The Debate - Rolex Submariner Date vs Omega Seamaster 300m Professional

An interesting market pricing update since I bought a watch.
My opinion on the age old Rolex Submariner Date and Omega Seamaster 300 Professional debate.
This includes many factors, because the questions needs to be answered this way.

It’s amazing to see how you have fallen in love with your Omega. I bought my first Omega in 2000, I didn’t buy my first Rolex until 2014. It allowed me to realize how amazing Omega’s are. Both are amazing watches, but the Omega is understated, and just as bullet proof as Rolex. All the craftsmanship and none of the hype, less danger of being robbed. There is a time and a place for both Rolex and Omega, having both gives you the opportunity to choose depending on your mood or your situation, and ultimately that is what Watch collecting should truly be about! Enjoy them both in good health sir. 👌🏻

I just got the green SMP 300. I haven't taken it off in 3 weeks. The Sub has to be thought about while wearing. The SMP on rubber disappears on the wrist.

I have both the sub 124060 and the black on black smp300. I bought the seamaster about 7 months ago and since then it’s hardly left my wrist. I really don’t mind it on the bracelet but it does look much better on the strap. I find I’m much more relaxed wearing the smp and I’m not worried about beating it around and really just using it as a tool watch. I agree with you 100% though that you need to experience both to fully appreciate what the smp is. It won’t substitute for a sub and it won’t get rid of that itch to own one. What it does do though is give you remarkable bang for your buck and give you a great looking and preforming watch for half the price. For anyone remotely interested in the smp I highly suggest just going out and trying one on in person.

The SMP, moneywise and technical aspect is the best watch. The Rolex has better presents brand recognition the reason why the Rolex is a lot more expensive because of the platinum that’s in the bezel and the white gold hands .. both watches a great.

I agree with you on the journey and milestone watches. You absolutely do appreciate other brands and watches way more once you have ‘been there, done that’. I appreciate other brands way way more nowadays… One other thing I have found ESPECIALLY nowadays is that many (especially in my industry) buy the Rolex to impress others and balk at other brands.

You are a cool dude and i really like your opinions and experiences you have with these watches, really resonates with me. It is really interesting how your "taste" and preferences changed over time, looking at your video history. I don't want this to get too long, but i must say, i never looked at the sub and seamaster as rivals strangely. Since i can remember i always thought of them as 2 pilars of the dive watch world. In fact i called them "bloodbrothers" when i began with the watch hobby. Keep it up, really like what you are doing! Subscriped! best regards from Germany, Dennis

10:24 you have single handedly covered every single sentiment that I feel toward Rolex. I'm the owner of a 126610LV and a BLNR that I was lucky enough to get for MSRP a couple years back. I'm actually on the verge of selling both. I've been on the "waitlist" for an AK for over a year now with my AD (even though I've spoken with the manager, it feels like I had to start over with my AD because my rep no longer works there). It feels the opposite of a luxury experience this time around. Also, because I live in a major city, wearing either of my Rolexes is a pain in the ass. Also have to be mindful what part of town I'm going to be in and always have to be looking over my shoulder to see who's spotting my watches. I've already had a couple of situations that could have gone south if I wouldn't have been immediately aware of my surroundings (I was able to leave immediately in both situations before anything happened). Both watches are insured but insurance isn't going to prevent robbers from pistol whipping me. In about half the robberies, the robbers pistol whip or attack their victims first (to put them in a vulnerable state) and only then ask for the watch afterwards. At this point it makes no sense to me having this much money tied up in watches that I can't daily wear. It feels like I've paid a lot of money to put a target on my back every time go out lol. With the money that either one of these will fetch me, I can get a timepiece that is five times the watch and that won't be as recognizable. While these models are still overvalued, I'm going to take advantage.

Great video. I just recently purchased the green SMP 300 on bracelet and I have ordered the rubber strap, this is my first luxury watch, I have side stepped the Tag, Breightling and Tudor. I think the bracelet dresses up the watch but the rubber looks good and probably better for daily wear. Like you said both are great watches, but for the price of the SMP you are getting alot of watch for the money and at the end of the day it's all down to personal taste. I am not craving my next luxury watch this one will keep me happy for many years. Peace.

