Thank you for the very balanced and objective review. As a watch enthusiast on the Omega camp, I appreciate the perks that makes the Sub more easily accepted as the "better" watch. It is thinner, lighter, has a more comfortable bracelet. Most wearers would prefer thinner, lighter watches on a more flexible bracelet. Most wearers, esp if they only have 1-2 watches, will not put a luxury diver on a rubber or sailcloth strap. So for mass appeal, the Sub takes it. As a matters of personal preference, I have never found issues with thicker, heavier, bigger watches. The heft doesnt put me off - I know that I can easily adapt to the wearing experience. Will i prefer to not adapt? I'm not sure - because I do find it discomforting thinking that "the watch isnt there". Having said that, these are personal preferences. Due to my professional capacity, wearing a watch with such brand cache can be rather sensitive. Ranging from ppl thinking its a fake, to ppl thinking that I am trying to stick it their faces. Dealing with such issues can get emotionally draining when you wish to just enjoy your watch in your life. So on a personal note, I will always keep my SMP 300M (white dial). It isnt a Sub - and doesnt get associated with unnecessary assumptions. It isnt trying to be a Sub, which is awesome, because the SMP 300M truly have a character of its own. In that way, it is unique and different - and I like it that way. So often have I seen a diner across the aisle with a standard black Sub, and I count my blessings that Omega gives us SMP options in 7 different dial colours. Which is just fantastic because I like having options. Final note. In assessing preferences, I suppose we also need to take into account availability. With the SMP 300M, its just about finding the time to walk into an AD and have it on your wrist once you walk out. If you are a new buying looking to get a Sub, well the games have only just begun. And do pack a much larger budget because you will need to "help your AD" clear off his old / unwanted inventory before he/she "rewards" you with a Sub, years later.

Great thoughts. I agree, the SMP 300M is "more accessible" and "wearable" in the contexts you have said above and there is a lot to be said for being able to walk into a store and just buy what's in stock.

I have that same ceramic Omega Seamaster Pro 300m. It's an absolute beauty, and i still enjoy it as much now as the day I bought it in 2021. The wrist presence of the Omega is so much greater than the Sub. The only thing I'm not wild about is the skeletonized handset and rather poor lume. I wish Omega would make a white dial no date variant with ceramic case.

Saw this coming. The clash of the titans. A topic of much controversy. The battle of lion versus hyena. Well done on an unbiased, honest, balanced review. Got to respect both brands for their contribution to horology. I recently visited both boutiques & had a completely different experience. Rolex asked me questions about my job and what I already have in my collection. It was like a job interview! Omega just put watch after watch in front of me to try on. The only question they asked me was why do you prefer to buy a Rolex? I think I answered all the Rolex questions correctly but I failed the Omega test.

Great video. Have been looking forward to it. My thoughts are, yes, they are too different to compare (especially your Omega). Tachymeter? Rolex is -2+2 which is way above COSC specifications. Social circumstances do not change the watch itself. Not being able to wear a watch because of fear or work is a secondary consideration, as is availability. The Submariner is easily the ultimate one watch for life watch, but reality is that a lot of people would have another, so get a……. Planet Ocean 😂 Cannot believe you do not have a planet ocean or maybe an UltraDeep 😈

Completely agree with everything you mention! My favorite watch is my speedmaster racing coaxial. It doesn’t have the same notoriety as either the submariner or the original moon watch, but I absolutely love it and prefer it 95% of the time. I recently got sucked into the Rolex game for the “value” reasons, and I have to admit that it’s a terrible reason to base a decision on a watch. Sure, it will retain value, but I just don’t love it like my other watches. I’m forcing myself to wear it, in hopes that I get there and bond with it, but it’s just a slower process than I was hoping for. Also, forget about traveling with the Rolex. I still recall walking down Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and that really showed me how focused pickpockets around the world can get with Rolex watches. I wore a gshock to Antarctica, but that probably makes sense. 😂. I will admit, the 12mm thickness of the submariner does feel really nice in comparison to some of the thicker watches I’ve had. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Glad I found your channel and subscribed.

Thanks for your thoughts. Ah the Rolex value argument, to be honest I have steered clear myself on that reason, if I was into that I would have just bought a bunch by now that an AD would offer in the hopes of one day getting A Sub, GMT or Daytona, but I just can't do that. I do love some Rolex watches now for sure, but I also still love others. And yes, I would definitely not risk a Rolex run down Las Rambla! That place is so much fun but I was genuinely worried every moment I would get pickpocketed. thanks for watching.

That said, the Submariner is iconic and an excellent watch in its own right, with a better bracelet. I’d rate the Seamaster a 9.7 out of 10, and the Submariner a 9.8 out of 10.

