This video is based on a great Marilyn Monroe movie called, “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” - definitely worth a watch! The song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” is basically the same set, choreography & dress as In this Madonna video. So, there is a lot of old Hollywood movie/ storyline behind this song/video. In the video, Madonna’s movie character is materialistic, but as she shows at the end, that isn’t her. I’ve heard an interview where she said she hates being referred to as “the material girl” - she’s never been able to shake the nickname due to this famous video/song!

“Papa Don’t Preach”, “Like a Virgin”, “Crazy for You”, “La Isla Bonita”, “Into the Groove”, Borderline”…which is my personal favorite. She has so many great songs❤️🔥

FYI the moment Madonna's voice changed for us all was "Live To Tell". She had made it big - HUGE - by then and she invested in herself by taking voice lessons and really learning to sing. Prior to that she kind of had a Minnie Mouse voice - high and nasal. But if you learn nothing about Madonna, know this - she constantly took what she had and made the most of it. Her dancing, her singing, her ambition - she invested in making it all and just making it. Genuine superstar and one of the hardest working women in music - all time!

Her nasal voice came from them speeding up her vocals for her first two albums.. people started to notice her real voice when she sang live.. yeah it was a little nasally and irritating "Minnie Mouse on Helium" as one critic called her voice.. You were so right.. after the Virgin Tour, Madonna wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and so took voice lessons which showed in "True Blue" (and allowed her to dip into her lower register for "Live to Tell"which her manager begged her NOT to release as a single), and later with "Like a Prayer".. she took further voice lessons because she really, really REALLY wanted to be Evita in the movie adaptation but everyone looked at her and laughed... well, she didn't give up.. she pursued it for more than 15 years and she finally, FINALLY got to play Evita on the big screen.. And those vocals shone through that movie and later in "Ray of Light".. okay.. I'm blathering.. sorry..

I have her "Live To Tell" on a 45! I felt that song was her real voice...and it was beautiful.

"La Isla Bonita" is my favorite Madonna song. Found out the other day it was originally written to be done by MJ but he passed on it. Can't imagine his voice doing it she was destined for it.

God, this was SUCH an iconic moment in music. Girls all started wearing lace, and gloves, and lace gloves. This whole album was so huge. It was MJ and Madonna. Moonwalking virgins, we were. Madonna will never have an equal.

That didn't seem to hurt her image in the eyes of millions of adolescent girls, though. Its not really about the voice. She had the crackest marketing team on Earth.

Almost 40 years later and she's still known as The Material Girl. It's hard to explain to people who didn't live through the 80s but there were two universally known pop stars.... Michael Jackson and Madonna. There were other acts like Prince who were huge international stars, but those two were in their own stratosphere. Madonna started fashion trends and empowered women around the world.

This was from 1984 off the Like A Virgin album - her second album and it was such a scandal at the time bc of the lyrics BUT you see at the end that she falls for the humble approach - it's a very tongue in cheek song that she had fun with ❤️

If you really want a different Madonna sound listen to Live To Tell! That song is haunting....and I think really captures her vocals.

Madonna is the queen of reinventing herself with pretty much every song and project.

"Papa Don't Preach" was another huge hit for her in the 80's where she had that iconic higher range..Great song with a great message.

Madonna's voice in the 80's is different than anything in the 90's and after. She took vocal lessons for her movie Evita and you can hear the difference in her music.

As a guy born in 1980, whose parents loved both Madonna and Michael Jackson, I grew up on the music of both those artists. Early Madonna had a Betty Boop kinda thing going on with her voice and as time went on, she learned how to utilize more and more of her vocal range and ability, which is why later songs showcase more of her vocals. But THIS song is so iconic and synonymous with Madonna that one of her many nicknames IS The Material Girl. This is arguably the most famous song she did in the 80s.

When I was a kid/teen it didn't matter what type of music you listened to everyone liked Michael Jackson and Madonna!

This is an homage to Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" from the movie "Gentleman Prefer Blondes." The original version was on Broadway, starring Carol Channing.

Madonna has a very deep catalog of music. She is iconis and puts on an amazing stage show.

For artists of which I am a big fan, I can find 7 songs I really like in 1 or 2 studio albums. So, no I don't think of myself as a big fan of hers. But it's clear she does have many big fans.

