100 m.p.h.? 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley. English Riviera Express. 2023 Wind Up
Here is a short compilation in route order of unpublished clips of this season’s Saphos Trains “English Riviera Express” tours featuring 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, including "a dream" finale. I was hoping for two more clips before publishing but the substitution of 46100 Royal Scot for the remaining Saphos tours has curtailed matters as those runs will feature in another video.
We start at an unusual location on the “down” leg at Kingskerswell where we see 60007 emerge under the Aller No3. Overbridge through wind and drizzle as she heads up the valley before bursting past in a dramatic close up.
Next to Goodrington Sands in what became fairly typical weather for this summer. Heavy drizzle is passing into the background as the A4 appears at the currently unused Goodrington Halt and climbs past the hardy beachgoers braving the conditions. A quick dash and re-position provides a “going away” shot around the headland into Broadsands Bay.
The return is first captured at Teign Harvey on the Teign Estuary where 60007 seems to be lazily cruising down the riverbank. However, when you consider that 6ft 8in driving wheels cover 210 feet (nearly 65m) every 10 revs you will find that she is travelling quite quickly and making a fine sight in the process!
Around the coast at the farthest end of the Teignmouth Sea Wall is Holcombe near the mouth of Parsons Tunnel. Once again we catch brave souls shrugging off the elements before quickly climbing up to rail level for an uninterrupted and close up view of the passing train. Mercifully, the sea walls here and at Dawlish (for the most part) have not been defaced with Network Rail fencing! ….. Yet!!
Our last location is again an unusual spot (only easily accessible on two wheels) overlooking the wetland reserves at Exminster Marshes. 60007 is finally allowed “off the leash” running at 71.6 m.p.h. on this 100 m.p.h. stretch and makes a fine sight as a little afternoon sunshine starts to break through.
WHAT IF???
What is she were allowed maximum speed here? what a sight that would be!
Let’s increase video speed by 40% and find out.
It has been a real privilege to see and film such a magnificent machine in Devon during the season, her lovely lines and shiny blue livery have definitely brightened things up!

So good to see Sir Nigel enjoying his working holiday on the English Riviera. 😉 I found the sequence at Holcombe to be especially stirring - I could almost smell the steamy smoke! Thanks for your posts - I enjoy them all out here in rural Thailand.

Thank you for the superb cinematography and the view we could get at 100mph. Stirring stuff, but I salute those footplate men of the past who earned a living with that daily rough ride in a confined dirty workspace.

'Rough ride'? It was always said that the A4s rode like Pullman cars - one reason why, on Silver Link's maiden run in 1935, the 'Jubilee' twice made it to 112 and managed 100mph for 40-odd miles. Driver Taylor was going by ride comfort, thinking he was doing no more than 75-80!!!

@@paulcaswell2813Hi Paul you are correct in regard to Taylor’s account. But for many of the steam era the rough ride was a reality. It was called the Iron Horse for a reason. And it was dirty and confined.
Excelent photography. We have a static caravan on a holiday park close by that we let out and you can hear the train. It is a very nostalgic and wonderful sound.

Quite rear to be able to see a steam loco still running 100 mph so nicely with 12 cars plus that dummy diesel. More than 500 tons? A4 still flies.

Well, it was hardly 100 mph indeed, as there's the restriction of 75 mph for steam locos on the mainline.
I’m going to miss her here down in the southwest a cracking machine and loco have some nice video clips of her near taunton and the area

Goodrington Sands featuring Philistines on the beach, their heads must be so heavy their neck muscles have atrophied🥱🥱 Sorry Alan but that maths lesson went straight over my head😵💫 Some great shots from the cutting room floor, she looks good whatever speed she's doing👍👍👍 That bathers shot reminded me of when we used to surf in October, no wetsuits- they're for the wusses. Time it was back in an LNER livery . British Railways under the LMS mafia would never have built an engine like this . The kylchap exhaust fitted in the 50's is no excuse ,was already used before the war on this class .

Alan Steamclips is always chasing a steam railtour, no matter where it goes. This dull and dismal day was no exception. I know I like to write about him being surprised by something unexpectedly, so here's another I'm sure every enthusiast would love to capture on camera. Tired of chasing main line train excursions for a first, our dear friend Alan decided to ride on a preserved railway: South Devon Railway, which isn't very far from its much bigger sister, the Paignton & Darmouth Steam Railway. The young man snitched a ride behind two Great Western steamies, who turned out to be resident Collett Goods engine no. 3205 and 3440 City of Truro, on loan from the NRM. City of Truro was standing in for one of the Pannier Tank Engines, who was suffering an overheated axlebox. "Nice surprise," mused Alan to no-one in particular. "Hope you like it," tooted City of Truro, as if she'd heard what he'd said. "What's not to?" asked the young man smiling. Alan alighted at Totness Riverside station to watch the run-round operation. After both engines had been coupled up.... "Fancy a footplate ride?" invited City of Truro's Driver. "Keep quiet and you can ride with us back to Buckfastleigh." Alan knew he could never refuse this sort of offer. Alan went home as black as the Ace of Spades, from head to foot. Who could possibly refuse a cab ride on a preserved railway? No me, that's for sure.

@@Steamclips Your vid clearly stated 100 mph on a clip near the end. Your video (if, indeed, it was your's) was no doubt to give the watchers the impression that she was doing that speed.

Read the description and you will see that there is no way I tried to mislead watchers, I make it very clear that the speed has been increased by 40% in order to create an impression compared to the preceding original clip.
