Full Build | Revell Avro Lancaster B.MkI/III - 1/72 Scale Plastic Model Kit | Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Avro Lancaster became the iconic British Heavy Bomber of the second world war, in part due to it's large bomb capacity and good performance. These two factors made it suitable for a number of unique, difficult and high-profile operations during that conflict.
Derived from the earlier and unsuccessful Manchester medium bomber, the Lancaster went on to perform with distinction during the war, whilst also finding it's way into a number of different roles including maritime, reconnaissance, cargo transport and civilian use. Finally though, it was replaced by an updated derivative of the aircraft known as the Avro Lincoln in the mid 1950's.
Join me in this video as I build and review the Avro Lancaster B MkI/III plastic model kit in 1/72 scale from Revell.
The model and diorama took about 3 weeks to build, the video took a full day to edit and upload too! So this is a big one!
This first part features the build of the Lancaster, whilst the second part will cover the build of the diorama including the creation of the base, painting the figures & scratch building the scaffold.

For those of you wondering what an Avro Manchester is, it's a Lancaster but with only two engines. It had a very short production run, and was retired from service in 1942 as the Lancaster was an all round far better aircraft. Great review; looks like a fantastic kit and you finished it superbly. What a great model.

I remember a story of a pair of mechanics watching the first Lancaster their squadron had, on approach. One grumbled 'Another Manchester!' His mate said 'Uh the Manchester has /two/ engines..' May be apocryphal but still funny :)

  • @AnthonyBrown12324

    @AnthonyBrown12324

    Жыл бұрын

The Manchester had 4 engines 2 in each cowling . The Vulture was 2 Peregrine engines coupled . The Peregrine engine was troublesome ( powered the Whirlwind ) but coupling them caused even more problems . Rolls Royce abandoned these engines , just not worth the trouble , when the Merlin was becoming increasingly better . Interestingly The Heinkel 177 was a similar idea to the Manchester ; using DB601s ; but the Germans persisted with it ; despite the problems of cooling etc. when adding 4 engines probably would have led to a successful aircraft .

My first Diorama I build as a kiD was the Revell lancaster Dam Buster G for George with "Secret Bomb" that kit was a late 70's kit and thus to today's standard quite rudimentary. I took a shelf out of my dresser and covered it with coloured sawdust and some plaster of Paris as tarmac. Then I added the Airfix RAF figures and the RAF Airfield Rescue and Ambulance models. as well as the Airfix refuelling set. I was so proud. :D Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

To solve the silvering problem just brush that area with Tamiya Extra thin cement. WARNING! DO NOT OVERBRUSH IT, if you do it, you it will eat the decal and ruin it,so just a tiny bit, and the silvering will vanish..... All in all, its just as I expected, the best kit you posted on your chanel so far: The weathering is moderate, as it should be, paint dryed incredibly well, as I can't see any brush strokes or what so ever, and you nailed the varnish work, as satin coat is the perfect choice, thus making the kit look more realistic, than it would work with a coat of dead matt varnish. I think you might just have a chance to win if you' d send this one out to some competition..... All in all a great kit, great work, worth every penny and time you spent, and diorama is just ideal for this kit... Might suggest some RAF gas truck on the grass, but, its not obligatory.... Well done Mat, you maxed it out!

Great build - always love a Lancaster, and your results are very nice. I noticed the same thing with the rear turret falling out when I built mine - makes you realise just how exposed those guys were back there, with the turret more 'stuck on' than being an integral part of the aircraft.

I too use spray cans for primer to give a nice start, and spray varnish for decals. I had the idea to keep the disused Merlin engines to make a mk2 beaufighter, which is still on the horizon...still, I've been thinking of this one for a while, so many thanks, very therapeutic to see it made the old fashioned way, cheers

I built the earlier version of this kit when I was a kid and later got the airfix pre-2012 kit was much better than the 60s kit. But it was still fun. I moved away from scale modelling to model railways and have been looking at giving aircraft another go, though storage is a concern for the larger planes like this. Great video with some useful tips. I know its a few years old now, but everything should still be relevant i think other than games workshop reformulated nuln oil recently, so anyone getting it may find it more glossy now. Army painter tones are a decent alternative.

I had one of these, originally produced in dark green plastic. It must have been from one of the very last batches to be made with Revells original moulds, because there was so much warping in the fuselage and wings, and body gaps around the engine nacelles, that it was impossible to produce even a half decent model from it. In the end I threw the whole thing away, the only model that I have ever discarded. This one looks to be a retooled version and is a vast improvement on what went before.

I figured out the baseplate problem but it involves time-travel. We had no CA glue in those days. With Krazy Glue you can cut bits out of paperboard and soak the bit with CA, plasticizing it. This actually works. We had no Krazy Glue YET we won the war...wait...the modeling war. We called ourselves "builders" and "crew".

Good job !

FYI, the 2 chairs behind the pilot are for the Navigator and Wireless Operator NOT the Flight Engineer. He didn't have a permanent seat, just a folding canvas seat to the right of the pilot where he could access the fuel cocks etc. The Flight Engineer often stood for the majority of the flight.

"Props...always...spin! What planet are you from? What is your mission, airman?" in high John Cleese falsetto. If it was the sixties I would have made a baseplate from spare bits. Might take me...a week! You had to be a bit nuts to build those Aurora 99cent kits.

On some occasions I've wanted to use an airbrush, yet never have. I've built many WW2 era piston fighters in 1/48 and bombers in 1/72. Brush painted with no sign of brush strokes. Thin layers are the secret ingredient here. Many though have been coated with spray can clear. I bought an airbrush and baked bean can sized compressor, but they still remain unused. Old habits......eh.
