    Love how much more Middle-Eastern and Asian lore Elden Ring has compared to other ' traditional european fantasy setting' games and books. Theres just so much more than just a mention of a 'distant land'. Theres Tuareg/nomad muslim swordsman class, The Great Caravan of the merchants throughout the entire Lands Between, the Samurai class and the Land of Reeds weapons and clothing, The babylonian-esque architecture of the ruins around the Eternal cities. Its great :]

    One thing I noticed as relates to Melania is that she reminds me a lot of a character from (Hayao) Miyazaki's manga/film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind named Princess Kushana. She's a warrior princess with (gold) prosthetic limbs that is fighting to stop her kingdom from being consumed by the Sea of Corruption (a giant fungal forest that spews miasma and rots people's bones and flesh over time). I see many of the themes of the Aonian story line paralleled with that story, most notable being the focus on rot and purification being intrinsically tied together. Although the Sea of Corruption in that story has a different cause than the scarlet rot in Elden Ring, I find it interesting that the fungus in Nausicaa grows in layers, the bottom of which is a purified layer where clear rivers flow and the air is pure. Reminds me a lot of the Ainsel and Siofra river lore and the Fairy/Blind Warrior you've been elaborating on. I don't really know the significance of this if any, but when you mentioned mudras it reminded me that Ranni's blue body patterned after Renna looks a lot like depictions of Vishnu.

    It’s hard to know where Miyazaki’s ideas end and JRR’s begin and vice versa, but I feel like the Blue Dancer/Blind Sword Master concepts remind me of in A Song of Ice and Fire series that the Bravosi people that were venerated for their swordsmanship called their instructors “Dancing Masters”.

    I like how all the characters you discuss seem very gentle. The swordsman seems like a helpful, kind person. Even Malenia despite her ruthlessness seems genuinely kind and loving, especially towards Miquella. Miquella himself also is extremely virtous to the point of self-destruction. It's nice how atleast a few of these demigods strive to do better than some of their other kin.

    It is interesting that Renna has even more parallels to Frau Holle. Because the German fairy tale about her is first about the conflict between half-siblings when the mother of the former is replaced by a stepmother and in the end Frau Holle rewards the diligent but neglected daughter and punishes the other. Although it is mostly about the death of the mother in childbirth, but was also Rennala replaced by Marika of Radagon - which then also had the say in the family. Frau Holle, a kind of good spirit who was mainly responsible for the snowfall in the spirit world, tested the two half-siblings according to their virtues and diligence. Even if it is a justice-loving fairy tale, I find it funny to hear about it as a German to Elden Ring. (Interesting because it is otherwise almost never taken as a template for anything)

    The Renna talk made me think a fair bit about the Moon and related bits. Rennala when she was young encountered a Full Moon, but when leading Ranni to have such a discovery she encountered a Dark Moon. The moon in Vedic traditions serves (among many things) as a symbol of the cycle of life and incarnation. Personally I'm spitballing but having Ranni, Rennala, and Renna I have to at least entertain a triple goddess analogue, particularly Hecate. Moon in Vedic tradition also embodies intellect and emotions, and the alignment can influence if its positive or negative. Interestingly the Moon also holds a large amount of Soma, a drink of immortality. Lastly I'm reminded of Chang'e, a Chinese moon goddess who obtained immortality through an elixir provided by a deity widely called throughout Asia the Queen Mother of the West and then went to the Moon. There's plenty of variations on the tale on her motivations and her consort, but my mind was drawn to it considering the journey to the moon and all.

