Honestly I like the idea of army books as just lore books with no rules. That way everyone can just get their updated army rules online and for someone like me who just likes reading the extra lore bits I still get to have fun books to read. Somehow I don't think that will happen but it's fun to think about.

Yeah and the worse part? They would and could actually sell more books and make more money. 1 more players would likely buy the various "codexes" for the lore knowing they wont be scrapped in a few years. 2 GW could then add new lore that would usually get stuffed into various codex updates and instead stick them in various campaign books that are also lore, art, paint guides etc. Release 4 a year and have everyone who wants the books and art and lore will be buying them. Finally 3, imagine how many new warhammer plus subscribers they would get if they had all rules, datasheets, detachments, stratagems etc in the 40k app for 10$/month (or whatever it is in current USD price, 10 is CAD). I was curious if subbing to the app would get you the updated codex datasheets in the app and it does not. Such a wasted opportunity. So in otherwords, if I want access to every datasheet as the codexes drop i HAVE to buy all the codexes and put in the codes. Talk about pay walling your customers. I mean, i might have spent 60$ on models instead of a book and actually started a new army if they didn't put the rules out of reach. So instead I'll buy the codex and then spend 60$ to 3d print an entire army of whatever I want. It's almost like they don't want my money.

The codex system made more sense twenty years ago when the internet still wasn't as prevalent. Now it just feels antiquated, like printed comic books. The only time I'll buy codexes or army books is when I see them dirt cheap at used book stores, and even then only for the lore. Also, I'm sure someone else mentioned this already, but Asmodai's new model is based on the first edition cover art of Angels of Darkness by Gav Thorpe, which was the DA's first novel. It was decent, not amazing, but it did introduce us to Astelan, who is kind of like the DA's Erebus.

For all the monetary success live service games are providing other games, as long as there's people who buy this shit, it's not going to bite them in the ass enough to make GW change how they do things. It hasn't worked for Overwatch, or Diablo IV, or even goddamn Destiny, as much as the industry stepped on their own dicks with Destiny in particular. Make the model have cards for the units and use the codex for the formations and special rules. . . The free cards had one formation for every army. . . That's the way to keep everyone happy. . . Casual play off the one formation and buy new models with the cards. Competitive play buy codexes and the unit specific to the special rules and formations they are trying to sell.

This is why you 3d print SpaceMace stuff. Every game store I go to has 3d printers you can rent and they have hundreds of files to choose from, and if you buy the model file you want printed you get yours printed first for free if you let them have the file. That is right, you do not buy the model or pay for the files they already have...you rent the 3d printer and pay for the material used. They run it for you and give you the model when it is done (pick it up next day usually). Honestly, I haven't seen an official GW model used in a 40k or fantasy game in YEARS. No one uses the current rules either, they use one page or they use old version rules that were properly balanced before they 'updated' them. The past 2-3 codex seasons have basically been GW changing the meta regularly in order to force people to buy whole new armies or at least force you to swap out units and earn some extra money from you.

They could f.ex. balance and test all game rules for all factions in advance using f.ex. cardboard mockups with new units (also do basic concept art for all units), and release all of the (in-house and volunteer) play tested and generally balanced rules for all the factions at the start of the edition. Between editions, this process can be ongoing in the background to keep all game design specialists fed. Then, they could just update the models of the individual units from almost all factions all the time until every/sufficient number of units have been covered; f.ex. this month we'll get new Necron Primaris Warriors, Space Marine Ungabungas, Sisters of Battle BBQ tank, and some new Eldar ass-pec warriors. Then some extra income from art book style lore/gallery/fluff books to whet the appetite. If there are absolutely critical issues with the rules, release a printable PDF errata (i.e. maybe once or twice per edition); if the balance issues etc. are not critical, just collect notes and do the changes in the next edition for all factions. People who play factions will be happy and get to use the same rules in the long haul, you can release variety of models all the time, you get money in from almost all the player base, the community stays consistently more active driving in more new players, and then the fluffy artsy books will bring in some extra income to fill in the void of codices. But yeah, that's just my random take on how it could maybe be improved.

