Thanks! Synthetic 5w-30. It consumes a little oil because of the ring gap just like any boosted engine. Basically by the time the oil change (5000miles)ish is due it 1/2 quart low.

Very nice man, been thinking about doing up my little 02 Rolla, been a faithful car for over 10 years and need to show it some true love, found a nice outback (Yeah i am Aussie) stretch just to see what she is capable stock, she hit 215Kmh (133mph) near redline in 5th gear, not looking for crazy power and been contemplating going one of those Rotrex superchargers over a turbo (because i don't trust my feet and a turbo would bait to easily), just wish i had half the tools you have!

Detonation yeah have given my little 1zz a fair bit of punishment over the years, but approaching 200 000kms (124k miles ish) i am going to need a full rebuild if i do anything to it, been eyeing off monkey wrench racing in america for parts because any shop i asked about doing up here said it would be hard to get parts, took me 20seconds to find mwr! So my plan is get the parts and find a good shop that doesn't mind i got the parts even if they charge more, my hardest decision is do i get another IM (2zz with plate or get one fabbed, not much space under the bonnet for sc, actually waiting on a mate to do up a 3d printed dummy of the rotrex, he has to design from scratch, to see where i will fit it, with stock IM), bonus with going for rotrex i don't really need an IC so i can run shorter piping. But the question i seem to run dry on an answer for is "can i run the TB and MAF before the Charger so i don't need a blow off valve?" because they consider them a cause of pollution here in Australia (ikr compressed air is pollution lol)

I ended up ditching the fic because of the wiring and the tuning... just got a power fc for my boosting needs. which is pretty amazing :) and did you use 03 Pistons? I know the 02 and lower have smaller oil drain holes which a lot of people agree is the reason why they break :( again great work and hope to hear back from you! check out my boosted mr2 spyder ;)

I purchased the pistons long before I realized I made the mistake of getting the wrong year so I modified them by drilling out the holes to lubricate the ring properly..

Hey Aaron. How did the 1zz hold up with the stock rods? I have always worried about my stock connecting rods . I was actually communicating with a guy from track-group-dot-com just today as they work on the 2ZR engines for the Lotus Cup cars. He assured me that Lotus does nothing to the stock internals of the 2ZR before strapping on and tuning the Magnusun supercharger. I guess that's rated at ~220 bhp, but revs higher and has a perfect tune. I see that there are performance outfits that offer upgrade packs for the supercharged Lotus 2zr cars, pushing them up to 285 hp, still with stock internals. I'm still very happy with the performance of my Yaris, but feel a little more confident now about upping the boost a touch, maybe to 10 psi. I built and installed my own water/methanol injection system. If I could reach around 200 whp, I'd be quite satisfied, I expect. Interested in hearing more about your turbo 1zz. Anything you can tell me would be great! Still entertaining the idea of a forged build for either my 1NZ or a 2ZR. Thanks!

I am not the best example for the port job I really just did what your doing and watched videos and gave it a shot. After said and done I'm happy with it though! It definitely made a difference. Easiest way I was able to tell actually was when I blew a boost pipe and it was back to NA. It was allot better especially up high in the Rev range. Tips, I'm no expert. I started with gasket matching to get the port size and went from there. Made each grind and cut the same in every port then knife edged the split. The only other thing I can say is don't "Polish" the ports. With boost you want extra surface area for heat dissipation. Tiny scratchs and scrapes you leave behind make a huge difference with dissipating heat. Absolute perfection is not necessary and definitely not beneficial. Good luck!

@@camilledavid6936 Three main areas to address when turboing a 2zz. Would be a good idea to lower the compression to 10:1 if possible. Would also be a good idea to replace the oil pump gears with billet and add ARP rod bolts. The oil pumps have been known to explode at high rpm and the rod bolts are a bit weak for boost. Also change out the lift bolts pretty much anytime you have the valve cover off. Theyre prone to breaking, esp. the rounded OEM ones. They're cheap insurance to replace but a bitch if they break off. I know, my spare 2zz has that problem.

Thanks! And Ya, I regret using a FIC, I'm wish I used a full standalone that would be in parallel with the stock ecu so I can have obd2 connection for nys inspection. Also wish I used a larger turbo. It's super fun but I think if the power band was shifted a little higher it would be even more fun.. A Gt2860rs would be perfect. Also for donts, don't worry about the fuel pump. The OEM pump without return will be fine for 250-280hp. Replace with OEM with a fresh one but upgrade isn't needed. I used a blow through for the MAF sensor, don't do that, I'm not happy with it. Relocate the MAF to the turbo intake. I wish I did those things different but still very happy with the outcome. Very quick, responsive and so much more fun than factory with very little effects on normal driving mpg.

I literally have all the parts sourced and priced, but the EMS is keeping me from doing it. Seriously considering a NOS fogger kit just for fun..... Any reccomendations on a EMS less than $400 That is easy to tune? BTW you earned a SUB!

Thanks for the sub!!! I think the EMS is a great choice.. The ECU is something you should not cheap out on.. Although i think it depends on a few things.. If you live in a state that has a state inspection than you should stick with a piggy-back to keep the CEL off and the OBD port working.. If you live in a state without inspections, and (this is important) want to work very hard at learning all aspects of tuning and gain what i believe to be very important knowledge in the world of building cars, than get a megasquirt standalone ECU, not one the PNP ones, but one of the universal kits like the MS2 or MS3.. I have a MS3x on my personal fun car.. I learned SOOOOOOO much making, building, failing, figuring out, diagnosing, winning and finally racing with my time using megasquirt..

The county the car is last registered in WA does not require SMOG tests or inspections so I am waived. At this point I'm thinking the 1zzFE is a pipe dream. I'm seriously considering a Lexus IS300 2JZ build, or the more serious option is a Honda/Acura B16 build. Try to find someones old project car that has a management system on it and rebuild the motor from the ground up. I think the B16 is the most cost effective $/HP build.

Unless it's a race engine and/or you have the capability to build it yourself in almost all cases a salvage yard engine will be the cheapest option. Of all the engines I've swapped for customers or myself over the years I've had very good luck with well researched salvage yard engines. Check out car-part.com if you're in the US. @@remissiveslave You would want to buy the whole engine. Something we call a long block. Anywhere the oil flows such as the cylinder head, etc. Is compromised because of the metal flowing through it. But yes, anything on the outside of the engine that's working will be swapped over to the new long block. That's part of an engine swap. For a good mechanic this specific engine swap is very straightforward. Don't get me wrong, an engine swap is hard work no matter what it is. It's still 6 to 10 or more hours worth of work.

Allot of engine builders go from wrench to racetrack. I do a few heat cycles of running the engine as various RPMs, 2 or 3 oil changes during this time. Do some driving and tuning, do another oil change when I get back. Not a perfect situation but it has worked for me for many years.

@@junglist1soldier Driven daily. I've been building a long time. This particular project was a "how cheap can it be done" kinda turbo build. I use cheap oil but high micron filters for those first few break-in revs and runs. Then switch to the oil and filter your going to use for the life of the engine. First few oil changes should be done soon. So say two or three oil changes every 500 miles. I'm sure that's over kill but it's something I've always done. I'm not saying a proper break-in period isn't important. I'm just saying it's not a practice that's set in stone. Many engine builders go from wrench to track with little more than a few heat cycles. I guess it's preference. IDK I have engines still on the road I built decades ago that I used this same method with.

Spent a few hundred on it replacing the shot cooling system and cleaning the OCV, unfortunately my new larger competition grade radiator meant that the air box needed to be moved back ever so slightly so it's now hot zip ties holding it in place.
