One major flaw with the 2ZZ-GE

Engine is still running with a 1ZZ oil pan, this is my daily driver, I’ve taken this car to the track 5 different times with no oil starvation issues. Car currently has 275k miles and is chugging along.

From what I understand the 2ZZ has a stud girdle and some kind of windage under the crank throws. The bottom of the engine has a lot of oil control, so I think the engineers thought they didn’t need it because of that!

In all seriousness though, so long as you keep your oil levels in range and use the correct viscosity you’ll be fine.. your friend probably didn’t check his oil and let it get low or has other issues that lead to knocking. Also, instead of using a steel razor on your aluminum mating surface, I’d just recommend a good set of nitrile gloves and some acetone or MEK. And to prevent sealing issues from the pan id also scuff the mating surface of the pan to get a better adhesion on that black paint

There's oem baffling between the oil pickup on the 2zz. If you're doing a lot of time at the track, then install a better baffled pan. I've never had any issues with the oem oil pump and I've owned two XRSs. That issue is linked to driver error with mis-shifts. I had the notorious 3rd gear synchro prob on my first XRS, but not with the 2nd XRS.

  • @Bobaganush26

Actually it wasn't driver error. I had the 2000 model and went thru two engines before Toyota finally put what they called was a shift kit on the six speed. Something to do with the syncro's. After that, it never happened again. I was going from 3rd to 4th gear both times when it happened. And I WAS going straight down into fourth, but second gear was engaging. I've never had anything but a standard shift. And I know how to drive one. I was hitting fourth, but it was going into 2nd. But it only happened when I was racing and into high RPM's. If it was driver error, Toyota would not have fixed it for free both times. Warranty doesn't cover driver error

Hello 2zzlow. Great vid :) the optimum oil pan for the 2zz is a properly baffled sump made by elise parts. The 1zz pandoesnt really have a baffle as such, what you can see on the pan is called a windage tray. When redesigning the engine for higher rpms, the windage tray was causing problems with oil return, but also power loss due to higher pressure in the sump from the higher rpms the 2zz was designed for, so they took it out. If regularly thrashing/tracking a 2zz engine, its best to put a baffled sump but one without a windage tray. The moroso has a baffles, but also a windage tray, the eliseparts sump only has baffles, is brilliant, with neodinium magent to catch metal crap in the oil, and a super low friction non-stick to help the oil drain back down to the pickup quicker. Also, cant remember where, but saw someone comment that yamaha only redisgned the head. Not strictly accurate as the 2zz was given forged conrods as standard to cope with the higher power and rpms, a yamaha modification :)

Read a Toyota report regarding the 2zz oil pan vs 1zz baffle. Turns out under testing they decided to not use a baffle as this had a negative affect on the oil returning to the pan base at high revs. Essentially the baffle slows down oil drainage into the pan... However never heard anyone complain after swapping to a 1zz plan like I'm doing. Great video by the way =)

  • @jonathancolling2284

@@DeepRacer-zr4yp yeah, that was a typo. The 1zz pan has a windage tray, often people think that the 2zz doesn't have that because there is nothing in the pan itself. The baffling plates in the 2zz are in the block, not in the pan, that helps the oil to reach sooner the oil pick up surroundings so it doesnt starve. So that's a common mistake. What do people do? Slap a 1zz pan in the 2zz, but with that windage tray, what you're doing is actually preventing the oil from reaching the oil pick up surroundings as quickly. So this means the 1zz pan in the 2zz is doing more harm than good. Add more than 1 lateral G and you have a perfect storm that leads to disaster, almost every time the 1zz pan is involved. There are exceptions though

Good advice. This will be one of my next maintenance items to carry out. Toyota engineers are good at what they do, but they’re still human beings. Since they screwed up with the early lift bolt designs, I’m not surprised that there are other design flaws as well. I don’t track my car, but I want to have a piece of mind if I ever run into a tight corner at higher speeds. Plus enough drivers have run into these issues with the 2zz, so it’s a real problem.

If you doing road course, autocross, rally racing or doing spirited driving along a mountain pass, then yes change the sump. Baffled sumps are better for when high gravitation forces are involved in cornering. If you still think its nonsense then you are not cornering hard enough or three wheeling your car around a bend or not an engineer as myself.

I think the more oil you have the better. I think toyota made the 2zz oil pan this way for a specific reason. If your oil level is never low and you dont go on a track. I think the 2zz pan is alright. The problem ofter happend when in lift on a corner. the cylinder 1 starve from oil and it does permanent damage. I'm not a 2zz professionnal mechanic. I own a 2zzge celica and its such a shame that there are problems with this engine that rule it out as a proper all time classic, yes its a great engine and it probably flows better than a b18c for sure but like the oil pump problem and the weak ass 6 speed they pair with it is trash like my mate has the corolla xrs with the 2zzge and we both have the 4th gear crunch when downshifting and we both have the same problem when you shift from redline in 1st to 2nd unless you do it perfectly you will get 2nd gear lock out. And the clutch they use is the same as the 1zzfe but with i think 10% more clamping force so they tend to wear out around 240,000KM which isnt much tbh. other than that i love my car just a few problems they could of easily fixed but seemed a bit lazy especially with the clutch. Oh and the metal matrix cyilnder coating too oh and also... i do think the 99 year which is mine is the best 2zzge since you get 190HP which is pretty much the MAX output but lift kicks in at 6000 instead of 6250 or on some 6500, honestly sometimes im in third gear waiting for lift to kick in and wish it engaged at like 5.5k RPM tbh but nah great engine, really under rated to the point its pretty much a cheap B18C you can buy for half the price and if you get the 7th gen celica with the TRD factory body kit its a pretty sick looking car, just keep in mind you cant thrash this like a honda.

my friend had a 1zz corolla, he ripped it up a windy hill and starved it of oil. oil was full. engine went bye bye. the baffled pan doesnt do shit. better install a better baffled pan for tack useage.

I’m not saying this is a track ready replacement. I only daily the car now and 7k miles later the car is still fine. Later on when I’m ready to track it I’ll upgrade to a moroso.

@@2zzlow than goodness you didnt correct my spelling mistake as a point. but if youre swapping to a moroso pan later whats the point of a 1zz pan? youd think theyd do the same to the corolla too if they wanted to sell short blocks.

1 year late and i agree its true but the 1zz sadly doesnt have lift for the higher end of the powerband to pick up even further which does make me wonder if someone has made a tuner that can change the range for lift to come on a little earlier

@@dr.dylansgame5583 there are lots of ecu options that can control lift, but it can come on too early and be useless. most people have it at 5800 for a na build but with a built engine and turbo you can have it much lower at below 5k

@JEY 2zz owners won't admit the 1zz is more reliable, won't admit that 1zz has better tolerance to turbo boosts, won't admit that 1zz celica is better track car because it is lighter 100kg, won't admit that we have more torque. Reason why I left celica community totally. I drive my celica and mrs in peace without social media because 95% of 2zz owners are clowns.
