    With how fast One Page Rules is releasing sculpts for their armies, I wonder what will happen when they finish creating all the miniatures for every army that they have rules for. Will they just start inventing new army lists to create miniatures for? If that happens, Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy might end up with litteraly hundreds of different army choices to choose from in the future.

But the "Space Marines" are pretty clearly just "He-Man" with clothes on, the "Tyranids" are pretty clearly the alien from the movie "Alien" and the "Necrons" are pretty clearly the soldiers from "Terminator". And those shows and movies are stolen from some novel, I suppose. I became a patron for Onepagerules last month and it was the best decision I made in a long time, at least in terms of wargaming as a hobby. I mean, dinosaurs with rocket launchers. Well, yeah, but OPR army lists have one to one equivalent unit types with their GW counterparts. This is a good thing, IMHO. I can take my existing GW army and simply look up the OPR stats for it and play. I have a LOT of rule systems (well over 200)… and without this 1:1 equivalency converting armies is always a bit of a pain.

    I don't think that's fair assessment. Yes, GW stole left and right -- er, "were inspired by" -- but it's one thing to drink from the same fountains as GW's designers, and another to take the laziest path of just copying GW directly. Battle Brothers are not powered armored space troopers, they are 40K space marines, plain and simple. And that's lazy and bad for the hobby.

  • @jimmysmith2249

    @jimmysmith2249

    Жыл бұрын

    @@theandf It is good for the hobby because it gives 40k players a way to use their old minis to get into a new system. OPR having new and different armies on offer gives those transient players a way to stay in the new system for a better price. Notice OPR don't sell any battle brothers models? They don't sell most of the armies based on 40k, and that is good; gw can't get at them easily, and it makes onboarding 40k players easy. Not lazy. They are stepping-stone armies to help onboard new players to the system.

  • @theandf

    @theandf

    @@jimmysmith2249 color me unconvinced. Grimdark Future has a Not Space Marine in its cover -- that's as lazy as it gets! I don't think being in the business of giving GW players another home for their minis is good for the hobby. It reinforces the idea that gaming in the 41st millennium is where it's at. Better handled by truly minis agnostic games which don't have ties to GW's thematic universe: you can use your Age of Sigmar minis in Frostgrave, and Frostgrave doesn't feature a Stormcast or a Khorne Berzerker in its cover art.

If you don’t mind playing with “legacy” models you can purchase bucket loads of firstborn Space Marines quite cheaply off eBay. Even the newest Mark IV’s work out at less than £2.38 per model. There is a solution to this which is digital kitbashing but it's a touch more complicated and less intuitive than standard kitbashing because you've got to teach yourself how to use Blender and Meshmixer (or Zbrush if you're really willing to spend some cash). Since you get the STL files, load the models you want up in your digital kitbashing studio of choice, cut parts and swap them around. Though, like I said, it is a bit of a slog, I'm learning blender just for mechanical parts (I do not hold out any hope of fully sculpting miniatures for a LONG time) because they're pretty easy to do.

    Paper miniatures (with front and back art, not just one-sided standees) are seriously underrated as a very accessible option. They can be quite visually appealing if done well. Plus they harken back to metal flats, which were the type figures used at the dawn of modern wargaming in the 1960s. Look up Donald Featherstone & Tony Bath. The former's "War Games" from 1962 is arguably where the modern miniature wargaming hobby began.

    I think it is great that OPR exists even as someone that actually enjoys 40k because the last thing I want is to see people that like 40k models but clearly do not enjoy the game. Personally I would rather recommend OPR rather than see people be frustrated with a game. That being said... I find myself watching this and asking if what OPR is offering is really better? I get the point of the channel is to be an advocate for consumers but what seems to be advocated is more consumption because it is cheaper. Does anyone seriously need that level of models? It seems to be consuming for the sake of it

    Back when I started wargaming, minis were CHEAP - a bag of Prussians from Minifigs was $10 US. Printing our own - we can, and have, bribed people to start in the hobby by GIVING THEM THE MINIS. This is often followed by people getting their own printers.

    Yes, I do agree there is value, but you need to know how to 3D print their models or you need to pay more more than 10 dollars to have someone print the models. I actually think the biggest weakness is the lack of lore, if they spent time developing their own lore for their world, if the lore was good enough then they could go head to head with GW and not need to copy them.

  • @MrSkullhead1

    @MrSkullhead1

    Жыл бұрын

    Exactly. 3d printers (especially resin ones) are a steep barrier to entry for many. Also, a number of supposedly "miniature agnostic" games are anything but since they stick close to GW's faction lists. It's no wonder the notoriously litigious folks in Nottingham leave them alone, because they provide free advertising and drive sales. This adherence to 40k factions is another way in which GW dominates the hobby and actively contributes to it becoming a monoculture. Several times I've read game rules thinking, "I dig these indie rules. They sound fun!" and then slog through yet another set of generically-renamed 40k faction lists. I love the indie spirit of OPR and would like to see them get more creative with the factions.

    If it was me, who works in the games industry doing business planning: 1. One page heroes, make books for the hero units for the factions of 40k & Star Wars legion for some small fee. Hire a writer to make your own lore for these copies to avoid legal difficulties. 2. Redo old armies with better details or alternate options (death corp of Krieg vs catachan type stuff) same rules, different aesthetics. 3. Turn your unique model line and rule system into a video game with matchmaking and a ladder, inject some competitiveness into the scene 4. Terrain kits, sell different settings and terrain types, create rule kits for fortifications and buildings 5. Campaign kits, use the rule system as an engine to tell some unique stories using your models and terrain that people can play through. tie these in with the previous 4 steps to create a healthy drive to buy everything you’ve ever made. 6. Make games out of these campaign kits.

    Watch you religiously and will continue to. Two quick things: 1) Unless I misheard and you announced this earlier than I remember, you waited until halfway through this video before sharing that this video is an infomercial. Yes, it lines up with your values and critique of GW (which I find insightful and grounding as I weave through the hobby), but nonetheless this is a lengthy advertisement as much as it is classic DC editorializing. 2) You keep saying they're "giving" or "giving away" so much. I know what you mean and likely much of your audience does. But I think it's worth clarifying that they're selling a subscription service to digital files that require additional costs to produce.

    I signed up gorgeous OPR last month and am super happy. Once I finish figuring out how to paint the models digitally, then import them into some VTT, I will be super duper happy. I've messed around with Talespire, which is pretty. But loading models is a bit clunky still. I assume they will add more support to that, currently it only aort of works to limited degree. But with some practice, I bet I can crank out not only custom painted models, but also semiautomate it. I've runa couple practice games with Talespire, and it's purdy, as well as under constant development. Has anyone else played it on VTT?

    I feel it's rather facetious to say you get models for 10 dollars when what you actually get is stls. Yes they are in a way models, but if I buy models from GW I don't have to print them myself or find someone else to do it for me. You get sculpts or files for 10 dollars, not models in the same sense that you do from GW.

    I love the 'firefight' version of the rules, because this way I can collect just a few handfuls of models rather than a huge army, and play even more affordable and quick games on the small surface that I have available. For context, I'm really poor and most of my money has to go to food and rent just to survive. But with the skirmish version of the One Page ruleset and scouring my local market pages for people selling really cheap & abused second-hand minis, actually getting games going with my friends has come within my practical and financial reach. Plus I'm having a lot of time repairing and repainting abused minis :)
