@Bond James Bond ok fair enough, the first automobile v12 was in a sunbeam in 1913 granted this was a racecar. still 3 yrs before bmw was founded.Anyhow you stated bmw invented the IDEA of a v12 automobile in the 1980's which is a false statement. Packard offered the first production v12 automobile in 1916, Ferrari has been doing it since 1949, lamborghini since 1963 when they first set-up shop. There were 10 or more manufactures offering v12 automobiles in the 30's and 40's. Don't you remember the jaguar xj12 E type? 1971 was when that bad boy was rolling down the highways. Point being the man custom built a v12 out of 2 existing windsor blocks utilizing cleveland style heads ( putting v8 cleveland heads on a v8 windsor block isn't easy). Understanding metallurgy to weld all that together and create an engine to produce and endure 600+ hp in a small shop is quite an achievement. So i suggest to you is to hop on your lil' vespa,git on down to the library an bury yer nose in some history books.

I hope an executive from Ford sees this

I welded a broken steel crank one time and it held up. But what this guy did is astounding.

Man, that thing really winds up... sounds like they were pulling 6,000 or better.😁👍 *EDIT:* Just saw the dyno results, actually took it to 7700 rpm!!😮

I don't even have the proper words for this other than the most awesome 12 I've ever seen

Ford small blocks built after 1962 ranging from 221-351ci are all part of the Windsor engine family until ford switched over to the modular v8s. So no matter plant the 5.0 or 5.8 was built its technically a Windsor family motor.

***** I'm glad someone mentioned that Ford doesn't use small and big block to label their engines, they never have and never will. It seems like some people here don't realize the 351m and 400 are two different engines. They interchange completely minus the crank and pistons (the only difference between the two). The 351m only came about so Ford would have a 351 ci engine once the Cleveland was discontinued. Yes the 302 falls into the Windsor family.

***** The 400 was developed for low end torque which the 351w does not have. In the truck world a 351m is a better candidate than a 351w. I'm sure Ford didn't focus on the 351w exclusively after the Cleveland was discontinued because it was probably cheaper to destroke the 400 into another 351 engine than it was to expand a factory to produce more Windsor blocks. I knew the 302 and 289 weren't cast in Windsor, I've just always heard of them all being grouped into the Windsor family just like the 351m and 400 are sometimes called Cleveland engines even though they were cast in several different foundries. If only the aftermarket world would have spent a little more time getting terminology right we wouldn't have things like people saying their Ford has a small or big block, posi rear, or stepside box.

Peak HP looked to be coming in at about 7,000 rpm! This thing is a monster!

There's a guy up here in Rhode Island that took a 300 straight 6,beefed up the bottom end, and fabricated a head out of a boss pair by chopping 1 of the heads in half and then welding it to the full head to make 1. that engine ended up in a early 70s maverick and he went drag racing. painted on the side of the car was a picture of him holding a V8 in his hand with a caption that said,"i could've had a V8!" lol i think he said the car rans 9's.☆☆☆

177SCmaro you can absolutely build a V12 with a flat plane crank, good example is a Ferrari 333sp-6 litre v12 spinning over 10,000 rpm, if he can do this with a a couple 302's he can do that with a couple voodoo's. I would almost consider donating my left nut to see that happen.

You really dont want those junk Voodoo engines unless you plan on safety wiring the oil cap to keep it in the cam cover...oh and keeping extra starters and trans bellhousings on hand since those flat-plane 5.2's vibrate so bad it destroys starters and cracks bellhousings. Also, you might want to make the track pack oil cooler out of billet steel since the vibration causes them to snap off.

From what I can see, the crank throws are at 120, 240, and 360 degree intervals with a 90 degree block you've still got a piston at TDC every 30 degrees. I don't see how this is an 'odd-firing' engine. Looks good to me.

A V12 needs a 60° or 180° bank angle for even firing.

Love how he says the smoke isn't from the engine, but from a loose exhaust fitting. Pretty sure the exhaust, and smoke in the exhaust, came from the engine.

Ford Fan 2904 I Dont think this is the first odd firing V12. V12 engines are even firing at 60°, 120° or 180°, all other angles are odd firing, right? There have been many engines made with V bank angles other than the three I mentioned. I know at least one 30° design has been used in both aircraft and automotive applications, the Lycoming/American LaFrance V12. I have to agree though, It does sound amazing.

Nicholas Alexandrides I think you are getting mixed up with firing angles & V angles! The V angle of the block is a physical measurement of anything above 0 degrees to just before 180 degrees - a 180 degree engine is a flat engine e.g. Volkswagen/Porsche & Subaru! What Jan Baker is talking about is the firing of the engine in one complete revolution of 360 degrees!

The aligning is the easy part. You mount the two blocks on a frame so that they are aligned as well as you can get them. You turn a rod that goes in place of the crankshaft and one that goes in place of the camshaft. You could also put a heavy plate across where the heads go. The hard part is welding the cast iron blocks. I don't know the exact material Ford used in their 302 V8.

