Anderssen - Morphy (1858), Paris FRA, rd 9, Dec-27
Sicilian Defense: Paulsen. Szen Variation (B44)

After having cemented his status, by virtue of his triumph 1st American Chess Congress (1857), as one of the greatest masters in the world, Morphy traveled to Europe to play Howard Staunton and other chess greats. Morphy made numerous attempts at setting up a match with Staunton, but none ever came to fruition. Staunton was later criticised for avoiding a match with Morphy. Seeking new opponents, Morphy crossed the English Channel to France.
In Paris, Morphy suffered from a bout of intestinal influenza. In accordance with the medical wisdom of the time, he was treated with leeches, resulting in his losing a significant amount of blood. Although too weak to stand up unaided, Morphy insisted on going ahead with a match against the visiting German master Adolf Anderssen, considered by many to be Europe's leading player. Despite his illness Morphy triumphed easily, winning seven while losing two, with two draws. When asked about his defeat, Anderssen claimed to be out of practice, but also admitted that Morphy was in any event the stronger player and that he was fairly beaten. Anderssen also attested that in his opinion, Morphy was the strongest player ever to play the game, even stronger than the famous French champion Louis Charles Mahe De La Bourdonnais.

Morphy was amazing -- a self-taught American who came out of obscurity to beat all the top players in Europe (where the highest standard of chess was back then) by putting a lot more attention on pushing the pawns. Anderssen was the reigning world champion, but Morphy beat him 7-2 (with two draws). The next truly home-grown American after him was not until Bobby Fischer. (Capablanca was a Cuban, even though it was merely a province of the US in his time.)

Cuba was a satelite of the USA. A province recive benefits. The gringos sucked the well from Cuba and gave nothing back except protection to the ruling class. Our history has been one of submission to imperialists countries. Remember the Soviet Union.

You might want to check your records regarding the Worlds highest chess standards back then. Due to the suppressive Colonial Powers of that era you can only surmise this statement. As this Game hailed from the middle East somewhere over thousands of years ago , you can only speculate that Europe had the best players. Recent history has taught me that as the Eastern Nations was the cradle of all western education, I'm very confident that greater chess players existed at the time but were not in a position to compete. All the same Morphy was a very good player , the best? We will never know for sure. Today's multimedia channels makes it very easy for the Greatest Minds to be exposed to the World. Back then only the wealthy excelled in exposing their talents.

They just hate everything and are poor miserable souls with not an ounce of goodness in their character. Some people have such unrealistically high expectations of good free videos, they nit-pick every perceived flaw. It doesn't really matter what other people think but it's whatever you like that's important. However, if you make videos for a living then it is important. Antonio generally gets greater than 99% likes so he is doing exceptionally well. He is bright, articulate and has a great command of chess analysis. I'm a fan of his videos and commentary.

Hi, OK I am getting old and my memory is not what it used to be. Morphy is the reason we now use clocks. Playing a match he opened with e4 and the response was d4. He played Nf3 and waited. and waited. The shadows moved across the wall and still he waited. Being very polite he held back as long as he could before finally asking "Excuse me are you going to move?" His opponent who was lost in a daze came too and asked "Is it my move?" And he then required clocks be used in future matches.

LiChess in 1858?!?!! --- what, did they use the telegraph?!? That WOULD be quite draining. Especially since the first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable was shorted out that year, just one month after it was completed (which took 4 years!). The next transatlantic cable was finished 7 years later..... Can you imagine(?): "Waiting for opponent to Move...." ..... 7 years later... .......knight G to F3.... ... "Okay, Now what do you do here..."

Very nice to meet you! I am trying to set up a low to medium level chess gatherings, in a public big chess board in Amsterdam. (1053 post code for anyone interested). Some of the bases of your analysis and some of the positions that you show are very good examples of particular pieces of theory. I am recommending your channel (as well others of course) to the people that are involved in our small chess club (nothing on profit just me enjoying the game and teaching some youngsters). I hope you will be getting some views from Holland. Thank you. Salute to the dog!
