Good review Lee and I agree with both you and Henning in that, for me, it’s not a flexible enough offering. When they offer a version that allows me to incorporate my own Rx and fpv gear and gives me options to configure it plus a true variable speed control then I may be interested.

An excellent review Painless [as usual]. This platform seems to do the basics fairly well. But I must echo the other comments regarding too proprietary firmware/hardware. I think a kit version would provide more flexibility [along with increased sales] giving consumers what they want. I hope OMP Hobby reads your feedback. Again. Excellent video.

Very interesting technology. I hope that lobby for VTOL planes will increase in the near future. RTF version seems to be very solid. VTOL is sensitive to handle and it’s good to have a solid stabilization system. I guess in manual mode, you could easily crash during the transition phase.

Fascinating. Any insight into what can be expected for flight times? Realize VTOL mode will be offer less flight time, but curious more for airplane mode, with minimal VTOL hovering. I have another question. I’m set up with the TBS Micro and the function checks seem good however there does not seem to be ant automatic self-leveling activity with the servos. Is that normal? On the bench without the blades, the 3 motors spin oh while in the hover mode. When I flip the switch to the fixed-wing mode, all 3 props stop. I thought the front motors would spin too but I guess they’re affected by a “below the threshold minimum altitude” setting in the FC.

Great review! I'm really interested in this plane but I do hope there'll be some improvements in the months to come. I noticed that when you RTH, the plane switches to hovermode and starts landing. Is there a mode where it will just loiter some 30 meters over the landing spot so you can manually take control of the landing whenever you feel like it? I didn't like it one bit that the thing just wanted to land itself in the trees and you had to take control in the last seconds to finetune it. I've heard the RTH altitude is set to 30 meters and can't be changed, is that right? Wouldn't be nice if it flew into a powerpylon on a RTH some miles away so I hope RTH altitude can be changed to 100 meters or so. Also, what's the range on that video and radio feed of the RTF version? I see it's a DJI videosystem and I've heard ranges anywhere from 500 meters to 12km's and I don't know what to think of it. I'm looking for something that will keep a solid link for at least 5 km as it has to replace my 4G modded Parrot Disco. Final question: do you think it's a good platform to take a bigger battery? The 60 min. claim is of course optimistic. I would like a battery that really does go for 60 min. though so I hope that's a possible mod. Thanks for the nice review and I really hope you can answer my question. I think it's a very interesting plane.

No settings on this model can be changed - by design. Sadly. 650 mins in FW cruise may be possible but the longer you stay in hover, the less you get in FW mode. Not sure about a heavier battery - There isn't a lot of space to move a heaver one about to maintain CG...

  • @LaBamba690

    @LaBamba690

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Painless360 You're absolutely right, it does depend on all those things. That is why I made sure to test in ideal conditions. First, I had the fully charged battery at about 75 degrees F so it wasn't cold. I used only 15 seconds to climb to 30 meters and immediately transitioned to fixed-wing mode. The weather was about 60 degrees with NO wind. I flew straight and level for about 1,000 meters, made a gentle turn back and repeated until it was nearing the critical battery warning threshold. I then flew it in a large circle overhead until it went into emergency landing mode. At the time it touched down, it had been flying for only 33 minutes. This was with the throttle held down at minimum for the whole fixed-wing time. I've also tried it while leaving the throttle centered for normal cruise speed and the flight time was shortened to less then 25 minutes. I have 3 batteries and the best one gave the 33 minute number while the other two are worse. From these tests, I'd have to say the Swan K1 is only able to meet 55% of its flight duration spec.

The little Arrows Viper is great out of the box but of you enlarge the manufacturer's cheat hole then you get a noticeable increase in performance. They are both 50mm fans but the Viper has loads more performance off the same 4S power. OMPHobby told me my RadiomasterTX16S transmitter is compatible with this aircraft however nothing was said about if it needed a separate receiver. The Radiomaster OpenTX has an "OMP" protocol to bind with but there are no bind procedures that cover this. There is a 4-pin SBUS on top but I can't find a pinout diagram anywhere or what commands the flight controller comes programmed with. I did not order the DJI FPV V1 controller. I have an extra transmitter from my DJI Inspire ver_1 but this did not seem to work either. Can you recommend a solution? 2. I have the DJI FPV Goggles v2 but they will not bind with the DJI FPV Xmtr-Camera that I selected in the options purchase list. The RED steady light on the transmitter remains illuminated after pushing and the goggles will continuously beep when I push it's bind button. Recommendation??

