Can we talk about how mark is actually really good for someone who hasn’t played in years like I don’t play for one day and lose all muscle memory Edit: since this is blowing up for no reason after a whole fucking year let me clear some things up. I’m a professional percussionist. I am familiar with music to say the least. I UNDERSTAND WHAT MUSCLE MEMORY IS! I remember when I picked up my grandpas trumpet (81) he tells me to hand it over. He hadn’t played in about 65 give or take years and he just goes, “let me show you how Maynard used to do it” (he studied under the legendary trumpet lead Maynard Ferguson growing up in Philly). He then proceeded to hit a double high c. Perfectly in tune with no struggle at all. Muscle memory is clearly a thing. My point is I find it impressive how mark was just like “oh hear I’ll play some trumpet” after not doing so for years and did so without sounding horrible. All you five year olds here saying “tHaTs NoT iMPrEsSiVe I pLaY mUcH bEtTeRr” dip shit you’ve probably been practicing. Mark hadn’t touched a trumpet in Damn (heard someone said) 8 years.

XD what instrument do you play to forget...I mean I play flute and there is music and the notes are really annoying in some parts because you have to lift up the fingers 2 and 3 on the left hand for a note and it's very uncomfortable

As a clarinet, "those fricking dotted eighth notes" is SO relatable. We're playing a machine themed show this year, and quite literally almost every note is steccatto except in our 3rd movement, cause then they're accented. It's pretty much hell. And at 152 and 176 BPM, it's not pleasant to play.

MissionMuffle actually it's not plastic. A plastic trumpet would not have metal valves. Someone in our band has a black trumpet and it's metal. There's a difference in sound too. Some are just always flat

Im always like 1st time wrong god dammit 2nd time wrong Im going to kill you 3rd time wrong *grunting noices* 4th time wrong AHHHHHHHH 5th time wrong OMG IM STUPID! 6th time wrong WHY DOES THIS EVEN EXIST?!!? 7th time wrong im going to lose control ! 8h time wrong calm down...eveeyone does mistakes 9th time wrong HOW DOES THIS EVEN FUCKING WORK!ITS JUST A FUCKING PICE OF SHIT ! I CANT DO IT ! *deep breaths* i got this. 10th time wrong Piano *headplant on the notes over and over ,then bang my hands on the piano, then get up leave the room and come back tomorrow to try again* Flute *make weird moves with hands trying to break the flute and leave* Violin *scream amd swear then put the violin down- coz its expensive and i bought it woth my money- continue cursing leave the room amd eat something sweet*

Serial Killer 1945 In the grand scheme, 7th grade first chair doesn't mean much. I've been playing a brass instrument for near as makes no difference 20 years, so I figured I would go ahead and put in my two cents. On most trumpets, anytime you use the third valve, in order to be in tune with everybody else, you have to extend the third valve slide. The amount of extension depends on the overall intonation of the ensemble, though it should be added that you need to be listening to the lower voices in the ensemble to gauge where that slide needs to be. Regardless, that's pretty awesome that you made it to first chair! The only thing I would like to say beyond that, is to never feel like you have mastered your instrument. There will always be somebody out there better than you are. Just keep up the good work, and you'll be surprised where you end up.

skull lady in concert pitch, it's Bb, but since not everyone learns to play in concert pitch, they change the name & notes to fit the instrument

Mark plays so beautifully even after not playing for awhile. I haven't been able to play my trumpet in a couple years because it's still with my parents, but as soon as I'm able to grab it I'll be playing the hell out of it. This also shows that the coolest kids in school were the band kids. At my old high school, us band kids got a bad rep, but we were the chillest and most inclusive out of everyone

You are technically correct but in reality no. They are considered preforming arts. In a sport you have to know concept rather than specific exact movements. In corp and band you are trying to use exact movments that rarely change. This removes a very important feature most athletes need to have that you dont need as a marcher, adaptibility. This isnt to say it isnt physcally strain or difficult but it is not a practical sport any more than theatre is.

mason harris I totally agree with you. The way I see it, is it's physically straining like a sport. But it's more complex and percise like performing arts. (Football players get on my nerves saying that band is for people who are lazing and don't want to do anything else. =_=)

mason harris He is also correct in reality. Remember, the definition of a sport is a competitive event that requires some degree of skill or ability. DCs and Marching Bands both fall under that category.

Preston Jackson Did I not say he was technically correct but it is much more an art than a sport. Not to mention, while that is the offical defintion, the defintion has been changing. Look at esports. They requure little physical activity but are still technically sport. The word is coming to mean competion that requires adaptibilty rather than competion that requires physically strain. In a sport like football, you have to be able to have basic skill and convert them to plays. In marching arts, you learn a set show and know what to expect when you preform it. Another element is the form of competion. In most traditional sports, you are judged relativly to your oppenet. In marching arts, you should be judge reguardless of another band or corps show. This creates somthing that most sports dont have. It is theoretically possible to have a perfect show. It will most likely never happen but it is possible. This is unotainable in most sports. Another aspect is that in most sports, the athletes are the only ones affecting score. In marching arts, the way the show was designed affects the score. So, yes by the current official definition, they are sports. However in practice, they are not. And by later defintions they may not be at all. And an important thing to remember is their name. The marching *ARTS*

Texting Stories meh they’re not that bad. I have to sing Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies and OML THISE STUPID HIGH NOTES!!! And the teacher lowered it a LOT! At least it’s staccato so it’s not toooo bad but holy hell!

Totally understand the struggle with Music Theory Mark. I was dealing with it when I was a guitarist in high school Jazz Band and now college for Jazz Combos.

This is the first time ever that my daughter is watching someone play a trumpet (she sees me play my flute pretty regularly). She's just sitting here next to me completely mesmerized. She's 20 months old. lol And then all the sudden she looks over at me and has this huge grin and just squeals with excitement! lol She loved it! :)

also this may be because I’m percussionist, and it might be the stream quality or be out of tune, but that concert scale sounded off
