    i know a trilogy with great dialogue, not horror but instead drama/romance. It's the before trilogy directed by Richard Linklater and stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. It's very dialogue driven similar to this film.

    When I saw this in 1990 as a 15-year old on VHS rental, I absolutely adored it - more than the original; but it didn't do very well commercially and was largely forgotten about until around 2010. Today, It makes me so happy that people are discovering it, loving it and making it a cult classic. Brad Douriff deserved an award for his epic performance and longggggggg memorized dialogues. George C Scott does shout a lot though ;) The creepy score is so good. The Theatrical Version is the only version to watch. The director's cut IMHO takes you out of the movie because of the quality of the rescued footage; and it doesn't flow as good. I can't recommend it enough.

    This has ALWAYS been one of my favorite " horror " movies. Thank you for reviewing it. I honestly don't understand why more people haven't seen it or just never reviewed it. I also have always thought about how George C. Scott did this movie and his son Campbell Scott did the Exorcism of Emily Rose, which is another ( I guess they are considered possession horror movies). I've always liked the line that Kinderman says to Thomas in the Limbo Station I'm sorry you died. I also liked when the grandma reaches over and saves Kinderman's daughter just before the old lady cuts off her head. Those two scenes are priceless.

    The less said about The Exorcist II the better. Gotta admit, though. I didn't get this THIRD film first time I seen it. It's now one of my favorite movies of all time. It's honestly amazing. In almost every way. Like the original, we don't really see any bloodshed. And yet the psychological effect is even more traumatic because of it. It terrorizes our imagination whilst tickling our fancy for smart dialogue and whatnot.

    @@cuddywifter8386 What I'd read was that it was intended as a comedy, and the way it's paced and the acting leads me to believe that was the case. In any event, whether it's a comedy or a psychological thriller or both, I think it fails. I found it a slog to get through. Maybe it worked better as a book. But, I don't necessarily want to discourage anyone from seeing it if they think they might like it, especially if they're an Exorcist completist or a fan of Blatty, but I wanted to offer my warning.

    This really is a cut well above most horror movies, and that's in part because, like its inimitable predecessor, it's much more than a "horror" film. And yeah, the studio forced Blatty to inject an exorcism into the latter part of the movie so the name would make more sense. There is another, little known _Exorcist_ sequel: _The Ninth Configuration_. It follows Cutshaw, the astronaut whom Reagan told in the first film, "You're gonna die up there." It's not a horror film, but an intense, deep, and often funny psychological drama. Great reviews! I've subscribed.

    @@RocklinGraves It could be because I saw it in the theater. I also was a huge fan of Ed Flanders who played Father Dyer. He was in Salems lot which is my favorite film. I loved the natural connection between Kinderman and Dyer. Their friendship was so believable just in the few scenes showcased in the film. Also, the way Blatty directed the scares was so effective. It could be a whisper or a scream that transitions to the next scene. All of the violence is done with the less is more approach. It is very effective and stuck with me. I think the original is a masterpiece but I don’t revisit it like I do Part III.

I have heard for years how good this movie is, but I can never make it more than 30-40 mins. I went to film school in NYC, in the early 90s, so I’m always watching for different reasons than say my family and friends. I just feel like this movie looks so cheap. EXORCIST 3 is an amazing movie, the jump scare is by far one of the best jump scares in movie history,I think Farther Morning was added due to studio interference demanding that there should be an exorcism added because of the movie's title. The actor who played Damien was an alcoholic and had a condition called 'wet brain' & could'nt handle the script and had to have Brad Durriph, 'apologies for any poor grammar' flown back in to replay the scenes & to be fair he nails it every time.. cracking Movie, cracking review.

    The thing about Kinderman's sarcasm is it's not a weapon he uses to cut people, it's a shield to protect himself from an ugly world, of which he sees far too much of the ugliness. George C. Scott communicated that world-weary wounded psyche of Kinderman so wonderfully.

    I do believe the studio insisted on an exorcism scene in the movie - otherwise, despite having a couple of returning characters, felt like a stand alone story. I read the novel Legion before a movie was made and it was very enjoyable - including a scene where a priest is decapitated in a confessional box. Stills of the scene exist. I never considered this to be a sequel to The Exorcist but funnily enough, having the big confrontation at the end involving Dourif and Miller in the theatrical cut makes it a sequel, and a good one at that. A continuation of the story instead of a rehash or going off in a weird tangent. It's a thoughtful and well-written sequel to a horror classic ( meaning the original, not The Heretic lol). Great channel, I've recently discovered and mentioned in another video comment section. Def worthwhile checking out.

    Last year Blumhouse released Exorcist Believer. I was surprised that the franchise was finally getting another sequel. Now Exorcist II: The Heretic was not a great sequel to the original movie. Exorcist III however was done really well. Great cast, brilliant writing, great job on utilizing past characters and story while not completely copying it. George C. Scott was absolutely incredible as Kinderman. But as always "Chuckie" kind of stole the show. Exorcist III did what Exorcist Believer failed to do. It didn't try and change the way the original was done, or change the plot points. It kept the continuity of the original movie 100%, while adding new and inventive ways to continue the story. Exorcist Believer had Chris McNeil basically mock her own decisions from the first movie even though SHE was the one who begged the Church, the Priest for help, the mocked them decades later. The Blumhouse movie was in my opinion a flop, and for the same reasons other classic franchises flop. They tried to change what made them good in the first place. Classic franchise fans DON'T like their favorite franchises mocked, altered, or used for a woke agenda. For me, Exorcist III is the definitive answer for a great sequel.

