ONE YEAR as a YOUTUBER - Workload, money, subs and more!

It's been a year! So let's be clear, how much work is this sort of thing, and how much do you get for it? What are the upsides and the downsides? Am I RAKING IN THE HOBBY MILLIONS? Er....no. But it's fun anyway! Here's a look back at how my first year went, along with - hopefully - some KZread tips and tricks and things to watch out for.

I just want to say, Ian, you have filled a valuable niche in the world of 40k videos: you understand the lore in the context of the history of the game, and bring an awareness of how the hobby has changed over the years and keeps changing. Looking forward to another year of content!

I agree, Ian's content makes a valuable contribution to the debate about the hobby. I love seeing how various aspects of the games and their lore have changed over the years, it is for me at least as interesting as the lore of the games itself!

Totally agreed. I've been Warhammer fan for decades now but apart from the in-game lore I was always fascinated by the game design side of it. What real world considerations prompted this or that change or addition? What were the design goals and guidelines for this or that model line?

PSA: I recorded this at the end of Jan 2022, and it's being posted at the end of Feb 2022, so that's why some of the numbers are slightly off (how many subs?). Also, Jan turned out to be a very popular month on the channel, so that pushes my monthly average ££ slightly higher then July-Dec mentioned in the video. Not enough to affect any of the conclusions though!

Your Warhammer 40k timeline in 20 minutes is a go-to for me if anyone asks about the background for 40k. It's short, done well, fun the listen to, and lets new players get the basics of why things are the way they are in the game, without having to sacrifice 2+ hours of their time.

This is really quality look at what it actually takes to get going in terms of producing video content. As insightful and honest as ever. It's especially great to see someone talking about what the actual "pay" for working on a project like this is; I think all too often people see clean crisp HD video of a well turned-out person and a good backdrop, talking about a luxury hobby and assume that the creator making the video must be raking it in as a result of the videos. Totally by-the-by question: What brand is that t-shirt? I'm on the hunt for some new basics and it seems really good.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your viewpoint and your 'niche' that you've filled. It's actually been really refreshing hearing a measured, relaxed voice in the 40K hobby and gaming world but also one that is highly informed and clear with a hefty side serving of dry humour. I really appreciate your particular brand of British humour. A lot of 40K videos and channels on youtube can be tedious or the other extreme being highly superficial and purely opinions. Yours hits a perfect sweet spot that really resonates, but perhaps that's because I too have been involved in this hobby for over 30 years and share a similar viewpoint. Anyway, keep it up and keep producing the singularly perfect videos such as your 40K candles review. It was such a beautiful example of how something extremely niche can be explained thoughtfully and thoroughly and actually provide a meaningful insight not only into collecting but also marketing and product design employed by Games Workshop and what that means for the hobby and us hobbyists. Job's a good 'un mate. 👍

I watch a lot of The Yogscast, an England-based gaming group, of them I particularly like Tom and Ben, who stream Warhammer (and other games) each week. You have the best “WTF is Warhammer anyway?” Type video I’ve come across on KZread. I’ve linked it to about half a dozen people myself, and usually get some pretty decent feedback from them. So while the Algorithm likes it, there’s a lot of us longer term subscribers helping those numbers too! My own feedback: your videos are typically one of the first that I’ll watch when I see them come up on my feed. In any topic. Love your work. Please keep the mix you’ve got, though also don’t feel you can’t try new stuff either. In particular, because I know they didn’t get huge view numbers, I did really dig your Tale of 4 Gamers series. So more old Fantasy content, and more of your mates doing group projects - potentially in other systems - is definitely welcome.

Hey Ian, I have seen pretty much all of your videos, and I hope they keep coming! As someone who is still quite new to the hobby (at least compared to you), and I really love all the insights you bring as a so very experienced player, in terms of gameplay, lore, minis and "meta". Keep up the good work!

I don't think you've given your personaility enough credit - it comes across in your videos and you just seem like a very likable and down to earth person.

This was actually really helpful, thanks for sharing so much of your journey here. I've been considering setting up quite a niche channel but from what you're saying I'm at least going to have to learn to edit very efficiently to be able to make it viable (not even thinking about money).

Stumbled onto the channel from the book club videos after catching up on the Eisenhorn book series, really found a lot of your videos interesting and entertaining so I'm glad you do this and glad its proving at least enjoyable for you and funding your hobby a little.

The thing I like about your channel is that I makes me feel like I’m hanging out with a buddy who is helping start playing the game while they share their knowledge and love of the hobby. I really appreciate how much you know about the lore and the older bits of Games Workshop games, everything from the “lost” factions and the odd old game. Thanks for the time and energy.

Wow thanks for the frank and honest video Ian, it isn't as much as I expected for the amount of effort you have put in. But I'm glad you have made your content and for your passion for the hobby. I love your channel. Thanks for all your excellent effort. Keep it up for as long as you can. I'll keep watching.

Thank YOU! And I totally wish you could make a bit more "quid" from this channel. As I am not a Warhammer player or collector, I still enjoy the game, its lore, and I would love to really get into it. Watching your channel really helps with all of those wants and am looking forward to more of your content. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

I really love the style of your videos and you can definitly notice the professional editing, It's all super well done! I only stumbled upon this channles recently but I've also watched the older videos and I always wondered how you just started out with everything being edited this well. I'm exited to see more Necromunda stuff and Hobby historia and I also like the old games workshop board games stuff :D well and also anything else.
