eraserman34 It's like PC users that hate on mac software/hardware that haven't had more than 10 minutes experience with it lol, totally agreed. Sometimes I can drive a car that is new to me for just a moment and hate it. Then get forced to drive that same car for a week and fall in love with it.

You are far the best camera reviewer on KZread. So glad I found your channel.

APS-C isn't the largest sensor you can get in mirrorless, that would be the A7 series with their 35mm full frame sensor. :) Olympus and Panasonic aren't going to change their sensors any time soon as they have such a massive investment in the Micro Four Thirds system. Also it is by far the the most versatile system and the most mature. The E-M1 also has a PC sync socket, something we should surely see in a Sony mirrorless body. There's also a button to switch from screen to EVF (something I wish the A6000 had as I can't easily shoot from the hip without the screen blanking out). All Olympus bodies allow you to embed your copyright info to the files IN-CAMERA, this should be a standard on all cameras. You are able to apply the filters in nearly any mode and also in the in-camera RAW developer with a lot of adjustment too. I also wish the A6000 had more aspect ratios than just 3:2 and 16:9. Love to shoot square JPEGS on my Panasonic and Olympus bodies. Had a Fuji that could also do multiple ratios. You need to put the video into M mode rather than P mode within the menus on the Olympus bodies. Then you should be able to adjust whilst filming. For the JPEGs did you have the noise reduction turned off on the Olympus? I have found them to be the BEST in camera JPEGs with plenty more detail than anything else out there but only with the NR off. Although the Sony and Fuji files look great for colour and sharpness they can be watercoloury when viewed close up. Also, Sony need to start to put touchscreens across the range makes a lot of tasks particularly focus points easier and quicker.

edshotsdotcodotuk I meant for the price range. I do own an A7r. I agree with you on the rest, I was very impressed. Didn't know about the button though. The pc sync adapter for the a6000 is $14. Video was on M mode by the way.

The problem with Sony is the lack of lenses. 35 1.8 is good, 50 1.8 too,but apart fro those you need to spend a lot to get good lense.Micro 4/3 has 14mm 17mm 20mm 25mm 45mm all at reasonable prices

I really enjoy the Olympus OM-D m1. I have the camera and 5 lenses, including both the Oly pro lenses. My full frame camera rides in the trunk of my vehicle. I seldom use it... and... more importantly - I have not needed it for my personal work.

I have seen both cameras and the a6000 is almost OK with me. The sensor is big enough for my liking. (I would like a bigger one.) I like the basic layout. I like the Fujifilm E2 best so far. But I would like a similar layout with a full frame 24X36mm sensor... And the Oly E-M1 has a beautiful grip. It fits my very large hands.

It also has focus stacking. Take a look at their 4.0 firmware update that added a lot of new features to the camera.

I, for one, love how this review started as an run of the mill aps-c fanboy review and it slowly turned into the journey of a man towards loving m4/3

Can't really see the point of testing cameras when you don't know about the functions.

Franco - I use the OMD em5 II in the studio for product photography and architectural photography because its very color accurate and that 64mp raw. I use the a6000 for wedding photography, underwater photography, video (all of my KZread videos are made with it) and fast action where af is needed. I use an A7r for landscape photography and portraits but I only use manual lenses with it.

Did you check your jpeg settings on the Olympus? There are many choices and settings. Maybe that's it.

You're giving wrong information. Double DOF is related to FF, not APS-C. So f/2 equals to f/4 in FF terms, not APS-C. Comparing to APS-C, it should be f/3.2.

Do you still agree with your ending comment that you can't get the depth of field that you want from the 4/3 sensor? I'm looking for my first interchangeable lens camera and thinking the a6000 or the OMD-EM5. Just going to use it for casual shooting and travel. Is the Olympus worth 2X the money ? Maybe it's not really 2X the money when you start to factor in lens cost, as I own none today.

+Brian Weaver Yes and no on my comment. Check out my latest video explaining sensor formats. For a casual photographer I would totally recommend micro 4/3rds. I love my OMD EM5-II and its now my primary studio camera. I will buy an OMD whatever next year as a second camera for that system. I have them both and I still prefer Olympus. Correction! Olympus OMD EM1 AF is faster from A6000 and it also hunts less in dim lights. Yes, video is much better on Sony a6000

At 5:42 you mention using external mics on the A6000 relying on the hot shoe. Can you help me understand what you mean and which mics you are using? I am very interested in an A6000 but really want to use my Zoom H5 for recording. I am new to all this, but as far as I can tell, to use my H5, I would need to simply start recording on each device and sync the audio and video in post. Is that correct? Is there another option? I saw a Sony external mic but the mics I have would still be better quality from all I have read and heard. Anyways, any thoughts and clarification on how to use external mics with the A6000 would be much appreciated. Thanks!