Honestly the problem isn't the codex cycle, it's the edition cycle. being the last game faction to get a codex book during a game edition is only a problem if there's another game edition that comes afterwards, and even that's only if you decide to adopt the other game edition in the first place, which is entirely your own choice. I play 2004hammer and 6th edition Warhammer (and Battlefleet Gothic, but that one doesn't have codexes/army books), and all of the army books I have for both those games are going to be perfectly usable from here to judgement day. I can expect them to give me decades more fun gameplay experiences, and the exact order they might have been published in has no bearing on that anymore. A lot of GW's practices lose all power if you just let go of the FOMO, pick an edition and stick with it.

I'm pretty sure that the Asmodai sculpt is based upon an old piece of art (2nd or 3rd edition - inside the codex, not the cover). I think it might have been used for one of those Dark Angels novels that Gav Thorpe wrote.

  • @timothyharnedy4495
    @timothyharnedy44957 ай бұрын

The Codex system worked in the 90s, just about, when the armies weren't all that well-established, and so the Codex was an opportunity to add a lot more background and models to each army. You had the rules all in one place, and they weren't changed straight away by an errata, or a balance update. That was better than having the rules spread over half a dozen White Dwarf issues. But in a digital age, of rules being updated and changed, it just doesn't work the same way. As an aside, GW really hate this idea that people are "Eldar players", or "Space Wolf players", and only interested in new things for that army. They're desperate for people to get that second army, and then a third, and then a few random other models, etc, and not be tied to just one army. Personally, I crossed that rubicon a long time ago, and I find it hard to settle to one thing at a time to finish it off, but GW don't really want to do things that will help people to stay in their silo - unless that silo is the vast space marine one - because they want people to make the plunge to the next army.

I feel people historically have accepted the recurring codex purchase requirement for their army, which is an easier pill to swallow if you only play with one army. I think the codex requirement still being a thing today discourages branching off into owning multiple armies. Additionally, it discourages newer players jumping into the hobby.

  • @timothyharnedy4495

I think it's solely the price point that's a problem for the scenarios that you raise. I might have the details slightly wrong, but I bought a lot of the 6th edition fantasy army books, and 4th edition codexes, which is when I think they were £10 each, in ~2001. Inflation would have taken that price to £18 today, but instead they are asking £35 for each one. The price is too high for someone to buy it out of curiosity. I really think it's an example of where GW, by pushing the profit margin too far, they're acting against their own interests a bit. Though it seems weird to say that when their profit margin was >40% in their most recent quarter.

  • @mikehammer4018

@@timothyharnedy4495 I absolutely agree with your point. Back in the day, I collected codexes. Didn't matter the faction, I just bought them as they came out. Partly because I was young and without bills, but mostly because they were softcover and inexpensive for the perceived value. Fast forward 25+ years (holy heck, somehow I managed to get old!), and I don't have a single current codex. The most recent one I got was for Knights in ninth, because I had a hard time wrapping my brain around the rules interactions and found that paper rules really helped in that regard. Otherwise, my codexes are from 7th and 8th. I think what really killed me was when GW released a "codex update" for space marines midway through an edition cycle because they couldn't get a handle on codex creep. Those big-brains in Nottingham then started messing with model point values regularly in a near-futile attempt to "balance" the game - or even change the faction rules themselves... and sometimes within only a few weeks of the book being released! Nope. This has gotten out of control. There are a few things that are in a codex: rules, point costs, lore, and pictures. All of which are now easily and quickly searchable on the internet. Once GW got so bad I started looking elsewhere for something to replace their overpriced, under-playtested, and sometimes just inaccurate codexes... well, it just started to go downhill (from their perspective) from there. Once their business practices jailbroke me from their hobby prison, a whole world of possibilities I'd only peripherally known became open to me. The only GW things I've bought in the last year has been paint. And they did it to themselves...

Forgeworld was practically required if you wanted something different. I also don't understand how anyone is paying for GW these days. The prices of boxes have gotten insane and these megabox batch releases for multiple hundreds is way worse than a unit here or there for a slightly less painful pound of flesh price.

Clean them up and have them ready when they are done. Extra cost? Honestly not much more than your $200. This is in EVERY game store I have around me. I haven't seen an official GW model in a game in years, and most use one page or older rules. 8th, 9th, and 10th all had massive meta shifts to force people to buy new models every 4-6 months. 7th is when the armies were balanced and tournaments saw almost every faction appear in them and wins from every faction happened. Most places use 7th edition with some of the 8th and 9th flavor rules if they were fun and interesting additions.

