On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: PhenomeNATO Straps, New, Improved, Perfected?

On this episode we take a quick look at one of the top premium NATO strap producers in PhenomeNATO. Their original releases had only one little nitpick, the buckle just wasn't up to the standard of the rest of the strap. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as great as the rest if the strap. Since it's initial release many other strap manufacturers have been improving their materials and designs to close the gap between their offerings and PhenomeNATO's but with the new updated and improved buckle, these straps take another phenomenal leap ahead of your traditional nylon military-style strap. Let me know what you think in the comments below, thanks guys!

I own both the Omega and Phenomenato nato straps and they are both the same quality. The only difference is that the Omega Nato strap is high chrome polished. The Phenomenato strap is about 1/4 longer. Both nato straps are the supreme quality.

Great review! I was looking at these for my Stowa Flieger that is on its way, so seeing your review on a Stowa made it easy. I went for the Admiralty Grey, can't go wrong with that classic color.

March 2020 comparing the Omega James Bond NATO strap to the PhenomeNATO James Bond strap. The PhenomeNATO strap is equal to or better than the Omega strap in every respect. The PhenomeNATO has a finer weave, more refined edge weave, slightly deeper gray, longer, and has equal hardware. The PhenomeNATO is $40, the Omega is $160. The only downside to the PhenomeNATO is it takes over a month from order to delivery.

Nice review. I didn't realize Phenomenato improved their straps. I'm a big fan of their original design. One thing I think they got right that the other premium seatbelt manufacturers got wrong is using round holes that are close together. The cheap NATOs, Omega, and Phenomenato got it and that's why they fit way better than all the other brands. They offer plenty of holes and with them being round as opposed to being square they are closer together allowing a much more perfect fit. I always find a NATO needs to fit snug not loose. it kind of doesn't feel right to me if it's loose. With those other brands, I either got a tight fit or a loose fit. With Phenomenato and Omega and the cheapies that's never been a problem. Did Phenomenato keep the holes close together with the improved design? I hope so because Omega's prices are outrageous and I like the premium feel and build quality of Phenomenato's straps.

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. The holes are made in the same way, and distance as the ones on my first straps. I've only changed the buckle (and also the sewing is improved since ~May 2017)

They always compare Phenomenato as the perfect alternative to Omega’s OEM but is it measured exactly 20mm or like Omega’s 19.5 to fit both 18 and 20mm. Can you please measure it for me? Thanks!

Nice. I have one in Bond pattern from Phenomenato. I have no qualms to the build quality and feel of their straps. Top notch. My 2 biggest gripes across all NATO style straps still remain. The 2nd layer strap material and the incorrect floating keeper (or lack there of one). I still don't see the point of having the 2nd layer of strap material. As you sort of mentioned, these types of straps are already redundant for securing the watch head to you wrist if one of the spring bars fail. I just don't see why you need the 2nd layer as it adds nothing. FYI, I believe the reason it is there is to provide a little relief to the spring bars so you don't have to tighten the strap as much when you have that extra layer.. And, it somewhat holds the watch head in place to make it less likely to slip out and off the strap when holding at least 1 end because the main strap piece the watch head is attached to is interlaced with the 2nd layer. But, again, these nato and really zulu strap designs are redundant in securing the watch so there really shouldn't be a chance of double spring bar failure. They, and many others, could do without the 2nd layer as it's really useless and adds height and bulk no matter how much thinner they make the strap piece. Forget the NATO design.. i think the single pass which is essentially Zulu design works much more efficient and does the job. That 2nd layer is a complete waste of material and labor, in my humble opinion. 2nd, as previous Phenomenato straps have, the floating keeper helps to secure the loose tail end of the strap. BUT, I find this first keeper, or the one between the buckle and the last/2nd keeper, floating less useful than making the last.2nd keeper floating. It is more useful to have the last/2nd keeper float to custom secure the loose end at ANY length. that's what's most important. doesn't matter if the NATO length is too long or too short for you, you can always fold over the loose end and the last/2nd keeper can always be moved to secure it. Even if you have really big wrist and the NATO is short and you don't have to fold it over, the last/2nd keeper floating can accomodate that situation as well. The way the phenomenato is designed, you don't get that flexibility. Phenomenato make a solid nato strap. the quality is there. I just think the design can be augmented and improved still with the 2 above gripes.. and that applies to nearly every other NATO strap design out there save that of at least Haveston with their latest A2 update which is quite possibly perfection... and if I'm not mistaken, I believe Monta's "NATO" (really Zulu) style straps also have the same functional design as the Haveston.. Although they still have that useless 2nd strap piece, at least they have adopted the floating last/2nd keeper which is more important from a practical and functional standpoint. Maybe Phenomenato or other brands don't want to change or adopt the 2 features I feel would make it perfect just to not be like that other brand.. IDK, to still be their own thing?.. But, hey, I think that's an oversight and they should make them like that. I'm not sure I would say the latest from Phenomenato have enough new and improved features for me personally. For me, Haveston sits firmly as te best single passthrough strap design, more of a "zulu" style if I can call it that.. is that proprietary? And, the last/2nd floating keeper is the smartest design to secure the tail loose end of any strap of this type. And, the price sits at a reasonable premium range I'm willing to pay, too.

You can always cut off the 2nd layer and use a lighter to prevent the edge from fraying. Haveston aren't the only ones who make single layer seat belts.

@@DJogdogof course Haveston aren't the only ones who make single layer. it's not just the single layer, but the fact the 2nd/lasr keeper floats which is the best adjustable keeper that will suit any length of loose end to secure be it short or long, it can basically always be the perfect length. The end 2nd/last keeper is the one that can accommodate the most. And, i believe the Haveston's are now better setup you dont' even have to fold over the loose end since the 2nd/last keeper floats, it can lock down without a fold at any length.
