On Being Pilot in Command

Pilots are taught about aerodynamics, meteorology, aircraft systems & handling, regulations, airspace, etc, but they are not given much on how to be a good pilot in command. This is a recording of a seminar that focused on aspects of aeronautical decision-making (ADM) and acting as a pilot in command.

I don't remember the source, but this is still a favorite quote: "It is the mark of the superior pilot that he uses his superior judgement to prevent or avoid situations that require the exercise of his superior skills."

It's a great quote and holds true. I know it's in one of Dad's Proficient Pilot books, but I don't know if he's quoting someone or not. It would not surprise me to learn that those were his words.

EXELLENT TOPIC. This is such an important topic that the FAA has mandated that they train new captains to be mentors to first officers because of the crazy attrition and hiring. A lot of tribal knowledge is being lost every day as pilots retire, and new hires are upgrading to captain so quickly, they don't even know what they don't know.

So true. New first officers will only get to watch and learn for a pittance in time. I teach the Professionalism, Leadership and Mentorship for my airline.