The codex model continues to confound me... but I also think it's a weird thing to say "players will get bored of the game unless a new codex for their army comes out"... not because it's not true, but because it's sort-of an artificially and insidiously created problem. No other game that I'm aware of staggers its army revisions in this way, and just purely on a basic logical level it's immediately apparent why it's a problem: it all but guarantees a perpetual state of game imbalance and dissatisfaction with the status quo. This sounds like it should be a disaster for the game but it works as a psychological trick to create dependency. Players don't get bored of their army because they haven't had new rules in a year... but more specifically because they don't have new rules AND they see all the other factions selectively getting cool new stuff on a regular basis due to the release schedule and it makes them envious. Then when their interest is waning because monthly releases of everyone else's faction makes them feel neglected, the psychological effect of finally getting some attention with a new release makes it all the more irrestable... the miniature gaming equivalent to the cult/abusive relationship tactic of "Love Bombing" and then withdrawing affection.

The biggest problem with Mono-pose models, that was only touched on slightly, is how awkward they look if you get more than one. There's no incentive to buy more than one of something if they're just going to look identical. Sure, you could paint them differently, but most players will only have one army of any given faction, so they're limited/uninterested in this regard. But also, if multiple players in an area play the same army, their armies are going to look very samey to each other. Imagine three players all bring their Flesh eater Courts armies along. I don't mind tactical rocks. Especially if they can be easily removed. They offer an opportunity to make a model that does not stand on an even ground. Useful for scenic bases. However, as a sculptor myself, I am usually doing my tactical objects something more setting-relevant. (for instance, a tactical beakie)

We're consistently the worst-performing faction in 10th and recently received a nerf. Like... what? I genuinely feel insulted by GW and I dare say I hate this company, they don't deserve the loyalty they receive or your money.

As a Votann player, it sucks knowing we probably won't see anything for over a year. We have half an army right now, and with the release of 10th, they stripped away a bunch of flavor and synergy from the army. They just feel like worse space marines, instead of an elite, tough, shooty army like they should be. The army was consistently performing poorly, and GW's solution was "buy more models from us to put on the table" with the points decreases.

I'm right there with you. I feel like they lied when they said you wouldn't need to buy codices to play the game. Sure, if you parse the words, like this is some legal matter, you can play with just the basic detachment rules for your army, but you have to pay to get any other detachments (at least if you were to play in a GW sanctioned tournament). Plus, they paywalled the "free" access on their new app, tying it to Warhammer+ subscriptions. I too love the new sculpts, but I'm wary of their exorbitant price increases and the stupidity of their "roadmap" that basically creates a flavor of the month (well, quarter of the year) as they trickle out army rules.

Great video and some good suggestions on how factions could receive more timely and potentially fairer updates. Releasing detachments monthly and making sure every faction has their second detachment before rolling out the third is a great idea. Instead we have a few armies with 6 ways to play while some will be stuck with 1 until the end of the addition (Votann and Thousand Sons are not even on the road map yet). And just updating the rules in the app might encourage me to subscribe instead of having to buy a codex, because right now it’s A or B. Final point, is for those codexes that only come at the end of the edition…these should at the very least be proportionally cheaper in accordance with the lifespan of the edition, so if you only have 6 months of play then it’s only worth £6. Next video might cover the extortionate cost of Warhammer minis! I love them but I’m closing my wallet and saving up for just those I really, really want and otherwise looking at other game options. Currently I have an interest in Tomb Kings, the rumoured Kroot and Votann updates and Skaven if they get a refresh for 4th edition AoS. But I won’t be buying them all, which I might have done 2 years ago! In my opinion the excessive price increases means I will spend proportionately less and this is where the Warhammer playing community is now headed.

