On the road with Mexico’s female truck drivers - BBC 100 Women, BBC World Service Documentaries

Clara, Liszt and Paty are breaking gender barriers in the male-dominated cargo transport industry - they are some of Mexico’s traileras, women truck drivers travelling long distances on the country’s dangerous routes.

Robberies and abuse are part of the hazards they face in the job - but the traileras are determined to overcome adversity. BBC 100 Women rides with them as they work to make a better life for their families and change the face of the next generation of drivers in Latin America.

08:10 Meeting Paty, the trainee
09:46 “I always dreamt of driving a red convertible”
11:53 Pit stop at La Lupita: “Roads are unsafe now”
13:40 Held at gunpoint: The story of the robberies
17:29 How to stay safe at night
18:16 Hope: “Companies are giving women a chance, but there’s still work to do”

I am an Australian Heavy Combination driver myself and most folks only last 6 months in the industry before quitting. It is not lack of money, there is good money to be made. It is the lack of social life, the fatigue on days off you feel where you need a solid days rest to start to feel on a normal level of energy again. It is a harder job than many realise. It is not just steering a wheel like you steer a car. You are always reading traffic and predicting with high accuracy what people are going to do and not do. You are regulated to a high degree with fines that would make a millionaire start to weep. To all brothers and sisters of the road. Safe travels.

Glad for you that you can say the money is good in your country... Here in the USA most Drivers are lucky to average minimum wage....I need to explain than often over one half of the tasks are unpaid...Basically Free but being preformed by the Driver...Pre Trip and Post Trip Inspections..Tires...loading and unloading...Fingerprinting...Breaking down and re-stacking...pallets to please the shipper and receiver....Tarping and un tarping....securing and un securing the loads....spotting trailers ...sweeping out empty trailers.endless waiting to load and unload..and driving deadhead miles... That is why there is this imaginary US Driver Shortage...

I understand when Clara says…you feel like you belong! I feel the same way. I feel privileged to be able to be part of this family of truck drivers and very happy that I am blessed to be surrounded by great men who are willing to help and are very respectful and kind. I’m not a long haul driver; I transport wood chips but still, this new career is making me very proud to be part of this fraternity. It might be intimidating at first, but no more. It takes very strong women to do what Clara and Liszt are doing. I clearly don’t have the courage necessary to do that! :) Hats off to you ladies!
