absolutely disgusting how a councilman has the disrespect to say he disagrees with the fire department on why they need it. Are you a volunteer Councilman Haldeman? For you to argue with men & women that volunteer their own time, and safety to help protect YOUR community, you're arrogant asf. 100% of these firefighters are people in your own community.

The thing he’s not thinking about, is that most firefighters are very influential people. They have the respect of many people in the community, the same ones that VOTE. The councilman should keep that in the back of his mind.

All these people complaining about the fire whistle being loud, obnoxious, and want it silenced will cry "Where is the Fire Dept" or "Is the Fire Department even on their way" if their house is on fire or their loved one is in a MVA. The fire whistle not only alerts the volunteers to come to the station, but also signals the call was received and firefighters are on their way.

But I believe most of the time in this town's case that the Volunteers do show up. Like the Chief said in the video, one of his Volunteers was eating breakfast just 2 blocks away, pager never went off, but he heard the whistle and showed up.

Lets see. Langhorne is located in southern Bucks county near Levittown, and is a northern suburb of Philly and adjacent to Trenton, NJ. There are 99 companies in Bucks county, of which most are probably fully or at least partially volunteer. From what I can find, the average number of runs for most surrounding departments is about 400 to 500 runs in a year. At 450 runs divided by 12 months rounded up, that's 38 calls a month on average. Depending on what the county SOP is regarding siren activation and if the department assists the township EMS squad with calls they may or may not sound the siren for EMS runs. If they do, that's 38 times a month that siren goes off on average. Thats about 1 to 3 times a day if calls are consistent, but since they never are you'd probably see a day with no calls followed by a day with 4 or 5. So, they are fairly busy but not nearly enough to were the siren is annoying. But I'm biased after all, I'm a fireman and a volunteer.

The one reason we still use it so the public know when there is a fire and there will be members responing to the station and also during the summer that if they are using water to shut it off . I agree it doesnt need to be oparting at night.

Oh, you guys don't like the siren? Tough. The people who save your lives rely on it to know when its time to come do exactly that. Sirens like these sound across America every single day, hundreds of times a day, calling thousands of people into action to do one of the most important and noble duties someone can ever strive to do: Saving Lives. Much like the mechanical siren on the front bumper of a fire engine or truck, that siren is a sound of Hope. When it goes off, it lets everyone know, Hey, Help is on the way. On that principle alone it should be embraced, not replaced. On top of that, lets not forget that sirens like that house siren are also used for storm warnings too, like when tornados roll through. If cell service gets knocked out because of a storm and than a tornado forms, that siren can be activated by county emergency services to tell residents to seek shelter. No matter how you slice it, without that siren people die. Leave it be.

I used to live 50 yards-if that- from a volunteer station and with a house full of people on Thanksgiving I did not hear it. It's not as foolproof as one might think. The fire service is 200+ years of tradition unimpeded by progress. Sirens and horns have been decomissioned in hundreds, perhaps thousands of volunteer communities and I haven't heard any reports of people dying or entire blocks burning to the ground.
