    Rotations are probably the most important skill in RL. I was gold for a year, nearly, learned to rotate and hit Diamond 1 a few months later. Mechanics are fun, and neat, and so are accurate shots. Those are really important to learn but all the tricks in the world mean NOTHING if you are never in position to use them. Conversely, proper rotations open you and your teammate up for great passes through constant and smart pressure. Breaking down the opponent, stealing their boost and forcing them to constantly cycle rotations creates panic and forces mistakes often leaving you a shot easier than anything in any training pack anyway. Additionally, good rotations create opportunities for easy saves by denying break aways and time to set up complex shots. I've seen Champs who can't airdribble to save their lives....but they are ALWAYS where they need to be. Obviously it's more complicated but I just wanted to encourage you that you're on the right track!

    Good stuff, however I do think you underestimate how long and how difficult it is to do the 'simple' shots and moves that you did in some of the games. I am a humble c3 at best, right now. I know how long it takes to be kinda consistent in rocket league. Do Not Underestimate that. Maybe you can talk about being calm and the mindset for that in games, the way you drive around, the composure you are showing, it's pretty hard to learn for new players. Nervous people whiff a lot more and perhaps there's a mindset you can talk about most don't know.

Rotate wide, this gives you a better angle to block a variety of shots and defend different situations. Rotate backpost!!! Backpost rotations should be your go to defensive rotation, it will make it much much easier to defend with your teammate and solo. These all helped me :)

    Can I ask you about something you said in the video? I asked this question on Reddit a few years ago and never really got a definitive answer, but you seem to be the kind of person who likes to take time to really think about a situation fully. During the goal replay for your shot at 13:37, you said that you took Ball Cam off as you approached the ball to give you a better angle to line up the shot. But I'm confused as to how exactly that works in practice. In essence, I don't really understand how taking ball cam off so soon before making contact with the ball helps at all. I have two relevant documents that I made (quite likely a bunch of wasted time, lol, but they were fun to make) back when I was originally asking this question (around the start of RLCS season 5), and I've linked them below. The first is a thesis with research and reasoning listed, and the second is an analysis of every single instance of this over half an hour of a VOD on Rizzo's stream. For example, average human reaction time is 16 frames out of 60. Using the period and comma keys on a keyboard to advance this video frame by frame, you can see that, between the moment you toggled off Ball Cam and the moment you made contact with the ball, exactly 16 frames had passed (again out of 60). Even if your reaction time was three frames faster than the average human's, you still only have a 3-frame window to not only assess the situation after your camera changes angles but also make a decision on how to best position your car in the air before hitting the ball given the new information that toggling Ball Cam off provided, not to mention actually pushing the control stick and changing your car's position to match your decision. And by then, isn't it too late to really do anything at all? I've actually seen some streams and YT videos of Squishy's where he will take ball cam off nearly a full second before hitting the ball, and that makes FAR more sense to me, because in that time, you can actually see a minute change needed and make that change before making contact with the ball. But when we're talking about 16 frames between viewing the ball from a new perspective and making contact, it is basically physically impossible for that to occur. I read on Reddit all those years ago when researching this question that it was a habit brought over from SARPBC veterans that didn't switch their Ball Cam controls to toggle and kept them on "hold Ball Cam" because holding the button was the only option available to them in SARPBC. And because Ball Cam was unnecessary during that part of their shot (considering they were forced to hold Ball Cam for most of a game), they'd take their thumb off the button for that time. And when they kept doing that out of habit in the early days of professional RL, other new pros saw them doing it and did it themselves. Torment basically confirmed this in a short YT video of his (linked below) and said that he personally just did it out of habit and doesn't even know why he started doing it. And in some of the shots that he takes while speaking in the video, he takes Ball Cam off significantly more than 16 frames prior to hitting the ball, making the "extra angle and precision" reason for taking off Ball Cam actually make sense. But the entire reason I started thinking about this back in Season 4 of RLCS was because I was constantly seeing pros do this with not nearly enough time to actually make an impact, and I was seeing it happen MANY more times with no possible positive effect than I was with enough time between the toggle and contact to be practical. Anyway, if you could give me some insight on this, I'd really appreciate it. I'd also encourage anyone else reading this to chime in as well if they have an opinion they'd like to share. Pretty sure he was just explaining why he turned it off, not that it was a great example of helping the shot. The shot was incredibly easy for him, he probably just did it out of habit or intentionally so he could mention it, even if it had no effect.