First as others mentioned her performance with the men is a wonderful homage to Marilyn Monroe’s iconic performance of Diamonds are girl’s best friend from Gentlemen prefer blonds. Marilyn played a very sweet gold digger. This song came out at the height of 80’s Greed is Good materialism. It’s meant to be an anti materialistic message. The song was a huge hit! Madonna became known as the Material Girl after this and didn’t like it because she thought people missed the message. Love early Madonna ! So many great songs.

Congrats! You are the first person in here who understands sarcasm. The whole point of this song was to throw shade at the over the top materialism at that time, and all the greedy gold diggers that followed. Sarcasm is an lost art these days it seems. The video alone should be enough to understand the meaning of this song.

Her voice was higher in her earlier years! As she mature it changed!! I loved her earlier songs!

Bedtime Story is ... on another level. One of my top 3 fave Madonna videos. But you can never go wrong with her debut LP.

Her first hit, in 1983, was "Holiday". This was followed by "Lucky Star", "Borderline", and perhaps her best known song, "Like a Virgin". By 1985, millions of preteen girls were dressing like her! And the hits just kept on coming... "Crazy For You", "Angel", "Into the Groove", "Dress You Up", "Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach"... the list goes on and on. She was also in quite a few movies, perhaps most notably, "A League of Their Own", a Tom Hanks movie you simply MUST check out!

i used to dress like madonna during this time. check out 'angel', 'la isla bonita', 'into the groove', 'who's that girl'. she dominated the 80s!! we had so many artists that did amazing in the 80s.

This song is so iconic to me, it instantly takes me back to being a tween. Madonna has so many sides to her, she just can't be pinned down to one sound. You have so far to go with her amazing catalog, and I'm here for it!!

Madonna has some great ballads, too. “Crazy For You”, “Live To Tell” and “Take A Bow” are classics.

Madonna was a dope pop artists during the 80s and '90s. Hot chick too lol. Many of us had a crush on her as kids/teens back then. We all crushed on Janet Jackson, too. lol

This song is totally 80s. It was the "greed is good" decade. I was in college back then - really enjoyed watching her videos on MTV. One of my favorite videos of hers from the 80s is "Open Your Heart". You guys would love it!

I'd recommend "Crazy for You", "Live to Tell", "Rain", "Open Your Heart", and "Into the Groove" as some songs that were big hits, but aren't as iconic as some of her other songs. Crazy for You is my favorite Madonna song - it's a beautiful love song that she sings wonderfully! Madonna was one of the true icons of the 80's (with hits into the 90's, but I'm talking about defining a decade). She was one of the first, along with MJ, to take full advantage of the power of MTV at that time, and define (and redefine) herself through the videos she put out. This was her "Material Girl" phase, and it (and "Like a Virgin") launched her as a megastar. Her later songs were completely different, from this and from each other. There's no doubt that she captivated the popular audience for well over a decade, and still resonates with fans today. That's a hell of a career!

I would say Into the Groove is one of her most iconic hits, definitely in the top 5. The others I agree with, especially Live To Tell.

Madonna's music videos were like mini-movies, telling stories from start to finish in under 5 minutes. Papa Don't Preach, Express Yourself, Oh Father, Bad Girl, The Power of Goodbye, etc. have such cinematic qualities that they really are the gold standard of music videos. Material Girl is a cute pop confection enhanced and elevated by its accompanying music video.

Madonna delivers so many personas. This was pure 1980s materialism. I loved her early songs Burning Up, Borderline, and Lucky Star. Live to Tell and La Isla Bonita are the two in which I most enjoy her voice.

When Madonna was writing the songs for this album (Like A Virgin) she'd had three hits but was by no means a superstar yet. That's why she has a tongue in cheek golddigger vibe to this song. But once this album had been out for a year she was a bona fide superstar and she hasn't looked back.

Amber and J, Keep this in mind in the 1980s we had an economic surge also known as the age of decadence. Parties, cocaine in abundance and people charged everything on credit cards for the first time… the Reagan Years 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. I believe she wrote the song to reflect our culture of the time.

Her song Oh Father is one of her most haunting songs if you want to see yet another side of her. You mentioned how different this is from everything: that's her thing. Madonna is known as the Queen of Reinvention (David Bowie being known as the king, no coincidence that he is her chief influence), every album she releases it's an entirely different look, sound, genre, and aesthetic. Everything she does is different, she never repeats herself.

“Lucky Star”, “Borderline”, “Holiday”, “Into the Groove”. These are the bangers.

One of my favorite Madonna songs is the not very well known “Beautiful Stranger” from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Amber will absolutely love it because it has a very ‘60’s vibe and tons of instruments, including a flute solo.

