One of the BEST Mistercraft Kits?! Fairey Fulmar in 1/72 Scale - Build & Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Fairey Fulmar was a Naval fighter and reconnaissance aircraft which saw service during the second world war. Having a requirement for a crew of 2 due to the belief that a navigator was used for operations at sea, this resulted in a larger design compared to contemporary land-based fighter aircraft.
Join me in this video as I build and review the 1/72 scale Fairey Fulmar Mk.II plastic model kit from Mistercraft, and explore what makes it one of the best model kits from this manufacturer (which is probably saying something).

    I was a little kid when I used to go to a local bakery in my neighborhood where the son of the owner worked as the cashier. When there were no clients, he would work on his model builds right there on the counter and I would always watch while I was there with my mom. He had his finished models displayed under the counter, it had a glass window display. With mostly war vehicles, airplanes and tanks. I was always amazed looking at those models, they looked so well built and beautiful to me. Since then I always wanted to do it, but I was very intimidated by the commitment, skill and tools needed. These model building videos on KZread now are slowly giving me the courage to start with this hobby. Until then, I'll keep watching. Just subscribed as well, very nice content. Cheers from Brazil.

    It's a familiar problem. All artists that never become artists have feared that a less than perfect result reflects on them somehow, expecting to be judged, and give up, being their own critic and hobby-ending judge. This is a fallacy, to be ignored. Build the model you want the way you want it, and always try to something better next time. Us older modellers are continuing to learn even now.

    Just bought the AZ version of this kit which comes with some photo-etch and resin. Sadly the resin wheels had been glued to the underside of a wing resulting in some 'meltdown' of the wing surface (AZ have a replacement in hand). Good outcome to your build and it gives me some confidence to start on mine.

    Nice work once again Matt especially on the canopy. One thing have you considered regarding the canopy, have you thought of first applying the cockpit interior colour to it before main colour(s) are added, so when the interior is viewed, it shows the interior colour not the main colours. It does work on larger 1/72 but does really start to stand out from 1/48.

  • @ModelMinutes

    In my experience the Mistercraft PZL Karas is the best kit from this company. It's so good because it's one of Heller's best 1/72 kits in their range. Plenty of detail and easy to build. I've built all boxings of this Fulmar,Vista being the best being the original boxing. A nice cheap kit for scratch build of different versions,eg. aftermarket decals and scratch built antenna for a Radio and Radar Jammer version and basic spare parts addition for a periscope for a training version with spare decals used for markings.

    In service, most Fulmars were painted in uppersurfaces of Extra Dark Sea Gray (EDSG) and Slate Gray with Sky undersides. Some early Fulmars were seen in EDSG and Slate uppers with light grey undersurfaces, but this was a short-lived scheme.

  • @MCT954

    @MCT954

    Early Fulmars were delivered in an underside colour called Sky Grey. By the time of Torch, the undersides would have been Sky. Sky was used on some Naval aircraft up until the last Gannet AEW3s were retired in 1978. Post war it was a standard colour to BSC381c as No 210 Sky, and is still to be found in paint manufacturers catalogues under a variety of names. I am pretty sure it was to be found on hospital walls in the eighties

    It looks OK Matt. I personally would stay away from Mistercraft kits. Most of them look garbage. I can recommend a couple of things you could try out in future builds. Have you ever tried Mr Surfacer? Its a liquid filler. Comes in various thickness's. I think this stuff would have been good to paint into the wing root gap here. Once dry, it can be either sanded, or rubbed off with a cotton bud dipped in Mr Color Levelling Thinners. More layers can be applied until the joint is satisfactorily filled. The other idea is for panel lining. Have you tried Florymodels Clay Wash? The Dark Dirt version is great for panel lining. Once a Gloss Coat has been applied, you paint the whole model with the stuff. Let it dry for 20 minutes or so. Then you can wipe it off with a paper towel, moistened with water or good old spit lol. Once wiped off, it leaves the Dark Dirt effect in the panel lines. Plus is you don't like the effect, you can just wash it all off with water and start again. Search Florymodels KZread channel for a few tutorial videos on the stuff. Look forward to the next build mate.

    @@ModelMinutes Mr Surfacer works good used as a primer too. The 1500 variety is labelled as a primer. Has to be thinned with Mr Color Levelling Thinner though. The Black version is great as a primer, but it can be hard to get. Usually sells out quickly. If you want to try out the Florymodels washes, you could just buy one bottle of the Dark Dirt variety. They only cost £5 a bottle. They do sell a full set of 8 colours too. They have recently released a range of thick washes. But I haven't tried those yet.