After hearing the flesheater courts referred to as the Intellectual Dark Web my mind auto corrected "Cryptguard" to "Cryptoguard" and I kinda don't know how to feel right now. I might have talked about this in the past, but I in concept like the codex system in that it's a whole book about your faction with art and stories and stuff. Except during my reading of every Skaven codex in fantasy (I haven't gone through all of AoS yet so I can't comment on any improvement) I noticed that it was getting more and more slim on those details. Previous editions included the entire Doom of Kavzar, later editions only included a summery. One early edition had a full original Thanquol story, later ones reserved that for premium books like End Times or black library stuff. And then I saw that my two main factions, Tyranids and Skaven, had (in 40k 8/9th and AoS 2/3) both had an occasion where their codices had the same artwork between expansions. I even bought the wrong Tyranid book at one point. They keep their artists secret so they don't have to pay them well, yet even with that exploitative system they reuse the same assets for COVERS on multiple occasions. It really makes it feel like they don't care. So basically my problem isn't codices, it's that they feel phoned in and don't offer any of the positives that they used to. It's not even just GW doing the same old thing. It's them doing the same old thing consistently worse! Now, again, I haven't read AoS, maybe those Skaven battletomes are amazing and correct course some. But I really noticed a steady decline in contend as WHFB's Skaven army books went on.

I recently made a post about how annoying it is that GW drags out these Codex releases because it's unfair to those people who have to wait the longest. The rules are outdated but at least there are even rules to use until all the new rules come out. I like that approach.

Well, there is similar situation in AoS now. Like with Crusade, 2 out of 3 Dawnbringers books contain Path to Glory stuff (AoS counterpart for Crusade) only suited for Cities of Sigmar faction, so these common campaign books (that looks like could be useful for everyone) basically just accompanied Cities of Sigmar release. I expect that 4th installment in Dawnbringers would start something similar but now only for Flesheaters...

With KT it's weird. The season theme got me thinking that we'll be getting a new release each quarter and it was kind of true for the first one (I note when I buy stuff, so for me it was Octarius in September 2021, then Chalnath in November 2021, Nachmund in March 2022, Morach in June 2022). In the second year of the game it got weird: Into the Dark in September (on track, I'd say), then Shadowvaults in October, Soulshackle in February and then Gallowfall and Ashes of Faith both in May. The last three fomo boxes were sold out in minutes, Shadowvaults was gone fast as well, I think. Into the Dark was AFAIR available for a bit, and maybe they started to produce less boxes because of that? But yeah, we got the news on the new box and then another team (we don't even know if it's going to be in the next big box or a solo release). A for 40k, I totally understand your point of view - in June, everyone was in the same boat - new rules for all the factions, for free, with a single detachment per army. And now some armies have a buttload of detachments (and as you've mentioned in a previous video, free rules for those armies vanished from the website) and some will be stuck with their single one for a year or more, which can be frustrating and make people leave the game

I completely agree. Codexes are obsolete and some even before they are released! To me, Codexes should be a cool collector's item with lore and other interesting things about your faction and maybe even painting ideas. Rules and points should not be contained within a printed book only to be changed moments after release. But instead, it should be free digitally and available to all. That way they can be easily adjusted and don't make the printed books useless

I tried to look up Kill Team and see what it was about on the site but I feel like things may not be updated on there, I dunno. Like you go to the shop and there are almost no mini sets, I guess you're supposed to check your local store instead? But codex’s are only part of their issue right now, they can’t stock shelves with product. I was waiting 4 months for junith to even be available on their store, my local shop had 24 hours to decide and pay for the Xmas boxes he wanted and he wouldn’t find out what he would actually get until the following week when they would reimburse him for what he didn’t get but had to pay for. And since he’s a smaller store he couldn’t put down that kind of money within 24 hours for a maybe.

I have a hard disagree on faction rules in White Dwarf ... it would only mean you are forced to buy a magazine which is otherwise unneeded. I do agree that they are severely underproducing most of their releases. Imho there are only two options: or make less new releases so that you can make enough of them or allow people to place an buy order once the produced stock ran out, at least during the week of the prerelease. Now it gets a bit dumb. If you do not log in on their site and buy it within 30 minutes after it becomes available, there is not much point of even checking.

hot take: tactical rocks are great, and more models should have them. jokes aside, Iike tactical rocks because it gives models that are dynamically posed and would otherwise have tiny connection points to the base more surface area to work with. I always cover up the molded terrain with textured paste to give the base a more unified look, but having little piles of dirt or a rock under the model's feet is pretty handy when it comes to glueing the model onto the base. wish eldar models had them, because those feet are TINY! on the other hand, stuff like jump troops balancing on pipes sticking out of the ground is just silly.