Too old manish. The omega was nicer imo. I've never regretted that decision. My next watch more than likely is going to be a Rolex though. I was lucky and got a Sub after a 4 month wait, it was the watch I craved and I am pleased with it. A year later I bought a white SMP300, I often put my sub on for an hour or so, then pop upstairs to put the SMP on for the rest of the day. I've had my Seamaster for a couple of weeks and you're right, as someone who hasn't owned a Rolex; it does not kill my desire for a Submariner. My experience thus far has been a bit of a roller coaster ride, but I do appreciate it for its own merits. I disliked the lack of traction on the bezel, but I've either gotten used to it or have broken in the detents a bit more. I initially hated the bracelet, but I love the adjustability of the clasp and find it surprisingly comfortable for the weight and lack of taper.

I've owned a Sub 114060 a few years now, since one year or so I've been thinking about buying a SMP300 because I am really loving that watch (except the bracelet!) BUT so far I haven't gone for it because I can't justify another diver which looks similar to my Sub... Plus I already have a Rolex Explorer II, a DJ41 and an old Speedmaster. I'm concerned about wrist time and I am worried that I wouldn't wear the new watch much all things considered... (and I don't want to sell any of my current watches). So I must feel content with what I've got right now, I guess.

It was my milestone watch and will never be sold however I just realised I don't need another Rolex especially all the games you have to play with AD's. I have plenty of other watches too including 2 Omegas (Speedy and an early Planet Ocean) and a nice Tudor Black Bay 41mm which after this video will be sold and I'll be acquiring an SMP 300 on rubber. Haven't worked out which combo yet (black or green). And it's all your fault, Michael. :). Take care, brother and keep creating the no BS content. It's as refreshing as your SMP.

It's very hard to get the marketing stuff, price, availability and prestige out of one's head. For oneself and for the people around you. In the case of the Rolex, it helps me to wear them with a certain disrespect for their image. That may sound weird, but only then, i can fully appreciate their value.

13:20 is exactly what happened to me. Now I wear my golden eye black bond more than my sub. It’s more fun and the dial is more interesting. Funny enough I had the SMPC 5 years ago. It was my first expensive watch. I didn’t appreciate nor like it at all and sold it after 6months. Then I started the journey with Tag.

100% agree with the price differences. How can you really compare the two, it's not really fair. The Omega is a much better value for the price. In reality though the two watches are very similar and should be priced very similar but we all know Rolex prices have always been inflated even in the best of times.

I own the SMP you have, it’s a great watch which I wear everyday and have done for years. However, I’d have a sub in a heartbeat. But it says something about the power that Rolex has as a brand that you’re pleased with a second hand watch over retail price - when you can freely pick up an equivalent Omega! Rolex is an aspirational watch, that people will remember for the rest of their lives as marking a point that they ‘made it’, they probably won’t remember the Omega the same way.

agree 100% on 6 digit rolex exclusively on the bracelet. for one, the hole for the springbars are close to the case and make it a real PITA to get them on. Also, it will chew up your strap. Secondly, the 5 digit models are just better proportionally. Look better on a after market strap. 6 digit models, especially the sub, are beefier.

I love my seamaster professional 300m it's a beautiful watch. Worth every penny $5,000 to $7900 isn't cheap by no means. But that $5 grand is much easier to part with and to get over $9grand to $15 grand and so on..... and you get a watch that's damn close to the Rolex version... they are pretty similar and look similar. Both are absolutely amazing and beautiful. You can't go wrong with either.. I got em both and I wear the omega way more than the rolex.. to me it's just better. Some like it some don't and some love it n prefer it over the Rolex and vice versa.. it's a personal preference. They are very durable very nice watches.iv had mine since 09 and it's never had any problems and my sub same with it and my presidential it's had a prob in the past but I got it fixed. It sits in my safe now.. it's solid Gold and honestly it don't go with everything so it don't see much action anymore. Now one watch I want is the hulk it's the nicest looking watch from Rolex in my opinion.. ;)

In the 90's I bought a Seamaster 300 Chrono Diver. Then to satisfy an itch I bought a black Submariner and whoa, then the shit really hit the fan! The Rolex looks better when you are out of the water, while the Omega looks better while you are *in* the water! The Lums on the Omega are better. The Omega has a lum on the bezel at zero. Unlike a Daytona, the Omega can time two activities at the same time. Unlike a Daytona, The Omega's pushers don't screw down, yet they work even while under water! Unlike the Submariner, you can read the date even on an angle. The Omega's sapphire crystal doesn't reflect in your face like a Submariner does.