  • @Scion15

    @Scion15

    Just watched torment's video and read your thesis. While I agree it's probably done out of habit most times and creates a placebo affect, there are some flaws in your reasoning. You shouldn't use average reaction time, as most e sports pros will have times far lower than average. You also stated the reaction time test was easier than taking a shot in RL, but I'd argue the opposite. While it is certainly much simpler, it's not a straight comparison. In the test you are surprised by the light. Making slight adjustments in rocket league is no surprise. You're forgetting how much muscle memory and prediction comes into play. A pro will usually already know what to do and when, they're just waiting for the right time. If the reaction time test was instead a line going across your screen for you to to time your click when it reached the end, with practice you'd have a 0ms "reaction time".

    @@Scion15 Thank you very much for the reply. I apologize for the length of this comment, but please bear with me (or just feel free to drop it entirely and do something else with your time. I am fully aware that this whole issue is very minor and would never result in a change in the way the pros or anyone plays; I just like getting down to the minute details of situations like this, and what I've said an say below is what I truly do believe). For context while you're reading what follows, the CS:GO stuff is to make a comparison between a game that is heavily reliant on reactions within a split second and a game like RL that is heavily reliant on predictions and information gained before that split second occurs. I included it to show that we don't have reason to assume that RL pros' reaction times are so much higher than the average player's, and that, even IF they do have higher reaction times, the small amount of time we're dealing with is not enough to effect a positive change relative to where we were before turning off ball cam (in instances like the one I pointed out in this video). Here's a link to a Reddit thread outlining pro CS:GO players' reaction times: www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/5n5vh8/pro_reaction_times_measured/ This data collection is not completely scientific, as there is no real way to create a control in situations like what we come across in videogames like RL and CS. But CS:GO is a game where the first person to get a kill when a player or an opponent rounds a corner can mean a win or a loss. For AWPers, they have to decide whether an opponent coming around a corner is jiggle peeking or dedicating, and they also have to correctly identify that what they see appearing around the corner is an opponent and not a flash grenade or something else. They sometimes have information coming in from their teammates, but they also sometimes sit there staring at a corner for 30 straight seconds, not knowing exactly when a head to shoot will appear. And reacting to a new stimulus is obviously very important in CS:GO, even if the players aren't typically posting sub-200ms shots (JW in those stats, according to OP in a comment decently far down, was playing at some sort of demo event, whatever that means, unlike all the other players, who were playing in LAN events). So the numbers that you see in that video (and the first comment) in that Reddit post are not all equivalent in the individual situations that each shot found itself in. Commenters pointed out that, in some cases, the crosshairs were not in the correct headshot position and needed to be moved slightly before the shot was fired, meaning that a reaction happened before the time would suggest. However, very small movements like this happen extremely quickly and do not add a very significant amount of time to the overall reaction, even if it is a measurable amount and not completely insignificant. After a quick Google search of multiple sources, average human reaction time is about 16 frames out of 60fps, or slightly higher than 250 milliseconds, with three frames being equivalent to 50ms (3/60 frames = 50/1000ms). So even if your average RL pro were to have a reaction time of 200ms, between three four frames faster than the entire time they had ball cam on (16 frames, in most of my examples, as well as this one with Virge), that only leaves just above three frames remaining for any movement of their thumb on the joystick to make a meaningful impact on their car and the ball in-game. I'm describing all of this to outline that differences in reaction time in our particular Rocket League situation cannot possibly be that impactful when we're talking about differences of only 50ms. In the comments of another Reddit thread, a few people talked about how one CS:GO pro AWPer "n0thing" mentioned that his reaction time was only slightly above average; with information like this, I see no reason why we'd assume that the Rocket League pros' reaction times are normally far lower than the average, or low enough to make a difference here. Now compare CS:GO's reaction-type situations to a game like Rocket League, which is much less reliant on reacting to stimulation than it is on predictions and accurate assessment of a situation, as you said so yourself. If you're last man and you see that there's a way that your teammate's challenge could go wrong, you begin positioning yourself accordingly before it happens so that you can react accordingly if it happens. I hear this phrase all the time when talking about RL, "Assume your teammates will hit the ball, but plan for them to miss the ball," which is basically the embodiment of this video we're commenting on. When RL pros make a play on the ball, they're not regularly reacting to changing stimulation within 200ms; nearly everything about the contact they make is based on their speed when they left the ground, their angle of approach, the way they rotated and positioned the car in the air before getting close to the ball, and their overall intended vision for the touch that they created far before making contact; it's the same way for GC1 players like myself, although I have more mid-air adjustments that I need to make than the pros do because my execution of those pieces is not as finely-tuned and consistent as the pros. And when we make a play on the ball, we are constantly reacting to our car's current position relative to where we want it to be when we eventually reach the ball. There is basically no single snapshot moment within 16 frames of touching the ball where we need to make an entirely new assessment of our position and change it accordingly, because we're doing that already on a constant basis from over a full second away. If anything, the act of toggling off ball cam causes you to not have an accurate or fluid view of the ball while the camera is moving, and when it stops, you need to make a new assessment of the situation in order to effect any sort of positive change. This is exactly why you said, "A pro will usually already know what to do and when, they're just waiting for the right time;" once they get to a moment before hitting the ball within normal human reaction time, they're already in the process of moving their car in the way they will continue to do so between getting to that point and hitting the ball. In that vein, you're right about the fact that it isn't a straight comparison between a standard click reaction test and a reaction test presented in this kind of Rocket League scenario. A big difference is that we as players have control over when exactly the stimulus will change because we get to decide when to turn off ball cam. However, IF we are actually turning ball cam off so that we can make adjustments, then muscle memory and prediction isn't really a factor, right (when combined with the very small amount of time many pros are leaving themselves to make such adjustments)? If the pros already know what they're going to do and when, then they don't need to turn off ball cam. And if they really want to ensure that they can make any last-moment adjustments, they would need to give themselves ample time to react to the change in camera angle, which is quick and not fluid. In the reaction test I took, you're surprised by the light, but you know it's going to happen within around six seconds, and you don't need to assess anything about the light, only that it changed color, which is noticing any sort of motion at maximum. When moving ball cam to give you another angle of view for precision adjustments, you need to assess multiple factors about the change and make the right decision, IF you are actually trying to make precision adjustments, that is. That's exactly why I believe that ball cam toggling in the way that we saw in the example in this video and all of those Rizzo examples in my second Google Doc is essentially a useless action. I mentioned this either in my initial comment or in the Google Doc, but I've seen Squishy toggle off ball cam around 45 frames to a full second before hitting the ball on multiple occasions, so I'm not arguing that every single instance of ball cam off is useless. But I am arguing that many pros and players (at least around Seasons 4 and 5), had been performing a useless action that still persists today. @@iliya1933 I'd imagine n0thing is an exception to the rule, but I don't have the data. If not, it still supports my suspicion that there's much more going on than simple reaction time. While yes, the cam switch is new info in a way, it's still not a surprise. They most likely already know in general what they're going to see, so it's more confirming what they predicted and following through, rather than going oh shit and making a new decision (like me or you might). On the one where torment couldn't even see the ball, that could support the cam switch not disprove it. His prediction of the ball is so good, he doesn't need to adjust to the ball, just check his alignment to the goal. Along with 1000's of hours of experience, caffeine, the so called flow state, etc. this could allow for much smaller windows for micro adjustments. There certainly is a line where the cam switch is useless, I just wouldn't be surprised if that window is smaller than you'd think from the 250ms theory. But I'm also making a lot of assumptions, just playing devil's advocate in a way. I agree there's going to be lots of times where it's just out of habit and pure placebo effect that they think they know it's helping.