    So weird tangent but is Dragonlord Placidusax possibly elden John or related to him some how? Because we know that the ancient dragons could turn into human (look at Vyke’s dragon waifu) and that placidusax was the first elden lord, so he had to have a large deal of knowledge to build farum azula. He also, just like all of the souls dragons, has stone scales. Elden John holds 2 stone tablets both of which are broken, just like placi missing heads made of stone containing knowledge from times past. He also waiting for his god to return and the best way to welcome a god back with a ton of followers and what the best way to get followers? Exposure and development in his gods name. To me farum azula reflects a lot of tower of babble things is a tower literally destroyed in the sky and you see a lot of cultures there between the beast men, the god skins, the dragon cult, and the golden order. If you have the gold needle you bring another culture to it; the cult of rot, Alexander for the pot men, the volcano manor, crucible knights. This list goes on. Sorry for the long message and sorry if it’s difficult to read i am dyslexic hopefully I get the point across. Please poke holes in theory.

    Also could the memorial of elden John with him being covered? Consumed? By the erd tree roots be referring to him being trapped in there (you have to burn the erdtree to get to azula). It would make sense why we don’t see elden John statues in azula because he doesn’t need statues of himself in human form possibly a form of vanity his god would punish?

    Another great video! I like the idea of Ranni being yet further involved in a plot to subvert the Greater Will, because that means she’s more or less involved with all of the demigods directly as part of her schemes. She’s one of only top 3 favorite characters in Elden Ring in no small part due to her cunning and plots-within-plots. This does always make me have to question everything she says given her propensity for misleading and lying, which is why I still can’t decide if she’s genuinely sad at the deaths of Iji and Blaidd or feigning it since they both result as part of her grand scheme and she had no problem by moping of Selivus (though that’s not the same since he is a grade A skeeze-ball of bad dude). I will also say, vis a vis rot, I don’t think people are saying rot as a concept is bad, but that it’s unchecked spread is bad. In the same way death and predation aren’t bad but over hunting and genocide are bad since they are an imbalance of these forces and the nuking of Caelid isn’t really natural rot taking course and more of a war crime, if the Lands Between has a Geneva Convention.

  • @pedromenezes3917
    @pedromenezes3917 Жыл бұрын

    Ok you have awakened in me the urge to ramble about this game so here we go: Malenia's valkyrie symbolism has always puzzled me, but my main interpretation is that she takes upon the role of "bringer of death", even though valkyries in myth aren't exactly that. There are big themes of life and death in Malenia's story. As the Blade of Miquella, she deals death in order to defend something that would bring life anew to the world, the Haligtree and its order, taking on the role as the empyrean's shadow, LITTERALY the Wolf to Miquella's Kuro. And as the Goddess of Rot, she brings death so new life may rise from its remnants, creating a new cycle of decay and rebirth. Rot itself is seen as nothing but death, understandably so, its effects are horrifying to anyone that's not native to the scarlet order, and even to those born from it, as Millicent suffers before being given the needle. So Malenia not only defends her brother's dream from outside enemies, but she also defends it from herself. Malenia seems to have resigned herself to this role, and both her resignation and resolve are clear in dialogue and item descriptions, the first one that comes to mind is the line: "corpse after corpse, left in my wake". She sees herself as a necessary killer, so that her brother may save the world unimpeded. Some story elements from Sekiro might come in handy in this analysis, specifically the relationship Wolf, and by extension Malenia, has with karma and karmic debt, but i'd have to do more research on the subject. All that is to say, the image of a valkyrie bringing death to the battlefield with a stern look on her face is something that definitely evokes Malenia for me. I don't know if any of this made sense, i just love her story so much i cry. Btw im so freakin excited for the biology talk, there's so much to talk about in this game it's nuts, my biologist brain goes wild.

    I talk about malenia being miquellas shadow in another video :3 ! But the flowers would be HER perception of the self as they’re both empyrean so she would have a shadow too. She becomes the shadow of miquella - but also has a different construct for understanding herself

Regarding the Red Gold you mention, I haven't figured out what the actual language used for it in the eddas is but apparently the Red Gold, like of the foliage mentioned, is of great significance throughout the sources and serves as a metaphor for divine/arcane wisdom or something like that (more complex than this sounds I'm sure) in addition to literally being gold that is red.

    very nice video. i wonder if anyone has looked at the three sisters (ranni, malenia, and melina) in conjunction and figured out their triple symbolism or how their relationships to each other add to the game. like you started talking about freya and where the warriors go after death and my mind jumped to the tarnished as warriors after death (we were dead but extended grace), melina as odin (she leads us to the round table hold and later can sacrifice herself, along with a few other connections), malenia as freya (she receives half the warriors into her realm, she is a twin, miquella and malenia were creating a new world/order), and ranni as hel.

