One Piece Review: Netflix Series Is a Hugely Charming Adventure Brimming with Heart

Ойын-сауық

Netflix's One Piece is based on the beloved manga series by Eiichiro Oda. It stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, a young adventurer who dreams of becoming King of the Pirates.
The series also stars Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.
Catch my thoughts on the live-action series in this One Piece review!

Perri, I just want to prepare you. What they adapted in the live-action is essentially just a prologue. If it gets a second season, it's going to get even wilder and crazier!

You called out something very accurate - part of what makes this a great adaptation that the same elements (like Luffy’s enthusiasm) are identical driving forces in both live action and source material. This feels like the recipe for a great adaptation, and casting inaki was a really great move.

If they managed to succeed with Drum island and Alabasta Arc. This show will go more further and probably will be one of the best netflix show. Because the future Arcs are on whole another level. Every Arcs comes with a back story of both Protagonist/Antagonist side with unpredictably beautiful ending. One piece is not the kinda anime suitable for live action but seems like these guys knows how to get honey out of comb. fingers crossed 🤞

Great review, as a lifelong one piece fan this makes me very happy. My fav was always luffy and zoro, however one piece is such a good story that you'll likely fall in love with every single crewmate, the villains also get more intense. I'm really happy that non fans are enjoying the show. When I went through difficult times one piece was always one of those things that made me happy, I hope it does so for other people as well.

As a One Piece manga reader, Luffy also is my favorite character and his personality is something I dont get tired of. I love it so much. I know many will disagree but I would recommend you to read the manga and not watching the anime. For pacing a time consuming reasons. But I got a say, If you liked the live action, one piece manga has the same vibe and the story expands in a expectacular way. Sorry for my bad English. Loved the review. Welcome aboard!

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN LIFE RIGHT NOW i have been reading and watching one piece for over 10 years now and ive been watching perri since collider days and seeing her give the live action a 4.5/5 is just so wild one piece is a beautiful masterclass in writing and Oda truly is the goat of writing and seeing this live action bringing more attention to this series from the western audience is so crazy. this series was already the biggest manga in the world without really blowing up yet in the west like other series have like dragon ball or naruto. so seeing a reviewer ive been watching for years give a positive review on this series is just wild to me

The thing is the early chapters they adapted are the weaker parts of OP because it s all about luffy gathering the skeleton members of his crew. Should this reach season 2 or more, it will gain more steam because the story starts to delve into serious topics.

So they were able to use wide shots because most of the actors actually can fight and perform in those roles without stunt doubles. It allows the cinematographers more freedom in how they design shots because they don’t have to rely on crappy overused cuts or obscuring the characters faces with rear shots. The fight sequences prove once again the casting was on point.

haven't seen you in a vid (my fault) since GoT season7 reviews on collider.... anyways, as a long term OP fan (since early 2010) I really enjoyed this adaptation quite a lot. I do find some changes let's say curious, but mostly from a nitpicky standpoint. The core was hit so right on the mark. and seeing people not that into anime/manga get the charm, getting charmed by it, with all its quirkiness, even by manga/anime standards is so cool - as you said - getting people to check out the source material, like how the LotR movies made me read the books way back when. I would recommend reading the manga though, it's very much easier to digest, and if you just wanna check it out at first, also rather cheap through VIZ. There is a lot of good to be said about the anime adaptation (voice acting [can only speak for JP dub] and music in particular), but especially after 200ish episodes (an absurd number, but out of 1070+ currently not really) the pacing starts to get increasingly worse

As a long-time One Piece fan who's been reading the manga since the early 2000's, I was initially skeptical about the choice to adapt it into live action. Obviously anime-to-live-action adaptations don't really have a good track record, but especially in the case of One Piece, I wasn't confident that a production could faithfully translate One Piece's unique style and tone. One Piece is a story that skillfully navigates between outrageous and ridiculous comedy, to deep personal drama, and after watching the live action series, I feel like the entire team was able to capture that same navigation wonderfully. I'm looking forward to this series continuing, but I also hope it inspires people to check out the source material as well.

All I have to say as a fan of yours, the anime series, and the manga is: PREACH! i literally just finished catching up on the anime, over a thousand episode in about a year and it flew by. In the midst of catching up with the manga but all that to say is I finished the netflix adaption in practically one sitting a loved it. Agree with all your points 100% and would like to add that I loved the score, pacing, and another huge shoutout to the casting; it’s wonderfully and seemingly effortlessly diverse making it feel like it’s showcasing how broad the in-universe world is and all the appeal of One Piece as a property in itself. I honestly couldn’t imagine nor remember a better live-action adaptation of similar work. Really hoping it clicks for other fans old and newcomers alike and we get several more seasons. Obviously not for everyone but I hope it finds it’s audience.

If you do end up seeking out the source material I would strongly recommend the manga over the anime. One Piece's anime production runs faster than the manga (1 episode per week vs. 3 chapters per month) despite the fact that the industry standard for anime dictates an adaptation of 2-4 chapters per 24 minute episode. This can result in the anime being sluggish and hard to watch as opposed to the quick, to the point storytelling of the original medium. Reading it feels like the next amazing, exciting thing is coming just around the corner whereas watching it often leaves me begging to move on to the next scene, which both sound like the same thing but feel very different in the moment. One Piece is my favorite thing ever so I am overjoyed by the apparent success of this adaptation and very touched by your enthusiasm for it, but if you want to continue down this rabbit hole please be aware of the better tunnel.

There's a Netflix show called The Hollow and it reminds me so much of this show, it's animated but it just gives the vibes, I hope it's great

I really like the 'veterans' like Garp and Zeff, and the show give them the spotlight they deserved. Garp, in particular, had me worried that they'd make him a no-nonsense kind of guy. Glad I was wrong.

Knowing the source material fairly well, I can safely say the best thing about this adaptation is that it is One Piece. Unfortunately, this should've been 9 episodes minimum, perhaps 10. They cut out a little too much, and I'm just talking what they must have filmed. There are scenes that are missing context.

the series perfectly captured the heart of the manga/anime my one concerned is due to it being on netflix we might probably not get passed season 3...when honesly the first half of the series is like 6 to 7ish seasons. and id HIGHTLY recommend reading the manga because its just like the netflix series the worldbuilding is amazing, and it has that sort of "every small information matters so u should remember it for later",

I love hearing the opinion of a new comer and no fan! Because I'm super biased, and considering how bad past live action adaptations where, my bar was set so low that just the fact they respected the characters and plot was enough for me, for it to actually be good? As a 12 years OP fan its something I never imagined. Welcome to the adventure!

I love OP so much, and I feel like I should watch the tv show, but I'm kind of tired of OP because I hated the previous manga Arc/ current anime arc so much... However, the cast seems great.

If Gen X is all snarky, ironic, authentic cool and Millennials are all self centered unself aware wannabes then Gen Z are optimistic, ambitious dreamers who are going to love Luffy because he's one of them.

Why are you stereotyping generations? One Piece can be enjoyed by anyone. In fact, One Piece and Luffy were popular before Gen Z could even watch/read anime/manga

I have been binging reviews of this show by people who have never seen the anime or manga, and I love hearing so many people say the show makes them consider watching the anime or manga! Especially father being a fan for over a decade, and having struggled to introduce the anime to others, how just don’t want to invest in a show with over a 1000 episodes

Huge fan of the Manga and anime, so this adaptation scared me so much. But, two episodes in and I am shocked by how incredible it is so far! Inaki Gidoy absolutely nails Luffy to a tee. So overjoyed that Netflix didn't bungle this one 😊 Wonderful review Perri... so happy you loved the show!