She was an actress playing a 'material girl'. At the beginning of the video, she was in the dressing room on the phone to a girlfriend talking about how some guy thinks he can buy her with expensive things. She wasn't impressed. The 'director' in the video gave her flowers after she'd finished filming and took her on a date in his truck. She was after a man who could give her the things that money can't buy. ❤

I was a kid when she first hit it big and there were so many girls dressing up like her in her “Lucky Star” video! Now I feel old! 😂

Madonna was in her artistic prime in the ‘90s. Ray of Light (‘98) is one the best pop albums ever recorded (even better than her outstanding ‘89 release, Like a Prayer). Check out masterpieces “Rain,” “Take a Bow,” “Ray of Light” and “Frozen.” The songs are incredible and the videos are visually stunning. If you want something smokin’ hot, take a look at “Justify My Love,” “Erotica” and “Human Nature.” 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor is Madonna’s third best album and also top-notch with “Hung Up,” “Sorry” and “Jump.” Enjoy!

"Who's That Girl" is one of her underrated songs. Cheesy movie starring her too. LOL

What I love best about this and every video of Madonna is her intricate and beautiful choreography.

This song is very tongue-in-cheek and the thing is, for a while in the 1980's, they called her the "Material Girl." Madonna is a true chameleon, she's always evolving and changing her style. You should also check out her songs from the 80s like "Like A Virgin," "La Isla Bonita," "Open Your Heart," and "Express Yourself." In the 90s, you got "Frozen," "Ray Of Light," "Justify My Love" and "Beautiful Stranger." Her career is just a trip, to many fans, she is the "Queen of Pop."

Yes, a lot of people didn't get the joke and thought she was being serious. She's playing a character in the song and the video and it's very clever and winking.

Madonna's voice wasn't that much higher when she was younger. She had worked as a dancer and a drummer but she was not a trained singer, and she had trouble singing on the right keys for the songs that were written for her, and I think the producer of her first two albums also said he had trouble with her voice warbling. So he recorded her vocals and then sped them up slightly, which raised the pitch and also made her sound a little bit like a cartoon chipmunk. You could look at this as a credit to Madonna because she was regarded as a flash in the pan early in her career and most people thought she would come and go, but Madonna worked hard to improve her singing ability and she kept out-creating what for most people is a sudden dead-end to a pop career by surprising and taking on new personas and being so inventive with her music videos and press appearances. She also has always hated being called "the material girl" and I think she has said that she regrets having recorded this song even though it was one of her first major hits because she has always been associated with it. From Wikipedia: "During a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna was asked by interviewer Austin Scaggs, regarding her first feelings, after listening to the demos of "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl." Madonna responded by saying, "I liked them both because they were ironic and provocative at the same time but also unlike me. I am not a materialistic person, and I certainly wasn't a virgin, and, by the way, how can you be like a virgin? I liked the play on words, I thought they were clever. They're so geeky, they're cool."

I grew up at the time of the release. I remember being enamored with her but listening to it now the song from a technical and content stand point is not good. Her singing is bad, the music isn't great, so I can understand her distain for the song. This is the music business crap where they create pop star, by writing the lyrics and melody and design her look. I'm impressed that after the her success she broke free and reinvented her true self. As a teen I never realized this.

Madonna was/is the Queen of reinventing herself. She was changed her sound and look for every album. Everyone always lived to see what she would bring next.

Madonna has had so many good songs, seemingly reinventing herself each decade. Her earlier pop songs are fun and catchy, but my favorites are “Live To Tell” and both absolutely incredible hits from Evita, “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and “You Must Love Me” which won an Oscar and really show her true vocal talent.

Oooh my goodness, you must hear Madonna's "Deeper and Deeper". Dancing in front of people is not something I relish, but when "Deeper and Deeper" comes on, no matter where I am or who's watching, I WILL dance. Also the official video has a LOT going on. Absolutely amazing.

She got the idea because she was a Marilyn Monroe fan. Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend is the Marilyn Monroe song from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. A great movie with Marilyn and also starring Jane Russell. Y'all should check it out!

All great Madonna hits and when she started the register of her voice was much higher, I particularly loved how early hits especially: Borderline Holiday Dress you up and many more I loved the movie “Desperately seeking Susan” it has mixed reviews but, I think you would love it Amber!