    As someone interested in history + cultures + art this was super awesome - esp your points about eastern philosophy, which is an area I have little experience in- tho I found it interesting that you considered Marika to link to Freya and loki? I always thought Marika felt far closer to Odin in terms of her whole deal- tho I know that Odin and loki have sometimes been considered as aspects of each other but I always felt Marika’s obsession with control and her decision to delve into the golden order felt v much like Odin collecting knowledge- as well as the hanging symbolism which ties into Odin hanging from the branches of Yggdrasil

    Probably not unless it's another Marika/Radagon situation. We don't know much about either of them but Malenia's teacher is referred to as male (at least in English), is skilled in martial arts but doesn't display any magical powers or much spirituality beyond the self (i.e. a lot of meditating but no worship) and of course we get his clothes. Renna is described as an old woman, a snow witch, fearful of the moon (Glintstone Icecrag) and of course we get her clothes, or an imitation thereof anyway. Honestly Malenia doesn't even look like she's "meditating" in the cutscene, more like muttering an apology or a quick one-liner as she does when we fight her. On an amusing side note Ranni narrates the scene and calls Radahn "conqueror of the stars" yet she and her posse _still_ never managed to draw the connection to her fate.

    It's funny I recently started looking into the Cailleach and immediately thought of the snow crone. How I got to the subject of her is a bit different though. I kept thinking about how the Carian demigods loosely resemble the children of Loki, but Radagon doesn't strike me as much of a Loki. Then I was thinking about the mother of his children Angrboda who is a jotun, has red hair, is heavily associated with wolves, and is considered the Mother of monsters. She lines up perfectly with Radagon and this made me realize that if you take the "b" out of Angrboda it uses the same letters as Radagon. After that I started looking into other mothers of monsters in other mythologies and found stories of the Cailleach.

    Finally someone talking seriously about Rena!! love it. Great insight here, lots of great connections. Looks like you are buildin and erdtree of knoledge here. You are keeping my interest for this game's lore very alive, thanks a lot :) I have a couple of notes that Im leaving here in hope it could help making the whole picture a little bit more clear. First a question: Following previous videos of yours, the image of the blue master and the red pupil, as in the water swrodsman and Malenia of the rot, if the choice of colours is then intended as in HP and FP, would the result of this union have something to be with purple then and all that it represents? Sorry if you have already talked about this particulary, as you said, its a lot!! Another thing I would like to poin out its about Freyja, Odin and the Valkiries. Valkiries in the Eddas are described as the ones who choose the chosen slains. From the etimology of the names, Valr, chosen slain, and kjosa, to choose (present in Val hall, the hall of the chosen slain). Its mentioned that a Valkyrie is born every time a person is born, which seems to represent the fate or destiny of the person. The chosen slain are the ones who wake up their valkyrie from her slumber, meaning, thorugh ilumination get to controll their own fate. I think this is relevant in the case of Malenia, Miquela, sleepness or slumber and fate. About Frejya, her name means "the lady" and she is also known as Valfreyja, the Lady of the Slain. This is why she is golden and radiant, as she can only be reached by spiritual ilumination. And I have to pick up on the technicality, Freyja is not Odins wife, this is Frigg. Freyja's husband is Odr, which is not the same character. Is true, Freyja and Frigg might come from the same deity in origin, but they where ultimately different beings. Frigg is more of a cosmic knoledge holder figure. My point here is that Frigg is Odins Valkyrie, as when he hungs from the tree he is able to grab the runes and control his own fate by pure wisdom, represented here by his marriage with Frigg. This sacred marriage thing has definitely a lot to do in Elden Ring in my eyes. And about Malenia and the Valkyries, I think they are actually conected here. Valkyries are represented as shield maidens, warriors, because a warrior's sword is, in almost every culture's myths, representing the tool that the hero uses to forge its own fate. The sword is his will and cuts through every obstacule. Malenia is The Sword of Miquela. 2 people that born at the same time, one in slumber, trying to adquire spiritual wisdom... I think Malenia might be Miquelas Valkyrie, his fate. Hope to be helpfull here with the bast amount of refferences in the game!! you are doing an incredible job, especialy making it so entertaining. And I love your Bloodborne streams aswell!! thanks a lot :)