Update so far the new models you will be able to control the throttle, I talk to the pilot rep at home and I let him know you issues, he said manual mode was removed but they may install the software for manual mode, and activate sbus for crossfire, I said only sbus and he said yes. No crossfire protocol, only sbus. And wait for the next beast that is coming. LOL

I think the manufacturers of these are hampered in that they are having to make it useable for a flyer that potentially has never flown anything like this. Anyone that feels they want something more tinkerable - just build one yourself with Arduplane and any of the available airframes made for this, theres a few available, use your own choice of RX, controller etc.

I think that they’ve adopted the DJI approach of ‘buy and fly’, the trouble is that they haven’t included enough user options for even those type of users and in doing it this way they have closed the door on a lot of users who would otherwise buy into it. I build the vast majority of my planes (mainly balsa) but would still be interested in this if it wasn’t so proprietary. It feels to me as if they are putting this out into the market more as a test bed prior to releasing a more fully featured version.

Im the same I build my FPV planes from balsa. I find they come out a lot lighter because you can build to spec. Like it doesnt need to do loops etc.

Bought one and it does fly okay (if you ignore some bugs ^^) Unfortunately, OMPHobby support does ignore your requests and they do not provide any documentation/manual beyond 2 pages included in the packet and some external youtube videos. I expected more for a 1600$ product ...

The original verison isn't designed to be changed in any way, sadly. The PRO version seems more versatile. The original version is designed for a DJI Air Unit so is expecting SBUS input for control... Best of luck

Max distance is limited by the range of the DJI Air Unit power wetting. Most take 4km as the max distance from the goggles to the model on max power.

Lets look at the version you can buy without the DJI Air unit. It's about £660, and for that you get the airframe with motors, ESCs, Servos, flight controller, box, battery, charger. I challenge anyone to build a DIY version of something similar for £660. I think, for someone who fancies this kind of aircraft, it's not at all "expensive" comparably speaking. The only pain I can think of would be the flight controller being so locked down, I'd like to be able to configure the OSD to my liking, have more control over the throttle, connect up a crossfire receiver, and put my own FPV gear into it. I do actually currently fly on DJI but I have a spare Air Unit already. But I'd like the ability to plug in an air unit AND a crossfire receiver and not be locked into using the air unit as my control link. Even still, considering how much a regular FPV plane would cost, fully built and in the air... this isn't too pricey considering

I may be wrong but from what I've seen the flight controller is fairly locked down so limits its use.

Looks nice but you outlined points others didn't. Having it locked down makes it a bit of a tough sell. In this hobby, stuff breaks and we should be able to replace with anything we want.

While the price is higher than most would like to see, this seems like an “Apple” version of a VTOL offering. It looks great, it works really well but you have to understand that you aren’t changing anything. I think most people in this hobby are more “Android” folks where it’s cheaper, more janky but you can make it your own. That being said, for a complete model with a good autopilot, air unit, gps, compass, esc, etc…you would be looking at spending at least $500 to make it yourself.

The inability to change anything is a poor choice by manufacturer. Should offer two versions, this one and a configurable one with a option for different controller and RX.

How OMP makes a FPV plane with a flight controller without an optional bidirectional serial port for elrs/crsf receivers is beyond me. I hate how proprietary they make their stuff, it’s not helping anyone with them doing this. I canceled my order because I couldn’t get a clear answer on if I could use my crsf, and the price is just to high for something that gives me apple vibes.

Just too much money for a foamie for mine. You are close to an Air 2S on price which is VTOL, has a better camera and is more portable. However a RTH which is 10m off is appalling - the very reason you want VTOL is because you don't have 10m. I get that you can take control on the decent to correct but for that money you shouldn't have to - you don't have to with an Air 2S.