@@doug112244 These would have been standard cast iron, unless he sourced some of the high nickel cast iron variants that were sold through SVO (at the time) or from Mexico in the early 70's. Windsors were state of the art thinwall castings, so there wouldn't have been a lot of material to heat or fill *but* this dude is one hell of a welder because those thin cross sections are not easy to do properly without warping or cracking.

Aligning them is easy as can be. Don't forget that the crank is essentially a straight rod with bits sticking out, camshaft is the same. Insert the rod in the Mains and clamp it all up, same with the rod instead of the camshaft. Once that has been done the really difficult part is getting the block prepped and heated for welding, and then welding it all.

My concern would be if you are going to heat the whole mass how much temperature will the bearings take or for that matter how much heat will the crank and camshaft take. I really wish they had talked about welding the two blocks together as I see that being the difficult part.

That thing is pretty awesome, maybe when you get that perfected you could try your hand at putting two 300 inline sixes together, now that would be an awesome engine.

20 times the work, for half the power. 300's are not a performance engine, and sticking 2 together won't change that. Slapping a dohc head on it can though, and that's a lot easier.

This was done before any LS V12 that I know of. The first prototype of both engines make similar power, though the LS is more refined with a Haltech and EFI, this ford sounds ANGRY. I guess it's comparable to a 450hp LS (or any modern V8) and a 450hp old school carbed V8.

I think the LSV12 sounds better because it's cylinders fire every 90 degrees like a V8, it runs like 1.5 V8s. This thing fires every 60 degrees as he says like a pair of I6s.

@@hendo337 I know the guy who ground the cam for this engine and no it doesn't fire every 60 degrees. It runs like two in line 6 cylinder engines offset by 90 degrees so that makes it an uneven firing V12.

Welding Cast Iron is a royal pain in the ass and if done wrong, ughhh it's ugly. Alignment is absolutely critical for camshaft and crankshaft harmonics, let alone bearing clearances. Even with long honing bars, the camshaft would be particularly difficult. It's clear that this engine builder is a true welding master. Probably preheated the blocks very carefully and in stages. May have had several assistants helping him with welding torches keeping the block hot as he welded. I imagine that once he started welding the blocks together, he didn't stop either. It had to be a one shot deal, up one side of the block and down the other side asap. Or have two welders going simultaneously. If the block could be cast as a V-12, then I would agree with you. Ford's existing V-10 is actually a pretty decent engine and can be built to the same horsepower and torque numbers this V-12 makes. Both are RPM limited unless everything is absolutely perfect. I've built one V-10 to 550 HP and 590 ft lbs of torque to a self imposed redline of 6,000 RPM. Crankshaft bearing support isn't all that strong in the V-10 and not all that great in a 302. (unless you start with a new Boss 302 block made by Ford Racing). The V-10 sucks fuel like water going over a waterfall. The V-10 crankshaft fires every 72 degrees, a better balance than then 90 degrees on one bank in this V-12 that's offset 30 degrees from the other. Why he chose this pattern is explained. I think it probably had to do with distributor / ignition limitations. I imagine this V-12 burns as much, probably more fuel than the V-10. Given that he is using 2V Cleveland heads, they breath very well. Running 1,300+ CFM of carburetors. Ouch. The heads and bore spacing of the 302 blocks is superior. But it's still bigger than the V-10 and I'd hate to shoe horn the V-12 into cars of any vintage. The weight of the V-10 tips the scales with aluminum heads at 625 lbs. This V-12 is probably 875 to 900. Possibly more.

hmmm. with the new aluminum blocks, or OEM steel, it would probably be easier i would imagine. but welding aluminum is a bitch if i recall.

Doug Hanchard no doubt but i was thinking some more like a production/casting line perhaps...not make ones from salvaged V8 parts,,,,but i geuss im only dreaming ($$$$$$$$$ is required + the know how)

Doug Hanchard indeed,,,,maybe it should be posted on the donate sites to fund the required amount for it to happen,,, i think the only advantage here over a v12 is an even smother balanced combustion because v12 are inherently balanced and abit higher engine rpm for the same given displacement as for the sound im completely sold the size of the thing might be something to consider..well because making a v12 version of an older engine design isnt going to be like a compact high end modern v12 ..if most likely going to be large pardon the grammar ummm...how much we are looking at to mass produce that thing and make it happen,, i might be able to pull some cash for this

Extremely impressive! There was a guy many years ago who had worked for Ford for decades and had been working on a 2/3rds scale 302 (for a 2/3 scale Mustang!) As far as I know he's still working on it...

really does sound like 2 straight 6s at once... pretty sweet engine

Build me a 1967 NASCAR, 427 SOHC.

Ford GT90....look it up this is what that engine made me think of since the gt90 block was 2 v6 grafted together. This is 2 inline but close enough if you are talking ford gt

Veikra this is not two inlines. Its two 302 v8s chopped up into one v12

Lovely sounds and creatively jaw dropping. I had a novel idea of cutting down a sbc into a Vtwin once. Never got futher than chopping a cylinder head up though.
