Marine pilots are used to operating bulk carriers as big as the Eiffel Tower lying on its side, bringing in $71 billion worth of trade through Newcastle Harbour each year. But it's on a man-made lake in the Hunter region where pilots can really test their skills. The Port Ash training facility is the only place in the Southern Hemisphere where pilots can practice their skills on a scaled-down model of a bustling harbour.