I remember as a teen seeing Madonna perform on American Bandstand. When Dick Clark asked her what her future goals were, Madonna replied “Rule the World”… I think she’s done just that…

Vintage Madonna, before her brain melted

One of her first hits was “Crazy for You”, a very slow song and a much later hit was “Don’t Tell Me”. Both are very different than anything you’ve heard from her before. And both are excellent songs. She really does reinvent herself over and over.

This was released in 1984/5 and, yes, her voice was much higher at the start of her career. Madonna always cited Material Girl as her least favourite of all her songs, although she seems to have reclaimed it over the past decade and performed it on her last tour. The "materialistic" lyrics are a bit cringeworthy but I love that she undermines them in the video with the big star being won over by the handpicked flowers and the rundown truck. Very clever.

Madonna changed so many times throughout the years...she is a master at reinventing herself for the time.

Madonna has the uncanny ability to transform herself into almost anything she chooses at any given time - kind of like David Bowie did. My favorite Madonna song is one a lot of people don't think of when naming her songs - "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". It was on her "Like A Virgin" album, but she also put it on her 3rd album & released it as a single then. I think it really showcases her voice & has that 70's soul feel to it.

I love her version also. However, Love Don't Live Here Anymore is not her song. She was not the writer or the first person t0 record it. It was Rose Royce who wrote and recorded it in 1978. You should check it out.

Madonna has said many times how she hates being called "the material girl" & reminds us that this is one song that she herself did not write, yes she has a lot of money but she has also said that money is not important to her & was never her motivation, her new 50 number 1 dance hits compilation album coming out soon is called "finally enough love" this is what she was always looking for, she is from a big family her mother died when she was 5 & she herself has 6 children, being a BIG fan of hers there are just too many songs of hers i'd love to see you guys react too, she has many amazing songs, but the "the power of goodbye" "time stood still" "you'll see" & "live to tell" (ballads) are imo where she excels as a songwriter & emotionally captivating singer, i really hope you guys get to these amazing songs at some point.

Michael and Madonna set the tone of the early 80’s there were no stars brighter. You could never write a history of the eighties without these two setting the soundtrack on it’s course.

There aren't any clips from Desperately Seeking Susan in this video. "Into The Groove" absolutely does. Maybe "Crazy For You" does too but I'm not positive. Not this one though.

This is quintessential 80s icon MADONNA! Then she went into the '90s and out did herself with even more hits. The video definitely was inspired by the Marilyn Monroe 60s. She is a material girl she's worth $850 million 🤫

...the high pitch in her voice was part of her charm particularily in her debut years. she spoke openly and childlike. ...her petite size also attributed. VERY charming

"Material Girl" was Madonna's 5th charting single, the 4th to reach the Top 10, peaking @ #2 for 2 weeks in 1985. Released after "Like a Virgin" (corrected my typo of "Prayer" instead of "Virgin") and before "Crazy For You"-- both of which reached #1. [Edit: BTW, the record that thwarted the ascent of "Material Girl" to #1: "One More Night" - Phil Collins]

Never was a big fan of Madonna, but this one caught me "back in the day". Over the years I've dipped in and found others - 'If I could melt your heart', 'Hung Up', 'How High' and one of my favourite sounds/songs of all time (just addictive, you want to play it over and over) Ray of Light.

She was definitely all pop when she came on the scene... Holiday, Lucky Star,Borderline, Like a Virgin.

I remember it a just a fun Madonna song, rather than any king of social statement, and Marilyn Munroe was still remembered fondly and I think that she kind of inspired it

At the end of the lyrics, she explains that now she is rich the world is after her. She’s made it, but now she has to deal with people digging at her money instead. 😊

Madonna's sense of humor has been very underrated and it's great

Our voices, like most body parts, are fresh when we are younger and change over time with use, especially people who use their voices for work, ie., singers, sportscasters, teachers, etc. She was in her mid-20s when she sang this and was 32ish when she recorded Vogue with a lot of touring and a couple of new albums in between. Lots of vocal cord use.

THE song that gave her the "Material Girl" moniker for the rest of her life. The one negative side effect of this hit...because she hated being called that.

The reason Madonna's voice sound so high it's because she was twenty-five years old when she shot this video. She was in her late thirties, early forties when she shot Vogue.

Another great some by Madonna. I’m almost 50 and grew up listening to Madonna for years, and I also have loved old movies and Love Marilyn Monroe. You guys should definitely check the movies, Gentlemen’s prefer blondes, Marilyn’s Diamonds are a girls best friend she sings in the movie is Wonderful! And this video is a take from that movie
