    Important note: If you copy Ivy, the copy doesn't keep the mutate count of the real Ivy. It gets relevant with cards like Auspicious Starrix that care about the number of times you mutated on a creature.

    @@valek4201 TL;DR: Mutate gets special treatment because the way it works is really weird, and the abilities are copied. Yes. Being mutated isn’t a copyable value. But unlike other effects that grant things to creatures, I’m pretty sure everything that isn’t the top card isn’t actually on the battlefield, or in any zone for that matter. To get around this, attributes gained through mutate are considered to be part of that creature, and not a part of the card that’s actually granting them, since that card doesn’t technically exist. So when the game goes to copy the rules text of the card, it does copy them.

    I have been playing Ivy since pre-release and the deck is absolutely OP. I have clone effects but did not know they clone the whole mutation pile as well as a single creature. One of the most important effects that I've learned is I've played Abduction on an opponents creature which I copied on Ivy. Well upon destruction, when she returned- all of her mutations returned as individual creatures. So basically after a boardwipe. I got fully reloaded wide.

    Copying mutate makes the copy a token, so if you mutate on another creature and copy the effect with ivy putting the mutate ontop of ivy the resulting creature is a token. When tokens enter the graveyard as a state based action they disappear so you can't bring them back, tbh I don't know if you get your commander back if its the original card underneath a token might have to double check that.

    @@f34rl355m4r1n3 Man, cheers for going back and looking that up, AND then coming back to explain. Awesome The way I try to keep track of how mutate functions works sort of like this: - when the creatures are mutated and in play, they are functionally the same creature, and the mutate cards are just changing how that creature appears outwardly while gaining new abilities. - once they leave play, via dying or exiling or being bounced to hand etc, they split back into their original forms (as cards or tokens) but they still keep their shared abilities as that dying/ exiling/ bounce effect resolves. So things like undying, or the 'tuck into library' effects of gods, or other effects such as that still apply to everything in the pile. Once the death/ bounce/ exile effect finishes resolving, all tokens disappear (because they can't exist once they leave the battlefield), then the undying/ god triggers resolve and affect all cards in that pile. Mutate is a confusing mechanic, but it's so damn cool

I guess you could proxy your mutate cards and use those as tokens? I bet you end up with an large ammount of manipulation of permanents and end up taking a lot of time and annoy the table? .... Heads up this deck is not easy to run especially if you take it down the path of using mutate, auras, copying your creatures and instant/sorcery spells that provide creatures buffs for turn. I had to make a symbol system to represent which group of creatures have which buffs because it gets messy fast, that's not even including summoning sick, non-summoning sick, tapped and not tapped. I obviously enjoy self inflicted suffering as I have made a mutate deck before this so managed to understand the intricacies of copying the mutate spell with volo and twinning staff, if I hadn't the deck would of been too much for me to pilot. To the brave souls that try good luck, and expect to make alot of mistakes! 😂

Get 2 lands that can tap for 4+ in total, have ivy and ewit in play, snap them both back to your hand, tapping the 2 lands and untapping them in between copies of snap resolving to make 8 mana, cast ewit returning snap, ivy and snap again costing a total of 7 mana, you can do this infinitely making one extra mana every time.

    I appreciate the budget constraint and all, but you would have to be completely insane to not include Vesuvan Duplimancy in this deck. I spent the entire video waiting for it, and was really disappointed it was never mentioned.

    It's a fantastic card and I think one of the goals of this deck is that all the are cards are under $1 at the time of making. Vesuvan Duplimancy is currently an $8 card but worth every penny.

    Pretend the mutate card is just an enchantment that can change ivy’s name, p/t & legendary status.

  • @amodking

    Mutate is an effect you have an option of doing 1 of 2 things. So let’s say, you have a 1/1 elf that says tap for 1 green mana. And you’re going to use mutate on that elf that’s a 2/2 frog whenever this mutates draw a card. When you choose to do that action you can choose to keep it as a 1/1 elf tap for 1 green mana and just add the text draw a card whenever this mutates on it. Or you can have that elf become a 2/2 frog that has whenever this mutates draw a card with the added ability to tap for mana. So you can choose which creature you want the head of the stack to be and everything mutated onto it gains the abilities. Popular tactics is abusing cheap mutate on a 1/1 infect. So you hit early with the infect but later on you can mutate onto it to become a 9/9 keeping the infect text. ((I was killed this way lol)). With this commander it gets more confusing who would have guessed, you choose to mutate another creature and your commander also mutates as well. So I’m fact you’re doubling up mutate triggers on different targets. However mutate triggers that say whenever this mutates stays on that specific creature.

    When you cast the mutate it’s targets you creature #1, then another gets copied and the copy targets ivy, you may then cast the mutate cost and cast that copy onto ivy mutating her separately from the first, your second mutate creature is a token

  • @Stray7

    @Stray7

    Жыл бұрын

    When targeting a creature other than Ivy, Mutate works much like any other aura -- you get a token copy of the mutate spell to place on Ivy. When you target Ivy herself with a mutate spell, you copy it. You can choose to make one of them the "top" card, changing the characteristics of Ivy's name, power/toughness, creature type, and legendary status. Any mutate copies you don't put on top just add their abilities to Ivy. Separate instances of a mutate ability trigger independently, so most of the "when this creature Mutates, [do X]" abilities will happen twice (once for the initial spell, and once for the copy). Ivy will mutate once for each instance of a mutate spell on her, so those abilities that count how often she's mutated will count each instance separately (because those check on resolution of the ability)

    Not so much. Ivy is a Cast trigger, while Yarok is an ETB trigger. They are very different decks -- Yarok can't copy mutate abilities or auras, for instance, while Ivy can't duplicate ETB effects and won't work with effects that simply put stuff on to the battlefield without being cast.
