Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Luxury Watch Review

Omega Seamaster is a name that commands respect from fans of luxury dive watches. Since 1957, the Seamaster has held the line against its eternal rival from Geneva, the Rolex Submariner, but the latest generation of Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean packs the tech and taste to gain a jump on the stolid "Sub."
Omega opens its volley with equal measures of class and mass; the 42mm stainless steel case features a full-bodied presence that surpasses the comparatively dainty Submariner's 40mm span. Enthusiasts with large wrists or Hublot-era standards of case size will find the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean the perfect go-to when the mantra is "go-big or go home."
At the same time, 42mm ensures that this Omega Seamaster remains viable for a large range of wrists; the forearms of Shaq are not required.
Inside its burly ferrous carapace, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M benefits from the refinement of Omega's caliber 2500 co-axial movement. With a George Daniels co-axial escapement, automatic winding, a jump-date, and a 42-hour power reserve this COSC automatic chronometer takes the fight to Rolex in the tech department.
And check out the three-link stainless steel dive bracelet. While Omega's Seamaster line has featured some of the finest bracelets of recent decades, the Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial sets a new standard. Each link is beautifully finished and supple on the skin, but the piece is more than comfortable; it's formidable to behold and reassuringly solid.
The Planet Ocean bracelet is rock solid, and it boasts a clasp to match. With twin-trigger actuation, the clasp offers the kind of security that no friction-fit competitor can match. Even better, the clasp offers one of the best deployant dive extensions in the business; it's equally useful over a dive suit or a winter coat.

    Hi Tim! I have great reverence for both your presentation and "knowledge" in these reviews. And so, I'd love it if you were correct that the hands and hour markers on this great watch featured white gold. But according to my knowledge of Omega's products, the steel Seamasters/PO's don't. Rather they are rhodium plated. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks, David

    +1000lightyrs Hi David, you're correct. I'm not exempted from mistakes, and I've corrected my characterization of Omega dial features (hands, logo, indices) in subsequent videos. While Rolex and many others do use gold, you're 100% right that Omega uses rhodium-plate (with very few exceptions). Best, Tim

    Bought mine in 2005 (in 45.5mm). Amazing piece, my only watch and daily wearer for 7 years straight. I'd switch from bracelet to rubber strap to alligator. So versatile. Less worn nowadays but very much loved, always a satisfying presence on the wrist, especially on the originals rubber strap as in Casino Royale.

  • @richl9049
    @richl90494 жыл бұрын

    I just ran across this video. I originally started out with the 45.5 version of this (but on rubber and with orange numerals on the dial). Bought it brand new from the Big T in the mid-2000s when the big watch trend was really popping. Ended up selling that one because it just felt too large on my 7 inch wrist. Fast forward to last year and I realized how much I love and miss the styling of this generation PO but also that I just probably picked the wrong size back then (should have gotten this exact 42mm version). So, after a bit of a search, I found this exact watch, with box and papers. I received it, sent it to Omega for service, got it back, and now it feels like I have a NOS version of this watch. It will be going nowhere!!! Cheers, Rich.

    this is such a fantastic watch. The fact that you can pick one up in mint condition with box and papers for about 3 Grand is amazing. You never know but I think 25 years from now this watch will have gone up considerably. One of the few of Omegas that will do so. Regardless of any of that kind of stuff, it is arguably one of the best daily wear tool watches available. and, why I'll personally I would prefer to wear an actual dress watch with a suit, this watch, while classic and throw back in many ways, is still a modern watch in appearance and finish. With the sharp bezel and dial, you can actually pull it off pretty darn well with a suit if need be or if that's your choice/ style. Love it.

    Good god, you are so good at 'words'. lol I'm trying really hard to decide between the 42 and the 45.5 --I have nearly 7 1/2 wrist size, and 2 inches flat on top... I have no where around me to 'test drive' these watches. I'm leaning towards the 45.5 simply because it's 'more watch'. However, I'm getting the 8500 movement.

    +VolrathMTG Thank you for the kind words! I think you're on the right track with the 45.5mm. You have more than enough wrist for it, and it's a proven fact that if you ever want to sell or trade, the 45.5mm holds its value better. Quality is even (and excellent) across both sizes, but from a proportional standpoint, you could wear the 45.5mm with great style and perfectly natural fit. The 8500 is a flawless movement and one of the finest produced by any manufacture today at any price. Great choice. Best, Tim

    +Gary Martin Hi Gary, welcome to our channel! The Planet Ocean series is excellent. They were good when they debuted in 2005, and they've become the best-in-class choice since the 2011 arrival of the caliber 9300 (chrono) and 8500 co-axials. Those movements are unbelievable pieces, and the timing results of the 9300/8500 watches at our offices have started to re-frame my view of what's possible with a modern mechanical movement. Deviations of 1-2 seconds per day in six positions have become routine during intake testing. Seriously impressive stuff, and the Planet Ocean case/bracelet combo is just as solid. Best, Tim

    +tanyet Hi tanyet, the SMPO grew quite a bit over the years with new movements, complications, and display case backs. This early 42mm example is the slimmest of the lot, and it's between 13mm and 14mm. After the 2005 first-generation models, these swelled considerably. The new ones also offer tremendous capability and value, so the tradeoff is larger dimensions for capability. Many will choose the earlier models for their fit, and all SMPOs are very, very desirable Omegas. When purchased pre-owned, any Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a great value for a "lifetime" watch. Best, Tim

    Nice review. But if you're going to go through the trouble of making a video that's going to get tens of thousands of views, why not size the bracelet to that it fits you. Even if it means taking out some links and putting them back in when you're done with the shoot. It would look a lot better than scrunching the bracelet with your right hand while you're pretending to wear the watch on your left.