    The most annoying thing about the ending to me is the idea that a priest can just show up and perform an exorcism at a moment's notice. It takes months of investigation into the case and requires the permission of the local bishop before a priest can do an exorcism, and he would always have a team of people to assist him. The original got it more or less right.

    Also from what I've read, this movie was not meant to be branded in the "Exorcist" franchise and meant to be a stand-alone, but the studio wanted to cash in so the "Legion" story was remoulded as a direct Exorcist sequel.

    Sort of yeah. The novel is just called “Legion”, which was also the original title for the movie and it’s what the director’s cut is called. But it was always a sequel to the exorcist featuring the same characters and it is a continuation of what happened in the first novel and movie. The title had “Exorcist” attached to it for brand recognition but this isn’t a situation where the story wasn’t a sequel and then got deformed into one

    100% agree that this film is a masterpiece, and if only people would realize that George C. Scott is playing Kinderman, and Ed Flanders is Father Dier from the original would make it even better, because even I missed that as a teen. To have a film from detective Kinderman's point of view is imaginative and I'm sure the book is better, but as an ADD person, I don't read books, sadly, so it's audio books, which is fine with me. To be blunt, I was 21 when this movie came out and it scared the SHIT out of me. The hospital scene made me HATE walking in hallways for YEARS. Oh, and Fabio is in the Heaven scene !!!! 16:15 is the most important part and I never understood it, thanks, Evan.

    Have you seen The Ninth Configuration? That's a sidequel of the Exorcist that William Peter Blattey directed based on his novel which saw the Astronaut we see in The Exorcist going to an insane asylum after freaking out when he was about to go to space ("You're going to die up there" as stated by Regan before peeing on the floor). Legion was the 3rd book in Blattey's faith trilogy and The Ninth Configuration is never called a sequel in film because it was made by another studio, but it is the defacto sequel to The Exorcist.

Back when critics has more influence, unlike now where they aren't taken very seriously. Also it came out in 1990, the year that had a ton of sequels and only a few did well.

    Isn't it strange that perhaps the greatest horror film ever made would inspire one of the worst sequels ever made, then one of the best sequels ever made? Yet anyone who's seen all three films is likely to agree. Interesting to note that this isn't the only time George C. Scott followed in Lee J. Cobb's footsteps. He also played Cobb's character in William Friedkin's remake of 12 Angry Men. Also interesting to note that this film was a favorite of Jeffrey Dahmer.

    In the final scene when Kinderman enters the cell after the priest has been killed by the Demon that is now controlling the body of Karras, the Demon seems surprised by the 'resurrection' of the priest. The Demon exclaims 'you!' after the priest lifts his head and tells Kinderman to fight the Demon. Almost everyone misses this detail in their reviews. I am convinced that the priest is dead, and that the body of the priest is inhabited by another celestial being or angel. Perhaps even by Christ himself. If it was still the same priest, then the Demon would not be surprised and would not be defeated. The priest already gave it his best attempt and was killed because the Demon was too powerful. Kinderman is on his way to that same fate when this good deity intervenes.

  • @RocklinGraves

    @RocklinGraves

    I’m not sure I’d say it’s something people are “missing” if it’s just your interpretation of what happened in the scene. You could also interpret the demon just saying “you” out of frustration for the priest surviving. I do like the theory but yeah it’s not like something’s going over people’s head. It’s not in the novel and there’s nothing concrete beyond one word so it’s just theorizing

    Exorcist 3 has it's moments but I don't think it's that great. There are certain scenes that could be cut down in length, especially the interview scenes with Scott and Dourif. It's ok but saying it's the greatest sequel ever made? C'mon lol! The acting is a lot better in this sequel compared to the 2nd, and some of the suspense is well built but unfortunately the wheels start coming off. The film dialogue is similiar in ways to Blatty's other film, The Ninth Configuration. You'll see some subtle similarities between Exorcist 3 and that film.

  • @RocklinGraves

    @RocklinGraves

    9 ай бұрын

    Well to be fair I didn't say it's the best sequel ever made, the title is a question... BUT that being said I couldn't disagree more about the scenes between Scott and Douriff. Those are some of the most chilling, compelling and intense conversations I've ever seen between two characters in that sort of context. I'm very comfortable saying this is one of the best sequels ever made. Not an uncommon sentiment either, but it's all good if it doesn't go that far for you. Comes down to preference at the end of the day but it's an incredibly well-crafted movie.

  • @RocklinGraves

    @RocklinGraves

    9 ай бұрын

    Also the reason I’d put it in the category of one of the best sequels ever is because of how hard it is to follow up something like the exorcist, and this probably the best example of a movie following up something that’s as iconic as the exorcist is

I’ve talked to plenty of people from other generations who even prefer this one to the first. Also the gemini killer absolutely kills with a motive. He primarily targeted people with K’s as a first letter of one of their names as a way of getting back at his father Karl Venamun, and then he was targeting people related to the exorcism as a form of revenge for the demons that were using him. He’s not motiveless at all, it’s very targeted

It is inconceivable that a sacrifice as great as Karras's to save the girl would result in eternal damnation, although the 1990 movie makes that a 15-year damnation.
