't have been trans. It's always somebody else's fault, I guess.
