Onboard No.9’s Incredible Unaided Haul of 13 Over the S&C. For Old Times Sake!

The Fishwick Fellsman of 2nd August 2003 was loaded to the maximum 580 tons as it was scheduled to be hauled by the mighty 71000 Duke of Gloucester but a last minute failure resulted in 60009 Union of South Africa being drafted-in to deputise even though there was no diesel back-up!
Hobson’s choice at Manchester meant I had to settle for a door window in the first coach but this turned out to be a blessing when capturing the A4’s (compared with 71000) more muted exhaust, making this video as much about the sound as the visuals.
Leaving Blackpool North I give a brief taste of the stations and climbs on route as we quickly make our way to Hellifield and Settle Junction. Here the real test begins and I feature the majority of the 15 mile climb to Blea Moor. If you were ever dubious about an A4’s pulling ability, this will leave you in no doubt about their capabilities.
Having reached the approach to Ribblehead Station, I suddenly noticed a problem with the camera and it took until the other side of Ribblehead Viaduct to sort it out. Luckily I filmed the same route over the S&C behind 6201 Princess Elizabeth in 2002 and so for completeness I have inserted the crossing from Pathfinder’s “The Cumbrian Fellsman”.
Trespassers permitting, we head over the top of the route for a service stop at Garsdale before diving down the Eden Valley, finishing with one last brilliant acceleration from a stand before we pull into Carlisle. As the A4 finally departs for servicing we are sadly reminded that; for No.9, scenes like these are already consigned to history and fond memory.
Footage is cropped and re-mastered 4:3 format SD.
This video from 13:55, along with: • Onboard for 70 minutes... from 27:18, cover the climbs each way over the S&C.

Thank you for sharing this video, I have very fond memories of this tour despite being 14 at the time. Me and my Grandfather were by one of the support coach windows on the other side of the train, although I see my own much younger self sticking out of this side a few times! It was a fantastic day thank you for letting me relive it!

A throughly enjoyable watch from the archives, Alan, many thanks for uploading it. Excellent sounds and visuals that 'take you there' on a nostalgic journey. Interesting to reflect on the state of the S&C at that time - vegetation everywhere and temporary speed restrictions but still the old jointed track in abundance, happy days. Great to see the Garsdale water stop too - much missed, and a great performance getting away from there and up to Ais Gill. Amusing to see a younger version of myself in the video too, but I shall not say where..! I believe this was driver Gordon Hodgson's last steam run before retirement with EWS (before he came back for West Coast and gave many more happy years). Many thanks indeed.

Hello David and thank you so much for such a kind and interesting response, I really appreciate it. Even though to my mind anything from the 2000's is "modern" I have to pinch myself to be reminded that the lad hanging out of the window on the climb to Settle probably has kids of his own now! (am I close?) And as you say, so much has changed on the S&C and (thankfully) on the Ribble Valley Line, which was pretty rough back then. I will personally miss 60009 as it was one of the first loco's I filmed from the lineside when I switched from "stills" in 2000. Best regards, Alan

Fantastic film,....just looking at how run down some of the stations were. The difference in the track when on wooden sleepers as opposed to the later concrete ones. As a note, the fireman did an excellent job with little evidence of too much black smoke. Lovely film, I shall watch it again when I have the time

Thank you for re-uploading this video. A really wonderful soundtrack amply demonstrating the power of an A4. Thirteen on is a good load but during WWII my late father had a run behind Mallard with 20 on! He timed it and said it was doing a mile a minute for some of the journey. Do you know who the driver was on number 9? Thanks again.

  • @Steamclips

Hello Bruce and thank you for your question. We were bedeviled by trespassers on the day which certainly accounted for the stops at Settle Junction and Blea Moor boxes where the crew were given advice. Am not sure why we stopped at Langcliffe but there is a caravan park near that location and there were spectators everywhere I remember. Regards, Alan

#Steamclips - I am not surprised regarding the pulling power of an A4, in the locomotive steam trials the unsung hero of the A4 class which also should have been preserved in the national collection is 60033, Seagull. Who when not knicking chips whilst storming past the seafront at Dawlish, was putting everyone else's engines to shame in the Western region who were finicky about their engines due to the Western's gradients. Yet did we get an A4 as a British Railway Standard Class, no we ended up with LMS designs instead done to the constraints of a light Pacific Class of locomotive designed by OV Bullied, these Southern engines were blasted off the Western region by the A4. The class 6 was either loved or hated by its crews with poor steaming performance. These engines were a lighter version of the Standard Class 7 design aimed at increasing the route availability of the locos. Class 7s were better than the Class 6 and was slightly less Marmite to their crews. Both the class 6s & 7s would be out done by the superior tractive effort of the A4s which was the heaviest of the three loco types. So one could argue whether anything was learnt by the Steam trials in the first place!

Hello Bill and thank you for your really interesting insight which I enjoyed reading very much. I would have to agree with you regarding the worth of the 1948 B.R. exchange trials but the 1925 exchange between the GWR and LNER brought real benefits to LNER locomotive designs, especially regarding valve events and draughting. Regards, Alan

@@Steamclips- When I was reading your video description it was nice to know that she had still got her great tractive effort and thrilling her passengers. It is sad that number 9 will be no longer with us on mainline steam. So thank you for posting, It was good of the GWR to allow a competitor to do a technical evaluation of their locomotives. However I suppose with them not being 'near competitors helped. Thanks for your compliment most appreciated. I am waiting for a video of a platform announcer (probably working his last day) on a Network Rail station saying: "Will passengers stand well clear of the platform edge as a 'real train' is passing!" It is great seeing these locomotives pulling 13 coaches which makes you ask why have we got over crowding now! Regards Bill

When will those idiotic trespassers learn? I've a good mind to create a model railway video about trespassing on railway lines. Sorry if I sounded out of tune with myself, but it annoys me to see an incredible journey like this spoiled by trespassers. Preserved Railways have suffered this problem themselves. We can easily live without it. Nice to see No. 9 and Princess Elizabeth working hard in any case.
