One *SCARY* Landing - Catching a boat wake in my Lake Buccaneer Seaplane

Join me on a scenic flight in N2793P a Lake Buccaneer seaplane around Lake Norman and Concord North Carolina. Along the way I make several water landings and meet up with a Grumman G-44 Widgeon. I pretend to be a speedboat as I step taxi around Lake Norman in this amphibian. Get a first hand look at sea plane landing and taking off with a view from the cockpit. I witness a student pilot make his first solo flight, and catch a boat wake that vaults me into the air before I'm at flying speed. That makes for a very scary landing. Follow along as I talk about a few tips and tricks for making safe water landings in this amphibian seaplane. Whether you're an aviation enthusiast, thinking about getting a seaplane rating, or maybe even buying an amphibious or straight float plane, I hope you enjoy this video. If nothing else, this video explains why I love general aviation amphibian flying boats! Safe Skies & Calm Seas!

Scary and good save. Does your plane have VGs? If not, highly recommend, also careful with letting the yoke forward when you hit the wakes. I’ve hit a few surprise wakes in mine as well.

@@dirtridr not a gimmick at all. Have put them on the last two planes I've had. Improvements were very noticeable: lowered stall speed, more effective ailerons and flaps. They can be used sometimes to fix undesirable flying characteristics that would otherwise need a redesign.

You were very lucky to recover. I had the same thing happen, then went to an instructor with Lake and they replicated what happens when you hit a boat wake, First, do not chase the elevator, you will be out of phase and agrivate the bounce. Afetr a couple of bounces the nose will sumerge. Proper procedure is to remove all power, lock the elevator in the crook of your elbows, hold it back full until airplane settles. Use rudder to keep level. Not pretty or sexy but it works. Never try and save it,.

If you see a boat moving anywhere near your LZ; you need to be prepared to avoid the wake that will remain long after the boat has moved away. Your plane creates a Very large wake also; so please be mindful of the effects it may have on boats, waterfront property and others on the lake you are using.

I have no 'real clue' what's the procedure is for such an issue but my SEL training said to get the hell off the lake. Trying to save a 'land' landing is one thing, but landing on water, in my eyes needs to be way more precise. Once the 'numbers' fall apart with landing on water, the sky is your friend. Good luck with flying, you have a 'ticket' to experience what the 99.9% of world can only imagine.

Hitting wakes like that can be real interesting. We lost one to rough water when trying to do a recovery. Improper use of throttle and controls leading to “pitch poling” the airplane. It is really important to get good training to transition from a tractor type airplane to develop Lake specific habit patterns, especially on the water.

I lost a dear friend in a Lake and witnessed many Lake accidents, but never flew one myself. After watching this video I’m glad I never did. I owned a Republic Seabee instead and see now how much superior the Seabee truly was. With the deep V hull of my Bee there was no issue dealing with choppy waves. The only challenge was to learn how to deal with strong winds due to the high tail of the Seabee. The advantage was however, it made it easy to tell where the wind was from. But thanks to this video Zi now understand what makes the Lake so dangerous to fly, apart the fact of raising the nose in an engine out, which happened in my friends case on take off, not giving the flying pilot a chance to quick enough retrial the aircraft. Instead after utmost a 100 ft of the ground entering a spin and nose down into the ground. In my humble opinion this aircraft is a dangerously poor design. I noticed in many accidents the nose digging into the water and being ripped of at the nose of the wing and bent backwards underneath the fuselage with no chance of survival. Thanks to his immediate reaction, this pilot avoided just that, otherwise it would have ended bad. Any aircraft aims to kill you, if you are not on top of things, however this one is particular good at challenging a pilots skills.

Need to start practicing rules of the road when you're on the water. As soon as you land, your plane becomes a vessel. Uscg navigation rules.

I disagree... if you were a pilot you'd know what a landing looks like. This is the risks of landing on water and he recovered without plunging the nose into the water and flipping over his plane.
