Music like this is priceless. You will never hear any music as great as this kind/style/type/genre ever again. Songs, lyrics, melodies like this are from an era gone by. Unlike today this was when musicians played and singers actually sang, no autotune and The Platters are fantastic.

Just a note on the term "priceless" in regards to music. If we (the world) had never heard the song before and it came out today, it would still seem groundbreaking. This song does just that. It IS priceless.

After more than 60 years, we remember the great stuff and forget the dross. Time is a great filter. I'm pretty sure that in 60 years time there will be folks saying there will never be music as good as the 2020s. Of course, we don't know which songs that will be, any more than folks in the 50s knew it would be The Platters cover of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" we remember, and not Charlie Drake's cover of "Splish Splash".

That's so amazing because they were so critical to that era! I'm a Gen Xer, and an old soul lol This was my parents' music, but whenever my Dad would put on those old LPs of crooners like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, The Mills Brothers, The Platters, etc., on the record player, you could hear the crackling of the needle as the songs would play out... oh it was just one of the most magical times of my childhood. 🥰

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" was recorded in 1958 by The Platters. Written by American musical theatre composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” was first introduced by singer and actress Tamara Drasin in the 1933 musical Roberta. When the smoke gets in your eyes you tear up. It is a metaphor for when you fall in love and then break up.

Kern first wrote the tune for "Showboat" (1927). They didn't use it. Then he wrote a marching version for something else, they didn't use that either. Finally, with Harbach's lyrics, it was used in the Roberta musical, as the O.P. said. That in turn was made into a film with Irene Dunne in 1935. Clip below. It's been recorded by a ton of artists. But the Platters version kind of eclipses everything else. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGil18iNgtm8ado.html

Lyrics, “When your hearts on fire…smoke gets in your eyes.” And earlier, “All who love are blind,” The fire of love will blind from the smoke that follows a love (fire) that dies. He thought his love was too strong until it was “blown away” and he was now “without my love.” When his friends laugh and deride him he finally realizes the truth that when that lovely flame dies it produces smoke that bring tears to the eyes. That seems to fit!

A group I liked from 50's/60's was The Browns. Jim Ed Brown started the group and was soon joined by his sister, Maxine. Their sister, Bonnie joined after graduating high school. Being siblings, their harmony was superb. My favorite by them was "The Old Lamplighter". They had many, including "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On", "Three Bells" and a faster paced, light-hearted song called "I Was Looking Back To See (If You Were Looking Back To See).

I love these original Platters! Tony Williams had one of the best voices ever. Been a fan since I was young (69 now). I used to know the other band members names but have forgotten them. Though, if I remember correctly, the woman is Zola Taylor and the deep voiced guy is Herb something. As for their music, pick any of their songs and you can’t go wrong.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for the 1933 musical Roberta, later the 1935 movie with Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Irene Dunn and Randolph Scott by the same name.

Tony Williams (lead) was discovered by Buck Ram (manager of the Platters, Drifters and Coasters) singing opera in a recording studio, and was subsequently put in the group at that point. He retired from the group, I believe, in 1961, because he thought his voice was no longer pure enough 🤦‍♂️. The Platters laid down many great original songs along with a plethora of covers of old standards, but to really hear the man whom many considered to have had the purest voice in the 50's, you really should listen to My Prayer and a lesser known song, Trees. Only then will you understand just how all consuming Tony's voice truly was.

This was one of my parents's favorite groups. Another favorite of theirs was The Mills Brothers. Their song "Till Then" was from the 40s but they re-recorded it in the 50s and I think that's the version that was one of my parents's songs. Here's a nice live performance: "Till Then": kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5hr2dSraa27fso.html Here's a singer for Female Friday, Amber. Her name is Nancy Wilson. One of my Dad's favorite songs to do a slow jitterbug to was a Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer song from 1953 called "Satin Doll". Ella Fitzgerald, The Coasters, and so many others covered it including Nancy Wilson. Dad loved her and this was a version from the early 60s that he adored: "Satin Doll": kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIRn1aSDnbHFZ5c.html

There were a lot of instrumental hits in the 50s and early 60s. One of my all time favorites was the amazingly gorgeous "Wonderland by Night", featuring Bert Kaempfert on trumpet with a chorus of background singers and a trombone section just oozing with warm, mellow tones that flow like honey on a hot biscuit! Check it out. You'll love it. And two more instrumental hits from that era that you shouldn't miss are (1) the romantically dreamy "Stranger on the Shore" by Mr. Acker Bilk on clarinet and (2) "Sleepwalk" featuring the sleepy sounds of a summer breeze on an island paradise by brothers Santo & Johnny on steel guitar and electric 6-string guitar.
