Omar Suleiman is a Muslim scholar and activist. One of CNN’s Top 25 Muslim American Change-Makers, Suleiman was recognized by the Antiracist Research and Policy Center of American University as an
honoree to best embody the abolitionist commitment to social change. This and other accolades, recognise his work surrounding immigration reform, disability inclusivity, and police brutality. Currently the Resident Scholar of the Valley Ranch Islamic Center, Suleiman works to educate regarding Islamic values which may be used in the pursuit of liberation.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

Did he mention my country's name 15:16 ? "The Gambia" wow this is strange and heart warming at the same time. Gambia is one of the smallest countries in West Africa and little well-known in the world. I am surprised he mentioned the country's name when there are bigger countries there. My love for Sh Omar Sulaiman has increased even more.

I will never forget how I was made to face my own unconscious prejudice and humble myself. I’m a Muslim. Working in an emergency dental clinic. Two men walked in just as we were about to grab some lunch. With the emergency dental department it was always a grabbed lunch because we always ran over due to the nature of emergencies. As we walked past reception we heard the receptionist arguing as we had no more capacity to accept another patient. The man accompanying the patient was insistent and pleading “please it will just take a few minutes my friend will just require a prescription “. Of course we hear this ALL the time so I think we all collectively rolled our eyes. Long story short after we returned from lunch the receptionist HAD squeezed him in as the last patient of the day under the off chance that one clinic may finish earlier and be able to see him. As luck would have it we ended seeing him. The patient did indeed only get a prescription we wouldn’t have been able to do anything else due to severe swelling. The man accompanying him explained he was a dentist in his home country. He had his own clinic. A beautiful home. Family etc. One day a bomb hit and that was his life over. Before he knew it he was a refugee in an unknown country with everyone demeaning him because he looks a certain way. His life his education all reduced to nothing. I ask you would ANYONE want to leave such a thriving life and subject themselves to the scorn refugees face every moment?

People commit suicide for the silliest of things and for the deepest of things but none if it suggests anything more than they gave up, justified or not. It's a subjective experience that you're not experiencing yourself to give a judgement on if they can bear it or not. Now if you believe in Islam then verses of comfort can aid you such as these, Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the people who stand against faith" Obviously this is only effective for those who believe.

I visited three cities and I seen large numbers of Syrian refugees in my home country and they were doing great work in the healthcare in those cities. I am actually extremely happy our Syrian brothers and sisters can honor us by hosting them with the little we have. Even though we did have language barriers, speaking for myself since I don't speak Arabic, can sense how comfortable they were with me in the mosques and market places. The Syrian brothers that started speaking somali and the brothers that speak English it was that much more special to have the honor to talk with them in Somalia. Welcome brothers and sisters.

As American people, it makes no sense to stir up military, political and economical chaos in another country and not expect people to flee. Where would American government/people expect them to flee to? Likely the country with the most resources and opportunities … sadly, ill-gotten resources from the very countries people are escaping from.

Exactly. Afghanistan has been sanctioned by West and their funds have been blocked and stolen by US. The sanction has caused starvation and death. But no media coverage on that. Then they have problem with Afghan refugee crisis. You don't let the country to flourish and wants to mock the country for not flourishing.

They could have resettled in any other Muslim country, like Saudi Arabia - UAE etc, but didn't because they were not invited or made welcome, plus Muslims want freedom, something you can't find in Islamic countries. Therefore Muslims lie, steal & do anything else they can to enter a safe Christian country, then go about dismantling that very same country, so as to make it in the image of their former Country, if you've ever visited a Muslim country you'd know what's materializing here, it's called a Trojan Horse in the making. Time to wake up before it's too late ! 😮

I like Omar Suleiman but I wish Muslim students would ask more challenging questions for other non Muslims to understand Islam better. They asked advice again and again which was mundane to be honest, he already gives a lot of advice in his everyday life that we can benefit. The talk became boring when you didn’t let him show his intellect. Thank you for the host and the Afghan woman for great questions. Oh man, you’re studying at Oxford, can’t you be more articulate about what is going on in the world? Those questions were so selfish.

The question about Afghanistan was so silly. The U.S. spent 20 years in Afghanistan. They bombed SCHOOLS, killed STUDENTS, raped GIRLS. Before them, Afghans fought off the Soviets and the British twice. You ignore all those atrocities and complain about how there is no schooling for girls? I support women getting an education, but mindlessly repeating Western propaganda without taking into consideration what Afghanistan went through is silly to say the least. If anything you should complain about how France, a wealthy stable country, is denying Muslim girls from getting an education by refusing to allow them to enter schools with a hijab or even an abaya even if its without a hijab.