Great Comparison and thoughts shared here. Just my two cents: When Rolex becomes Patek ( availability & price ), Omega slips into it's place. Oh I know what you all are thinking! And whatabout Tudor? Well, Tudor will be the next Omega. ( Affordable average Joe watch ). Mark my words... Omega just need to start killing off some models noone asking for it and they will get even more sought after. I think Michael did a good Job with buying himself this Omega SMP 300, Seamaster Professional 300m Diver and I really see him enjoying this watch for ever.

A couple of comments as a new SMP 300 owner: 1 the HEV is hardly noticeable, it doesn’t catch or get in the way at all. 2 when turning the bezel, grab it at 10 and 40 (as to 12 and 30) and you will not look like silly KZreadrs with Vaseline on their fingers. 3 the rotor is a little noisy. 4 because the date window is soo deep, it can cast a shadow on the date wheel (white dial anyway) making the date look off cantered sometimes.

Always find the argument to be an infantile mute argument .. Both are great sports watches so it’s what’s best for you as an individual that counts . I own both and probably don’t have a favourite both have their advantages however my omegas get the wrist time .Bracelet and bezel action personally think goes to Rolex . Movement AR coating to omega . I scratch my head why omega don’t update the heavy clunky dated bracelet, on the rubber it’s great .. I have six modern steel sports and they have never moved from the vault in 6 months I’m just over rolex as a brand . I undoubtedly enjoy omega and Tudor more these days , no drama on wrist . I had the same experience last time I was in the Rolex boutique. Asian tourists I believe from Singapore buying watches in Glasgow it’s horseshit . This type of shit puts you off the brand completely..

Hey Michael, very thoughtful video! At the time of writing there are 835 Subs for sale in the UK alone, starting at £8k for 16610s. Talk about a watch nobody wants! 6-7 years ago they were around £4-5k which frankly is where they should be. I’ve never owned one so these are my thoughts. It’s an attractive watch I’ve lusted over in the past, like everyone else, but looking at it objectively it is a bit boring. Classy, sporty, timeless, yes, no doubt. But there are much more interesting watches out there for less than half the price. I have a 3573 Speedy and am an Omega fanboy but the SMP300 is not for me. I don’t like the bracelet and can’t stand the skeleton hands. It’s a fantastic watch for the price, but for the same price I’d lean towards a used SPO600 which has better specs and looks more timeless, though I admit even the 38.5mm version is like wearing a tank on your wrist. But here’s the thing about the Omegas v Rolex debate. I went to my local AD to put my name down for my grail watch an OP36 blue dial (I have a 6.25 wrist). I got the Rolex AD treatment and was told 2 years then interviewed by a sidekick. I was able to handle a DJ36 they had on display. It was supremely beautiful but for RRP of over £6k, I thought it was flimsy, it’s the exact word which came to mind at the time. I’m sorry but for that price I can get a BB36 and an Omega diver or a BB GMT, all of which are just as well made. Granted they don’t have that timeless iconic look, but imo are more interesting to look at, cheaper to own and probably would get much more wrist time. I’m not a flipper so if I get the call (I’m not chasing) I’m not sure I’d actually buy it, and if I did, I’m not sure I’d actually wear it. Now what is the point in that?

It’s all over priced nonsense mate, I agree. For example The new deep sea challenge won’t sell at all, until it is discontinued, at which time everyone will buy it just to keep as an asset lol.

Great comparison, I own both, and I completely agree with your views. Smaller men under 6.5 inch wrists may not be able to look good wearing the smp300. Smp300’s rotor is slightly noisy. SMP300 is incredibly good value and feels a little more special as there aren’t as many people wearing them as subs. Agree that almost all modern Rolexes look weird on aftermarket straps. Lastly, my advise is that if anyone really wants a Rolex, go get one, do not get the smp300 as it is not a sub replacement as it has its own identity. Both great watches. Subscribed. Cheers.
