One Marvelous Scene - Hulk's Fall From Grace

Ойын-сауық

Hulk used to be one of my favorite Avengers, now not so much. His transformation back to Bruce Banner in Thor: Ragnarok perfectly encapsulates everything great the Hulk once stood for. Here's why Hulk isn't as good as he used to be.

    I would have been fine with Professor Hulk if he had kept more of Hulk's traits. There are some, a lot of his mannerisms are Hulk's as he was in Ragnarok, and he also has the more jovial and easily amused side Hulk shows, but still there's way too little of him compared to Banner's personality traits. He should have had a few moments of anger (just not destructive like the Hulk's is), and I agree he should have fought at some point, before losing his arm, to show that he still can throw a good punch. That said, I still wish they'd gone down the route of keeping Banner and Hulk as separate personalities, but having them actively cooperate as needed. That's what I thought was going to happen after Banner's "ok Hulk we need to talk" moment in Infinity War.

    Which explains how Hulk would’ve evolved that much intelligently. He goes from saying “Puny God” to having his hair cut, wearing beads, knowing what a towel is, relaxing in a whirl pool, and having an honest sense of his own strength and able to draw comparisons between fire and water. He knows his strength is fighting “Giant Monsters” and is self aware enough to protest when Thor calls him back. That kind of growth and self awareness would have taken DECADES and it all started in the Jet. I wish that was more touched upon in the film, because I missed it the first time.

    I feel like what Ragnarok gave us was that it showed us that Hulk is his own person as his own character. He's not just a rage monster. He's funny and has a sense of humor. He is his own person. And that's why he hates Banner, because Banner gets to be the one in charge most of the time. I think Hulk is bitter and hates banner, and we will see the two of them come to a resolution in Endgame so that Hulk and Banner (two separate minds/characters) respect each other/work together.

    I agree, not the best video in terms of visual. Not a big fan of the music choice either, besides Halo. But then again I fundamentally disagree with this guy on this subject. I've always found "old Hulk" to be immensely boring. He shows up and punches some things in a big action scene that's all show and no tell. Thor: Ragnarok is my favourite MCU movie for a lot of reasons but also because Hulk is actually interesting in it. The problem with Hulk in the MCU, like he says, is that they hint at an arc and then never give him one. I like Ragnarok because I don't really care about Hulk but I like Banner, and he had space in Ragnarok because there weren't 5 other main protagonists about that needed attention too.

  • @scripteddan

    @scripteddan

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@trouts4 I also don't understand why taking the stance that turning Hulk into a "baby" for one film is somehow this massive disservice to the character. The long track of Hulk over the MCU is playing out and his time on Sakaar was one step in that journey. Hulk was becoming selfish, Bruce even says that it felt entirely different from how it did before and I'd imagine before Hulk had to grapple with not having an identity aside from "the monster". It's a core part of his character in Ragnarok, that no one loves him on Earth but here he's a lauded, spoiled child. Maybe they poke more fun at him than they should, but I can't imagine Ruffalo would be THAT interested in playing Hulk the exact same way he has for Avengers 1, 2, and now Ragnarok. I feel like the underlying argument to the entire video is "they changed him" which is fundamentally the opposite of what I want from the MCU films. I want to see the characters in a different light, not just have Ruffalo show up and have a director say, "Okay do what you did in those other movies." That's just boring. Jokes have always been framed around the Hulk in the MCU films, god forbid they make them in a film with a more comedic tone that people generally enjoyed. I've watched all the other Marvelous Scene entries on the playlist and this is the only one I disagree with, not in terms of the scene, but because of his interpretation of the character around the scene. And yeah Gubz, my dude, you gotta equalize your music a bit more. It's so loud in the beginning and just after the 7 minute mark. It is overpowering.

He tries to keep control over their "body", but not malevolently. In fact it's very similar to how Banner wants to stay in control. I do hope the arc is completed with them finding peace with one another, but naturally and not artificially.

    Totally agree, and I think the worst thing about Marvel is the way humor is used. They're afraid their audience will get bored or offtrack if there aren't constant jokes. The scenes that dare to be deep and dark and profound are the best. Best example would be Doctor Strange, the scene where he's finally a hero, looks up in the mirror and the cape just ruins the tension by twitching. It's like Mads Mikkelsen's evil Guy joking with Strange : sure it's a tad fun but then your antagonist is, himself, a joke. Not someone you fear

    I believe hulk’s degradation in infinity war can be attributed to the size of the cast. Making a movie with a cast on such a scale would have some impact on the individual characters. As an analogy, I think the Russos invested their points into some things on the skill tree(the other avengers) but laid back for others(eg. hulk). Hulk has definitely not been written as well as the others, but I think that can be improved on in endgame, since the cast has been halved

    One marvelous scene to me from all the mcu films up to endgame. Is in infinity war. When Thor and rocket are alone talking about their pasts and all of Thor’s losses. A god, a being that you would never think to see weakness from is admitting that he has nothing to live for and the only thing keeping him going rage and vengeance. It’s a short but powerful scene. Showing even the most powerful of people have lost so much. I will never forget that scene.

    The Hulk is a very intriguing character a lot of people take for granted, and it's honestly been that way since the start of the MCU. He's just been oversimplified to "the big strong green one," but he's so much more. Banner suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, caused by witnessing his father kill his mother. Caused by his father almost killing him, as well. This other personality is infantile, but full of insurmountable rage and aggression. He's a tragic man trying to suppress his dark side and not let his anger consume him and harm anyone else. He sees himself as a time bomb waiting to go off and hurt everyone he loves. That's a very interesting and compelling character if done right.

    In AOU he was calmed down by the scared people. He would have gotten up and probably won if he didnt see them. Ragnorok it ain't fair to say anyone was smashed because we never saw Hulk get insanely angry and at full power. He got hit once and was shocked but that was it.

    I'm a lifelong Hulk fan, and I feel the pain of my brethren. Hulk has been steadily stripped down to nothing, his last good scene was in Avengers. 'I'm Always Angry' literally put my entire theater on their feet. And it's been nothing since - I don't know who this is, but it AINT. THE. HULK. So I'm going around, trying to help my brothers out. Because I found the Jade Giant again. He lives, and he is truly awesome. For those who are hurting for a truly badass Hulk again since Disney is trying to bury him in the MCU, read the Immortal Hulk comic. It's one of their hottest comics now, and its the first really well written Hulk comic in my opinion, and I have read every Hulk comic in the Marvel app. As a lifelong fan, even with all the changes with this Hulk, it is by FAR my favorite. And he's back to being truly overpowered. Like WOW. Also , the writer has read his audience, knows what they want...it's like the plot points in Immortal Hulk are DIRECTLY giving the MCU Hulk issues the bird.