A lot of vids comparing these two watches look at history, form and function, but never the brand. Which I think is odd because the brand's at least 2/3rds of the value of the watch. So comparing the brand's values (as perceived by watch muggles) imo Omega says: sigma - educated and very capable but understated. Rolex says: investment banker or vacuous celebrity. Would be interested in your take on the brand's values, and whether or not you care 😊, rather than the watches. Keep smiling; love the channel.

  • @AussieWristWatch

Well let's see, I'm double degree educated and have the Omega and Rolex... I am definitely not an investment banker (although I've at times wished I was so I could own that 911) - but am a lawyer so maybe I straddle both of your camps? I don't necessarily care re value, but as I touched on briefly in the vid, the Rolex does win there on pure "investment" and retention of price. I can't buy a watch based on this and this alone, but I won't lie having a few in the collection that are worth the same or more than the purchase price is kinda nice and you don't feel as guilty when you buy them, with respect to that buyers guilt I always have when I spend a large sum of money regardless of the item or whether it's actually needed or not.

@@AussieWristWatch Lawyer is good. If you'd said 'estate agent', that would have been different 🙂. Just to be serious for 2 mins if I can manage it (thanks for taking the time to reply so extensively btw), I was asking about the brands' values (the intangible things a brand says about those who engage with it - mainly to the 99% of people outside the 'watch bubble' in this case), but I used deliberately stupid examples like sigma person and banker. IMO Rolex's most astonishing achievement is brand recognition; most people outside the watch bubble wouldn't know (or care about probably) a Pagani from a Patek, but everyone knows Rolex. Depending on how you view the world, this has a downside because, to the same 99% of people, Rolex has become associated with values like wealth and status. Usually if a person engages with a brand, it's a signal that it's values are important to them - all this happens subconsciously and it's the main difference between the two watches (these are luxury items; more than half the equity in them is brand, the rest is materials, manufacturing, marketing etc). NKKK85 touched on this in their comment - they talked about Rolex's brand cache and people thinking they're 'sticking it in their faces'; it's a great comment. You're open, grounded, educated and happy - basically someone it would be nice to have a beer with and talk about watches and stuff. It doesnt feel like status is important to you (maybe it isn't generally, but it's useful when you're with a client?) - so I was asking if you had thought about any of this or if you cared. I suspect you don't care (respect to you); I sometimes wish I didn't but there it is. Love and peace from the UK.

The Omega is just the better-engineered watch. No anti-magnetic feature for the Rolex, no anti-reflective coating, no helium valve release, lower reserve power. The only reason why you went for the Rolex is because of the hype. Also, why are you listening to that bezel sound? I am sure 99% of the time you won't be using that. I think you are just being biased but of course that is fine, it is your watch and your channel so you can be biased. But just don't say that the Rolex is the better-made watch because it is objectively not true. cheers

Wow. As Mark Twain once said, 'It's not what we don't know that gets us in trouble. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so'. Power reserve is higher on the Sub. The Omega only has 55. She has the 41mm Sub, meaning the power reserve is 70. The Omega is anti-magnetic at 15,000 gauss. Rolex doesn't publish the anti-magnetic rating of its blue Parachrom equipped watches like the Sub, but testing published in patents show to reach 25,000 gauss. The Rolex has the same depth rating as the Omega without needing a Helium escape valve (Rolex tests its divers at 25% more than its advertised rating). I love both brands but Rolex is the better engineered watch. But I do love her Omega, and its lightness and comfort on wrist. Looking to buy the same 👍

It is complicated. There's collection, and then there's daily wear. In my collection, I have a 1967 5513 Sub, the top icon diver in fabulous condition, with its patented screwdown crown at the time. But then I also have a 1963 165.024 Seamaster300, way more beautiful, in fabulous condition, but not as iconic in status as the 5513. I don't wear them much, both are too sacred. For diving, it is the Omegas 2254 on rubber and 2232 full titanium that I wear, it will not be modern Sub (I don't care for modern Subs), but I may add another SMP, the 2231 full titanium black. And then, outside the water, I wear another 1963 165.024 Seamaster300, it was water-damaged and repaired with service parts, so is not worth much, but looks out of this world.

I tried on the NTTD Seamaster recently. It was too large for normal wrists. Why bother with titanium. Just make the watch thinner & 2mm smaller. Also that ugly HEV wort growing out at the 10'oclock, you don't need it for 300m. Rolex Sub is more refined. We don't like to speak of investment in money terms but how about investing in good timeless design. Rolex wins. Form follows function.
