One of the music industry's great tragedies... they hit it big right after lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose at age 28 (and the band called it quits immediately thereafter). "What I Got" was their first huge airplay hit, followed immediately by "Santeria", "Wrong Way" and "Doin' Time". However, if you do another Sublime song, it has to be "Badfish". It has a cool, smooth, reggae vibe that will make you want to kick back on the beach!

While the band was really over, without Bradley, they really did not call it quits. There was the Long Beach Dub All Stars which had the surviving members plus a others who guested on Sublime tracks. There was also Long Beach short Bus aka Shortbus. Currently (before the pandemic)they still toured with a new singer. Called Sublime with Rome. But it will never be what they were originally.

It blows my fucking mind how many people today have never even heard of Sublime. They were such a legendary group. They were _huge_ in their day, and their lyrics are extremely real and relatable to a lot of people, back then and today both. It’s even more mindblowing because everyone I’ve seen react to it loves it and is always smiling by the end. So it still vibes with people, obviously. It’s so weird that they aren’t a household name.
Bradley had the rare talent of being able to find the best in all genres of music, bring them together, and weave them, effortlessly. A true talent. Ska, alternative, rock, rap, hip hop, soul, he could do them all. Miss you, Bradley. Sublime was a BIG Gen X group. We remember.
There will never be a band like Sublime ever again.... Bradley was a amazing song writer, guitarist, he had it all !

Been waitin’ on the Sublime discovery. The reason the sound is hard to describe is because it’s distinctly their own. There are influences of rock, reggae, ska, pop, rap, punk, blues, Cali surf, and Spanish language music. I consider the death of Bradley Nowell to be one of great losses in music. I feel like they had so much more to say.

Not gonna lie, when it got to the part with Lou dog I actually teared up. There was definitely some more left in the tank, and it hit me that not just the people who were around don't get to experience it, but for everyone who comes along and discovers the band for the first time, they don't get to see where this thing would have gone either, and that's a real f%^&*(@ shame.

You will be a huge Sublime fan. This guy died before we really knew him. His songs are his legacy.
This was my highschool music, and I tried to live my life in way
Doing Time, Smoke Two Joints, April 29th 1992, Badfish, Caress Me Down, Garden Grove, and KRS-ONE are all awesome. Also, their song Saw Red features Gwen Stefani. Don't Push is another good one. Bradley Nowel was the lead sing and he died a couple of months before their breakthrough album released.
The self titled album is completely underrated. One of the best albums ever. Bradley literally made an album where it was impossible to press skip on any song. It was an album which you could listen to it all the way through and not find a bad song. My favorite band ever. They're simply underrated and what their band name is all about, SUBLIME. They were a band that literally played almost every genre from hip hop all the way to dance hall, punk rock, reggae, ska, and thrash.

It's a mixed bag because almost none of the material is original. Most are one of the following, a cover, a cover of the lyrics over sublime music or over lengthy samples. I like the band but they are more cut and past than original material.

@Stacey Capito would Sublime be considered Ska? I thought Ska distinctly required the use brass horns most notably trumpets. I remember them getting categorized as hip -hop and sometimes rap/rock. Interesting.
@scapito

@@donaldjohnson1148 I don't think Ska requires horns, but they are sometimes included. I think of Ska as a sub genre of calypso/reggae with a rock beat. Thanks for this one! Sublime was LA. A mix of hardcore punk, reggae, ska, hip-hop, and mexican ballads. For something hard, try "New Thrash" or "Ebin", for something groovy try Doin' Time. Bradley, the singer, died of a heroin overdose. Their music IS the 90s for me. Personal. Fave 5446
Love so many of their songs!
Their song Santeria is real fire! Sweet bass reggae bass line with Long Beach, CA flare. Also Garden Grove is a perfect one to add on the reaction list. The official music video for that song really shows the culture of people in the neighborhood in California 💗
I met this band because of a song called "Caress me down" and during the song they talk about my country Costa Rica when they were here surfing and drinking alcohol, they stayed In my town in a very central hotel, and all the people here always talk about it, we are honored that those from "sublime" talk about their time here.