And many scholars think Frigg and Freyja probably came from the same germanic figure (I mean their husbands are called Odin and Odr, suspicious). I'm not sure if you've covered this or not but I was just reading about the Idaean Dactyls. There are a ton of parallels to Elden Ring in their different iterations and are almost certainly the source of inspiration for the Fingers. But I was interested in the Dactyl Iasios in particular. Iasios/Iasion is a harvest figure. He sleeps with Demeter and is killed by Zeus for it. But it's okay because he comes back to life each year. Iasios is one of the many dying and rising gods we find throughout the ancient near east (Osiris, Dionysus, Jesus etc.) In some versions of the story he has a sister called Harmonia. Harmonia is married to Cadmus (a pre Herakles heroic figure) who becomes a serpent. She is distraught and the gods turn her into a serpent too. Perfectly logical, whomst among us wouldn't? Anyway, Harmonia's big story is that she was gifted a cursed necklace which brings misfortune to whoever owns it. The necklace has a long history of being passed down after Harmonia. There are just a ton of little parallels in this story with Miquella and Malenia if you squint a little. Miquella has many of the characteristics of a stereotypical dying and rising god. He has a sister who endures many misfortunes. The Dactyls are associated with the Great Mother figure Cybele/Rhea. Harmonia is associated with serpents which could be an analogy for rot. She's given a gift which turns out to be a curse. Lot going on here. Nothing quite lining up but once you consider the "blender" method of Miyazaki, you might find kernels of inspiration here and there.

Like with malenia I started with Valkyries to looking into spirituality with “3 blooms of a flower” A lot of what you wrote has shared symbolism that I got into in my “Elden John” and Elden history video! There's a LOT within the Renna and whatnot, and I think the snowy crone may be the same species/perhaps related? to the blue fairy, but I think that the blue fairy being the Siofra river (in that it literally just means fairy) is a very solid basis as well, in both Shinto mythology, as well as Irish, that rivers and such are alive as spirits. There is, also, a river in the mountaintops of Giants and the Consecrated Snowfield. I do not think we are ever given its name. The one thing I want to nitpick, however, is that I do not think Renna is necessarily the snowy crown. Renna Renna Renna Rennala why does Rennala have Renna in her name, why is Rennala not included in the three sisters? Why is Rennala so removed from the Carian Manor? Why is Renna there and not Rennala? Maybe it was just my assumption, but I always was with the idea that Renna is referring to Rennala. Speaking of which, why is Rennala so big? Rennala is known to have been in the mountaintops, witnessing the moon. Why is such a giant woman from the mountaintops of giants? Why is Radahn theorized as being part giant in an idea of Radagon's taking of the giant's curse from Marika, he has a mom just as large? I accidentaly took two adderall instead of one. Rennala feeels so unmentioned in Ranni's story, and yet she did raise Ranni, perhaps as her daughter perhaps from an egg, Rennala showed Ranni sorcery and the moons... would she be the one to show her the snowy crone?

    I think I’ve seen them as separate or two sides of the same. With Renna representing a primal embodiment of nature and Rennalla being a studious beautiful wizard who is more on the academic side of things. They could be the same! But they seem quite different! Mmm another way to put it: is that Renna and the themes of mist and ice and death evoke this image of the revenant spirit callers, the zamor, and the ice nature of the dark moon. The snowy hag is a deity in myth that seems to be a primordial ruler of nature itself. It seems like Rennala is more of an observer of her phenomenon, and if they are the same perhaps there’s 2 ways in which she likes to teach. 1) scholarly formal scientific understanding. 2) deep dark secret occult nature worship.

