Warhammer 40k 3rd Edition Starter Set Unboxing

Ойындар

Hey folks!
In this episode Bozz opens a time machine back to 1998 and waxes nostalgic about this important piece of wargaming history that got him hooked on the hobby as a fresh-faced young lad.
Should the box stay intact as an artifact of Bozz's youth, or should he do what these kits are actually for; building, painting and playing with friends?

@@AnyWargameAnyTime I joined in 5th edition, and 12 year old me had been saving up a whole $114 to buy the big box kit. We drove 43 minutes to our local store, my Dad refused to enter the store and said "this is your first big purchase, you gotta do it." 12 year old me didn't realize I needed glue to assemble, got it, and the total was $115.34 or something (I still have the receipt but the numbers have rubbed off). The guy said "don't worry, I keep other people's spare change just for this reason" and he pulled out $1.35 in spare change people had left behind, and I walked out with an empty wallet, and gleaming that I now had a massive amount of models. God I miss those days. Spent every second relishing getting home to assemble the models, assemble them, and immediately broke the flight stand for one of the Deffkopters and was devastated... Then realized I didn't care that much, and began realizing I needed to paint and started saving up for paints. xD

I wasn't as interested in them, my heart was on my sleeve for the Sentinel and Imperial Guardsmen. 😅 But it was really nice seeing something we did together years ago; I still have the terrain in my terrain box for games. @@AnyWargameAnyTimethe real problem is that GW doesn’t even let them try. 90% of the art produced nowadays is sterile slop and it’s not because the guys behind it are necessarily bad at art. Back in the day John Blanche was able to insist on black templars, a much more obscure chapter at the time, being the face of third edition simply because he wanted to draw more medieval-looking and knightly marines. That kind of thing just won’t happen in the corporatised structure of modern GW. They will draw exactly what GW tells them to and exactly to the standard they can achieve within the timeframe provided.

Thanks for posting this - I must have read that 3rd edition rulebook to death, pages hanging off and all. Before even having that, I would learn how to play (me vs me) based off the blurry images of that reference sheet advertised in White dwarf. I would use a handful of space marines vs lizardmen skinks that were given to me from a friend, monopoly dice and books/cups for terrain. 3rd was really something special for my childhood.

This is a great starter. The best part is the army lists at the back of the book. While nowhere near as comprehensive as what would appear in a codex, you could at least not only expand the armies in the box, but most of the other armies at the time. I know a lot of people prefer figures in the starter over terrain, but I think terrain of some kind helps providing and interesting experience.

Nice! This was my introduction to the hobby back in '98, I still have the box, those ruins, the whippy sticks and the first miniature I ever painted. Sadly I've lost the rulebook at some point, I think I may have traded it for the 6th edition fantasy rulebook which I still have, if that's the case I'm happy with the trade as I play exclusively Warhammer Fantasy but still would be great to flip through that 3rd ed 40k rulebook. Perhaps I'll get into old 40K one day, wouldn't mind doing a 3rd ed Orks army to recreate what I had as a kid. :) Well, I did just sell the rest of what I had of those Orks so probably not.

I love the look of the current line of Kabalite Warriors and want to get some but I have 20 3rd edition Kabals and they were very fun to build. Never been one to leave things on sprues to try and keep them mint or whatever so I even kitbashed a few of them. Made one a sort of commander by x-acto grafting a skull onto his face. Gave him one of the spare pistols the sprue comes with too so he could dual wield them. As much as the detail is pretty simplistic on these early plastic models, I do love the style and making everything connect together with a sort of round joint means you can really change up their pose a lot. I got the Leviathan boxset for 10th edition and I'm quite happy with it but I do miss being able to easily avoid doubles by adding extra bits and changing up the pose.

There is a Getting Started Section on the rulebook, which is basically the idea of a turn with 2 miniatures. Small correction you can't charge 12" only 6", you move 6" and charge 6" if you are Infantry. Jump Infantry moves 12" and charges 6". Units like hormagants allow you to move 6", move more D6 with fleet of claw and charge 12" with their leap. For the ones who thinks this is not enough, yeah it's not, that is why you may need Vehicles to get around the table. Also, most games last 6 turns in standard missions, but they can be very fast because there are only 3 phases. Also, if you don't have 3rd edition Rulebook, 4th is fine, it's basically some updates to the core rules(sizes for miniatures and terrain, shooting priority, desimbark from the vehicles access points, and better assault rules), so you can totally play with 4th edition Rulebook and 3rd Edition Codices. It's totally fine also to play with miniatures that have bigger bases, but the part to get out from vehicles might be a little bit funky, and also templates with the coherency of troops; because of the bigger bases, so keep that in mind.

@@AnyWargameAnyTime well, maybe just confused, there are some special rules that allow one to do that, i.e. Leaping Assault from Hormagants with additional fleet of claw(they can run in the shooting phase, which is something other miniatures cannot in 3rd and 4th without special rules, hence the usage of Transport Vehicles for getting the miniatures better positioned on the board).
