5 Reasons I bought a Lake Buccaneer Seaplane N2793P

The Lake Buccaneer is an amazing aircraft. Join me for a few splash and goes on Lake Norman, North Carolina while I discuss five reasons I decided to purchase such a unique airplane. Get a first hand look at sea plane landing and taking off with a view from the cockpit. Along the way, we will make a glassy water landing, then speedboat around the lake while we step taxi in a seaplane. Whether you're an aviation enthusiast, thinking about getting a seaplane rating, or maybe even buying an amphibious or straight float plane, I hope you enjoy this video. If nothing else, this video explains why I love general aviation amphibian flying boats! Safe Skies & Calm Seas!

My favourite Lake Buccaneer story happened in Wawa, Ontario, in 1985. The owner of a local fast-food restaurant bought a Lake Buccaneer to fly around Northern Ontario. I was flying a DHC-2 Beaver on floats for a living in those days and witnessed some of the drama, so I know it's true. On this afternoon he was returning to Wawa and discovered that he had a gear problem. He chose to land on the un-controlled concrete strip at Wawa (YXZ) gear-up. I don't know the extent of the damage, but I imagine it was considerable. Apparently, it hadn't occurred to him to land on Wawa Lake, a mile or so away, which fronted the town with a nice beach, or at least on the grass beside the runway. Another sad case of a 100 HP brain in a 200 HP airplane. The Buccaneer is a good airplane, some private pilots not so much.

Used to love my 63 LA-4 180 29L and had almost as much fun on step in the Everglade Florida canals in the mid 70's winding across the state, cross controlling ailerons for tighter turns or simply adding a bit of backpressure and throttle to skip over the blind ones. Years later I googled my baby and found it had sunk in Lake Murray and was salvaged (KZread). Saddest thing I ever saw was my LA-4 hanging from a crane by its tail. Oh the adventures & stories we made together around Cape Cod are etched forever in my mind. You had me feeling every motion of flying her again as I rode with you in the air and on the water. If you ever go to Florida, try landing in a huge school of sharks basking in 10' of water near Miami and then stand on the wing and declare reason #6 for your amphibious choice lol. Oh yeah, a piece of trivia, I chose the colors for my purchase agreement paint job and the guy in Tuscaloosa whose original paint scheme he came up for my international orange, white and gold trim impressed Lake enough to produce the Buccaneers that year exactly the same. So naturally, everyone thought I had a new Buccaneer except for those savvy enough to spot the delta wing root. I hope this note finds you well and still enjoying those hops or conventions.

Thanks for sharing, great video. I worked at Aerofab in Sanford, ME building the Lake Buccaneers, 1973 - 1974. I ran the press brake, and hand shaping components. I used to see them come to the lake I summered at (Square Pond) when they were only painted in the yellow primer, then a few years later I was building them along with floats in the same factory. Never got the chance to ride in one but I always loved them.

Went to flight school, out of military, in Colorado. An elective was a sea rating. My instructor was too fun! What a great time. Forward, as an instructor trained a few folks in the LA-4. What fun. The most helping a couple instructor friends get their rating in ‘74. Three instructors in a LA-4 in a big lake in New Hampshire. It is an airplane that might not be forgiving if you goof off. Amazing to think over 45 years ago. You’ll have soo much fun. Nothing like a great glassy landing. Be safe🥴😀👍

I love the Lake aircraft. As a kid, I used to get to go fly in both a Buccaneer and a Renegade quite a lot. There is nothing better. I flew a lot in float Cessnas too, and while also fun, the Lakes where in a league of their own. The feeling of "power boating" on the step, with your behind almost literally on the waves was a blast. And especially the Renegade was a spacious, capable and powerful machine.

I live in central NH near Gilford Airport where Lake Aircraft used to be sold. I remember seeing these planes fly by all the time. You could always tell when it was a Lake flying over because, from the ground, the aircraft had a unique sound to it. The engine produced a very particular bark that was easy to identify, and generally loud enough to get one's attention compared to other light planes. You just don't see them that often these days, not even on Lake Winnipesaukee. I always thought they were very cool looking aircraft, and I do miss seeing them.

Beautiful plane. Myself I'd love to own the Buccaneer ultralight seaplane as I could fly it off the small lake next to the gated apartment complex I live at. Both ends are now treeless and one end is the end 99 percent of days the wind is out off. It's 3 times as long as I'd need for flight ops and the beautiful small park next to it has a perfect area to beach it and 4 point tie it down. I was a Flight Mechanic on Coast Guard Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplanes then helped restore a Grumman Goose at Dean Franklin Aviation in Miami in the 80's. I'd love to get a chance to fly in one of these. Especially if the owner was flying up to the annual EAA AirVenture airshow I attended every summer when I was a kid then teen in the 60's and 70's. First up in Rockford Illinois then at Oshkosh Wisconsin. The last time I went in '78 on my honeymoon with my red head ex-wife. We had a blast. My Mom had taken over as the American rep for Marcel Jurka selling plans for his scaled down WW II fighters. The P51, FW 190 and Spitfire. He was the first person to design plans for scaled down WW II fighters. Originally wood 1/2 and 2/3d scale then later wood or metal full scale. He was working on plans for P47's when he passed away. He was a Romanian Royal Airforce pilot who was conscripted into the Luftwaffa by the Germans or if he had refused his parents would have ended up in a consatration camp. In late 1944 he defected to France in the state of the art radar equipped nightfighter Hienkle he was the pilot in. His crew were all Romanian like him and also wanted to defect to the Americans. He received a 25 thousand dollar reward for defecting with that airplane the allies wanted to get their hands in. After the war he became an aeronautical engineer for French aviation company Airspatial (spelling suspect). In the 60's he designed an homebuilt airplane named the Tempete then the Sirroco which my dad began building in the mid 60's then the P51 Mustang and the others. He asked my dad to become the American representative to sell his plans in America. When my dad was medically retired from the Flint Michigan fire department he moved to Paris France and my mom took it over. In '78 she had injured her left wrist atthe Buick factory where she worked full time so she thought she wouldn't make Oshkosh that year. I took 3 weeks leave from the Coast Guard while I was stationed at Airstation Traverse City Michigan and I drove her there in her Dodge custom camper van with my new bride. We had a blast including camping in Michigan's upper peninsula for several days in our way there. She got offered a flight homein a friend's Piper Cherokee so my bride and me did some more camping on our way back home.

Just my opinion, but, you tend to chase the bounce and are setting yourself up for some porpoising. Keep the stick back, don't chase the bounce. If it is a bigger bounce, add a bit of power and settle it back on to the water.

I'd be happy to connect with you, but I sold 93P earlier this summer. I'd suggest connecting with Harry Shannon at Amphibians Plus down in Bartow, FL. They can help get you a ride in a Buccaneer or Renegade.

@@CoryJohnsonpilot I am familiar with Amphibians Plus and would most likely go there for my insurance training if I chose to buy a Lake. I was just hoping to find out if I really liked them enough by flying with someone who has one. No worries though. So why did you sell and how the hell did I miss the fact that there was one for sell in the area?? I'm constantly looking on the usual planes for sale websites.

What is that a throttle on the ceiling , that you have your hand up in the air like that or is that a trim seems like it's fuel I wouldn't like that

Since the engine is on the top of the plane, the throttle, prop and mixture controls are on the ceiling. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's actually pretty cool. Thanks for watching!

There's no minimum number of hours required, but the Lake Amphibian Club does have a training curriculum that I suggest you follow. Work with a Lake specific instructor and enjoy the transition training. It's absolutely worth the time and effort. Safe Skies & Calm Seas.