    @@Scion15 I definitely see where you're coming from. And if ball cam is turned off early enough, I could see the use both in the Torment situation you described and really any other. It's just that the bulk of examples that we have fall within the window of human possibility, and that's where I'm confused why this ever became a thing. And like I said in my "thesis," I wouldn't recommend anyone stop that currently does this habitually, because at this point the comfort of doing it is probably worth more than any teeny tiny effort that could be impeding them. As a side note, I really don't think n0thing is the exception. Other commenters claimed to have heard similar things from other pros (they didn't provide any clips or other evidence, though), and I looked up n0thing's tournament results, and he's got multiple 1st and 2nd place finishes at S-tier events from 2009 to 2018. And given the reaction times we saw listed, I don't think we have any reason to conclude that pro RL players are just able to react faster to things like that, at least in a meaningful way, partially because RL isn't a reaction-based game, and partially because the CS:GO pros didn't record any particularly blazing fast times as their average like you'd think they would. Some were outliers, but many in the comments mentioned that JW's circumstances were different and that that game isn't all reaction time. And RL is less so. I just don't see any evidence that proves the "last-moment precision adjustment" thing.

    Cutting the flow of the game for the video is super annoying! Wasn't this series about rotations? Why then cut the rotation part out after the offensive play?

    to be honest i think u should finish ur placements then continue the series, bc golds arent really the ones who are going to benefit most from the more in depth analysis of rotation, i think that would be more useful for champ to gc as the games get faster. more because they need to be able to read plays before understanding what to do in certain situations so your explanations might not be helping them as much
