60007 Sir Nigel Gresley Goes for a Spin. The English Riviera Express 24Jun23

Saphos Trains excursion from Shrewsbury to Kingswear steam hauled from/to Taunton.
An A4 at speed!
It is 28degC on the tinder dry Exminster Marshes as the A4 speeds past at maximum speed whilst further down this fast stretch of the GWML at Powderham, the heat haze from the fields blur the distance and the stiff warm breeze from behind blocks the approaching sounds as the train races by.
Later at the Churston turntable, things have calmed down and we get to see SNG in all her glory dressed in B.R. blue which I think suits her so well. After a short pause whilst the service train passes (hauled by 75014 Braveheart) 60007 reverses into the works yard for her tender to be watered.
Spot the three distinct conditions of "hi-vis" jacket: the bright and occasionally used "Sir Nigel Gresley" jackets outshine the slightly more used "EWS" which in turn puts the much heavier used (and no longer "hi-vis" at all!) of the local D.S.R boys looking like they need replacements PDQ!
The return is captured in the tranquil rural surroundings of Greenway on the climb to Churston before our final view and audio treat of this beautiful locomotive in full cry up Torre Bank and through the station on her way back to Taunton.
Note: the diesel on the rear of Saphos trains is there mainly to provide power to the kitchen car although it also provides enough tractive effort to account for its own weight on climbs.

Some really jazzy shooting George!!!!!!😂😂 Loving the Churston turntable shots, the ground crew seemed a bit disinterested and the two out of sync operators was a bit distracting😊!!! She certainly does look great in blue and even better down yonder!!! Thanks Alan for braving the Summertime heat.👍👍👍👍

Hi Bob, always love your witty feedback, I'm sure we have a lot in common, apart from the obvious! I have just added an amusing observation to the description that you might enjoy. Bear in mind that any visiting locomotive is entirely in the charge of the local crews whilst on P&DR metals and the "top link" driver, for want of a better description, is the guy in the white shirt. I have never seen him smile but I am sure that he enjoys his work! It was hot out there though and even worse for those on the footplate. Very best wishes, Alan

At least the engine didn't get stuck halfway up a steep hill. I can just imagine that happening and Lydham Manor coming to the A4's rescue, just like she had to do with no. 9 and Bittern.

Remember Scott that the diesel has to not only provide power for catering but also to get itself up the bank without adding load to the train, so it will be showing a bit of effort. Kind regards, Alan

Most enjoyable Alan... thankyou for sweating it out. Writing Braveheart off as a 'service train' is a great disparagement: the loco is still a heritage machine, and not some DMU! One of my 'divertissements' is to trace the route of old forgotten rail lines by viewing Google Earth/Maps. Right here is a good example: the spur to the TT is on the original line to Brixham, and the old ROW can still be determined by the trees, embankments, etc. The rural parts might be walkable, I suppose, unless the landowners have claimed them back.

Hi and thank you for your kind, interesting and very much appreciated feedback. I can assure you that there was no disparagement intended, it was merely a statement of fact: whilst an excursion visits the D.S.R the regular timetable service trains take priority in order to maintain the operating schedule, much as they also have to give way to service trains on the mainline for the same reason. I must admit however that living close to the line as I do and being a shareholder of the Dartmouth Steam Railway & Riverboat Company, familiarity, though not exactly "breeding contempt" does make one a little blase' when you see the local steam trains out of your window every day! That (jokingly) said, I never forget what a priviledge that is!! Regarding your comments/question about the old Brixham Branch, I am sure that you will be more than interested in this: brixhamrailwaytrail.org.uk/ Best regards, Alan

@@Steamclips Thanks for all that, Alan. When the railway was first operating as a Heritage Line (early 70's IIRC), I used to pretty much ignore the steamer taking kids to Churston Grammar when I drove to Brixham to work, so I can relate. That simulation featured in the RailTrail link is interesting. Some work went into it, eh. BTW - if you can find a copy of the Nov '21 edition of Railway Modeller, you'll see they published my article about my Churston station model.