    Are there any marionettes other than the crude Liurnian war machines? If wings don't count there certainly don't seem to be any _other_ constructs or artificial lifeforms with one pair of extra arms specifically. Between Zullie and BonfireVN we have unclothed views of most of the relevant NPCs where Ranni and the marionettes seem to share one detail to the exclusion of the others: both pairs of arms attach at a single shoulder. However the marionettes have pronounced offsets with ball joints while Ranni kinda just has a tangle of rope which _may_ have come loose but would have looked more like a stuffed animal if it ever was pulled tight. Combined with the seemingly unique use of porcelain where the marionettes are wood and metal Ranni's body seems to be either a unique innovation or a high-status civilian version of a now unknown broader cultural practice. One important point we see in Zullie's second video is that Wraithcallers are closer to Grafted with their two stacked torsos so despite having similar bells the anatomy does _not_ line up for Renna having been a Wraithcaller of sorts herself.

  • @Etticos.

    @Etticos.

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Photoloss I believe the marionettes originate from Liurnia. The Avionette Soldier’s wings are actually second pair of arms holding wing shaped boards. The standard marionettes have four arms that wield daggers and crossbows. Yeah, I don’t think the wraithcallers have anything to do with Renna. That is a goofy theory in the first place.

  • @Photoloss

    @Photoloss

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Etticos. The wing question was aimed at Valiant Gargoyles, and to a lesser extent Misbegotten and other denizens. The Avionette and their balloon-bound compatriots share a very similar construction to the point it's hard to discern a broader established technology base let alone a "common practice" regarding the number of arms. For the specific purpose of disposable soldiers an extra pair of arms offers a profound advantage be it the Avionette wings, drawing a second bow or simply out-stabbing the fleshlings since marionettes seem to have no martial skill to fall back on. By contrast Ranni seems to be limited by magical energy and/or attention so she wouldn't benefit much in combat, and she doesn't really do any other physical work to the point she didn't seem to actually have a need for any arms at all until we gave her the Fingerslayer Blade.

    The Black Moon of Nokstella was destroyed and broken into shards (Memory Stone) so that's unlikely. However metaphorically speaking it is a very _similar_ moon and with all the "Age of Stars" stuff you could say the "spirit" of the moon lived on (as in the idea not a visible ghost) and what was destroyed was just a ball of space rock symbolising its cultural significance to the Nox. They could just as easily be different members of the same species though, just like all the Fallingstar Beasts and Astels are implied to be.

    20:45 If that's the case, you could research about the Logos; the definition Logos is pretty much what the Elden Ring is: The universal principle by which every event occurs, the very logic that governs the world. Apostle John also uses this concept, but he differs from Heraclithus' view , as John presents the Logos as a person: Jesus, the Word of God. Marika can also be considered as a personified Logos.

Not only does it look like it but It’s also closely related to the dead and being Fia wish’s to save and protect the dead maybe there’s something more too it. I don't think Renna is the witch, despite the online consensus. Naming convention is VERY important in Miyazaki games so Renna MUST be related to "Rennala" directly. That means the ice crone CAN'T be Renna considering her four arms and blue skin. I suspect the "I am the witch Renna" was a line reserved specifically for the player because Renna is Melina and Ranni's long lost twin sister. The Carian Filigreed Crest says directly there used to be multiple princesses of Raya Lucaria and since Rennala is the only Queen and founder then they must be her daughters. I suspect both Ranni and Renna encountered the frost witch and since Ranni had a talent for sorcery (Renna was more talented in miracles) she gave Renna the spectral steed torrent as a consolation prize for not teaching her. This is connected to the state we find Rennala in as Radagon was ordered to bring Renna back to the capital by the Greater Will and since he knew this would cause another war he twisted Rennala's mind (likely with the help of Seluvis).
