My late father owned a Platters album, and he played that cassette frequently when we were children. Hearing this takes me back to those times, and it's only in recent years that I came to understand his admiration for these singers with their astounding voices. The voices I hear in today's charts can't quite compare.

Back to the 1950s and 1960s different time and different place, much simpler time, a much more innocent time. School "sock hops" so called because they were held in the schools gym and you had to take your shoes off (so not to harm the floor). The music switched back and forth between rock and roll and slow music. Slow dancing an acceptable way to hold your girl close. I am in my 70s and this type of music take me back to win I was 16.

They came to a music festival in my small town in the province of Québec early 90s. My dad had never attended the festival since the beginning in the 70s. When he learned they would be coming, he said "I'm going".He actually cried, it was the music he listened to as a teen. They weren't all the original members but some were and they sounded exactly like that. REALLY proud to say I saw these legends live.

This was the mid-50's where music was transitioning from Big Band and Swing thru folk/pop with smaller groups like the Platters and into the beginnings of 'Rock & Roll' which got cranked up just a few years later in the late 50's. And yes, Mel there was no electronic enhancement at all back then. It was all voices. The only thing electronic at that time were the guitars , and they were still fairly new. I'm really looking forward to when you two get into the 'Folk' and 'Folk/Rock' genres. I think you'll enjoy those too. Top 6 groups for that music was The Brothers Four, The Highwaymen, The Irish Rovers, Simon and Garfunkel, and last but probably the best - Peter, Paul and Mary and the Mamas and the Papas. They cover the genre from the mid-50's thru the 60s and into the 70's. You both Take Care.

Our people, unless they were musicians, or singers, never heard of these people. I grew up singing... Gospel, Rhythm and Blues, Ballads, Standards, and Jazz. I met some, and knew some of the enterta- iners back then, Sam Cooke, Johnny Taylor...(there were 2 Johnny Taylors, most didn't know that... they sounded a little alike, they call One ''Little Johnnie Taylor'')~Sarah Vaughn, Smokey Robinson, Johnny Mathis, opened for the Ike and Tina Turner Review, 1968, ''HOLLYWOOD''.. Ray Charles, etc:.. We had so many wonderful Groups then, forging their Ways to the World. We were simple people, and the world was a happier place. We lived in ''WATTS''...California!~

Thank you so much for sharing your feelings about this music. The Platters are so revered. Their music lives and has a lasting place in history, and this particular song is a classic that has been covered by so many great singers. It was actually written by composer Jerome Kern for a Broadway play in the early 1930s. It has been sung by Irene Dunne, Kathryn Grayson, recorded by several Big Band orchestras (incl. Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.) Harry Belafonte and the wonderful Nat King Cole recorded it, as did my very favorite female jazz singer, Dinah Washington. The Platters' version certainly clings in the memories of those of us who grew up in that era! Absolutely beautiful. My dear mom loved this song, too.

LOL! Yeah...this was pre-computer audio enhancement. The computers in that age were vacuum-tube computers that took up entire rooms and were used to work out missile trajectories. This is what true greatness sounded like. MY test for how good a singer/group truly is consists of a very simple thing: Without lip-syncing to a track, singing live, do they sound 'just that awesome.'? If the answer is yes, they're truly talented. Older music couldn't waste time with groups that didn't really 'have it' and make money, so you had a really high bar set for success in the industry. And you had groups/artist like... Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, The Platters, The Drifters, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Louis Armstrong, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc..... Truly amazing music that a lot of our younger generation has never heard....until now, thanks to reactors like you two and the many others who are bringing back the appreciation of a generation of truly great artists who deserve the accolades. Thank you both for what you do, and please keep up the awesome work!

My late mother did the album cover art for a 12" LP called "Remember These" and one of the songs I loved was 'You're the One' by the Vogues. Listen and react to that one please.

I remember in high school doing a skit performance of a group of singers sitting around a fake campfire singing this song. No where near as gorgeous as the original but fun, anyway! Memories in the past, so precious. Done acapella too.

You still haven't heard Johnny Mathis do "Chances Are", "Misty" or "Wonderful Wonderful". You still haven't heard Sam Cooke do "You Send Me", "Cupid" or "Only Sixteen" You guys are just scratching the surface.

Oh I love the Platters . Is there a vocal group who ever evoked so much emotion, so much SOUL?? I dont think so. Such absolutely beautiful. I am guessing you are on a 1958 roll today.

Giving credit where credit is due, the song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” predates the Platters by about 25 years. It was written by Jerome Kern (music) and Otto Harbach (lyrics) for the Broadway musical “Roberta,” which opened in New York in 1933. You can hear Tamara Drasin, who sang the song in the original Broadway production, here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/do2qu9FxlKrJeKw.html

Awesome song…love it ❤️ This is proper music, not like most the bland churned out rubbish we get today. True talent, brilliant songwriting, and wonderful voices that don’t need auto tune and all that technical correction.

As you can probably tell by now, they knew how to sing back then. So many great singers. Just glad I grew up with it.

All we can hope for, is a new generation will discover real honest singers from the past and start a new wave of singers who refuse auto tune and polish their own real talent.

Lead singer, Tony Williams, had such a beautiful voice! The Platters were one of the outstanding groups of the 1950's and they had many hit records.

Welcome to the music we grew up on! It was pretty amazing, indeed. I remember singing this in the shower when I was in elementary school, and I tried so hard to sing just like The Platters lead singer sang - and I was a little white girl! Haha! Even though it means we are old now (64), I’m glad we had such great music to listen to growing up. Y’all are so precious! And your voice is beautiful, by the way, too, Mel !!
