There is a funny and very poignant story in Ken Dryden's book "The Game" about the song Lucille and Montreal Canadiens hard working forward Rejean (Reggie) Houle. The Game is one of the best sports books ever written and it tells of the team being on the bus and them singing Lucille when it would come on the radio. But they would stop because they realized it was "Reggie's song" and he sang it by himself with great sincerity. The book is worth it alone just to read the story about Guy Lapointe's hair. Actually I think you can see that story in the Google preview. I LOL every time I read it, I recommend you to go find it :)

I saw Kenny in concert once. He said that in a lot of songs that tell a story, there's someone you feel sorry for. In "Lucille," he said, some people feel sorry for the husband, some feel sorry for Lucille, some feel sorry for the four hungry children, "and I met one weird person who felt sorry for the crop in the field."

You need to dive into Glenn Campbell, country is not my genre but that man was a guitar king played on many other artists albums tours and not just country. He had his own TV show and was a country legend and hit maker. Kenny is a legend no doubt, great song, but can’t believe you haven’t dived into Glen Campbell, he’s literally the Elvis/ Beatles of country and one of the best guitarists ever. Even Eddie Van Halen revered this guy and once said he would love to have guitar lessons from the late great GC🤘hope you know who EVH is 😂

Campbell dropped off the map fast after the 80s. I wouldn't call him The Beatles or Elvis of country. He was great and very popular for a while, but there was never an equivalent of the Beatles or Elvis in country. The closest anyone came to that was Hank Williams Jr. Jr's time close to that level of fame was too brief, and pretty much limited to the market in the USA.

I love how you both got invested in the story. Jay says, "you better put your ring back on" and Amber says "Go back home." It's so great to see people who can appreciate that music can have many purposes. It's not just about the beat to make you dance, but it can be about conveying meaningful stories that touch your heart, or it can just be about making you laugh or cry.

“Ruby don’t take your love to town” was written by country musician Mel Tillis, you might remember from Hee Haw. It was based on a true story, his parents lived next door to a couple in Florida, the guy was an army officer who just returned from the Korean War, in a wheel chair from being shot up in the war, the real life story closely followed the song actually. The wife was going out and cheating behind his back until he reached the breaking point and he shot her. Most people equate the song with a Vietnam veteran, as it was released well after the Korean conflict.

This song, The Gambler, & Coward of the County all came out when I was a kid (age 10, 11, & 12... I turned 55 yesterday). Coward of the County is my favorite as it's another great story told in song form. That one will really get you worked up, once you realize what the song is about. But it has a awesome message behind the lyrics. Please give that one a listen to soon, you won't be disappointed. Other wonderful love songs from Kenny include - She believes in me, Through the years, You decorated my life, Don't fall in love with a dreamer, We've got tonight, & You can't make old friends...

Harry was not only a great storyteller, but also a humanitarian and activist. He founded an organization called World Hunger Year (now WHY Hunger). About half the concerts he did every year were benefits. He used to say “one for me and one for the other guy”. In 1977, he was a member of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger. In 1987 he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor for his humanitarian work. As teachers and parents, you may appreciate the lyrics to Flowers are Red.

When I was a teenager, my dad would drag the family out to the local Elks Lodge almost every Friday night for their steak dinners. After we'd eaten, my dad would usually get on the organ and entertain whoever was still around drinking and socializing, and as I got into my later teens I would often join him on my keyboard. Occasionally, we would bring in outside entertainment though, and there was this one guy who did a sort of karaoke routine. He had a setup with prerecorded songs, and he'd either sing to them, or he'd play the flute or saxophones or a mix of both. And we'd have him come in and play two to three times a years, for several years. This was one of the songs he would sing. And every time he did, a couple of the men, the "class clowns" of the lodge, if you will, would find some random woman in the room and fall to their knees in front of her, BEGGING her not to leave them and the most overly dramatic pantomime you could imagine. And the later in the evening he waiting before finally playing this song, the more drunk the clowns got, and the more outrageous the pantomime as they begged a new "Lucille" not to leave them.