With Olympus flash, like FL-600R, you can use FP mode to enjoy the sync speed with 1/4000 sec.

thanks. i'm looking for a MILC for sports photography (mountain biking). i'm thinking about A6000 and Olympus E-M10 II. but i can't decide. A6000 has faster AF (and very good tracking), Oly looks nicer :) (maybe bigger selection of lenses). but also it's hard to find wide (and not expensive) lens for Oly (because of the crop 2x)

Since you only had your hand on the Oly for 20min, why on Earth would you proceed do a comparison. I think I'll unsubscribe now.

Enough with the 2x crop, crap. m43 IS NOT a cropped sensor. It is it's own system, like 35mm. Or are you going to say that 35mm is a cropped sensor from Medium Format? No, it is not. 35mm got it's digital "Full Frame" name because when digital came about, they were using 35mm lenses on small size sensors such as the APS-C and that's how they got their name "cropped sensor". Olympus and it's 4/3 sensor made the system from scratch when they introduced their digital line up of cameras and lenses. Lenses specifically designed to fit the sensor. Yes it is smaller, but no, it is not cropped in any way.

I totally agree with you. I din't care for m43 at first but you watch my channel you will know I now fully embrace it. The em1 mark II is my daily.

The Olympus is a beautiful camera. Love the placement of the video record button and moisture resistant to boot. But when it comes down to image quality 24mp APS vs 16mp 4/3rds there is no contest. If Only i could put the a6000 inside the OM-D body! ;o)

I would've bought into Olympus or Panasonic's system if they had an apsc size sensor. I guess they invested too much into m43. Samsung is doing some interesting stuff and it helps that they know how to integrate an intuitive touch screen.

you can get good DOF with MFT cameras,if all depends on the lens.so the factor is price of cam+ lens. an a6000+sigma 30mm=750$,panasonic gx7+20mm f1.7=780$..so the MFT combo gives better DOF(aps-c crop is only 0.75fstops better than MFT) ..this is my biggest confusion confusion,i like the bigger sensor and better sensor tech of sony,but MFT has awesome cheap lens

I works easily enough. You can set the number of pictures and the lapse between them. And you can set the output. For instance, a 24p video. It also is possible to set the kind of scene, sunset, moving clouds etc. It is extremely easy

I grabbed a new OM-D EM-1 for $609 on Ebay today. :) Bought it because it does in camera focus stacking and I'm lazy.

hi David. i bought a second hand XE2, e-M10ii, a6000 and x100s (too compare) I'm know ditching two or three. but hard to choose. First i liked the XE2 most, but know i realise that i really love the IQ of a6000. Maybe i will keep the a6000 and the x100s. What would your thoughts be? Also when i keep the a6000 what lens would be ideal? i now have the kit lens 15-50, which is a good reach, but looking for upgrading on quality. Or maybe ditch all four and buy ....?????

Man that's tuff. Since this video I have become a huge MFT fan, better glass at half the price but xe2 and the a6000 are great for af video. Not a fan of the x100s. maybe ditch them all and get an a6300. They will be cheaper next week.

its tuff....indeed! Everywhere people are choosing xt1 over their Sony at least where I'm surfing... Then I'm thinking "but what is the IQ difference between xt1 /xe2." I want to believe xt1 IQ is better. And if m43 is that good, could my em10-2 match a xt1 when I put a 14-40/2.8 on the oly?

If you are into zooms then definitely look more towards Fuji, MFT is really meant for primes. They really need some f2 zooms to make it work. Image quality between the xt1 and the xe2 is just about the same.

Hi, i've got the a6000, too. When I put an on camera Flash on it, i can speed up to 1/250 sync speed. With the build in Flash, i don't know. I don't use it.

***** It really depends on the flash. some make it to 250 because they have a longer duration time while emitting light.

I need help I want to invest in a camera intended to buy the a6000 want to study photography but which can not buy

RE: Flash Xsync speed on EM1, my understanding is that, officially, 1/320 is only with a little flash that comes with the camera, and it is back to 1/250 with any other flash (in regular, not high sync mode).

On the OM-D 5mII the regular shutter does 400 with a generic flash but only 200 on silent shutter mode. Plug a Yongnuo into the PC port on the front of the camera and the Yongnuo fires at 500th of a second with the fp shutter.

Hey David! I had an a6000 that I left on my car roof and it died :( I am looking to either get another a6000 or possibly an M1. I've thrown the idea around of getting a Sony A7 as well. I shoot weddings, events, concerts and I did enjoy the rapid boost of the a6000. I didn't expect to have to shell out cash but I have a seller offering $800 for the Sony A7. What move would you make? I have a friend with an M5 and I am very intrigued. Thanks for your time and help!

The a7 is a very good camera. Just solid. for $800 I would dive on it. But here's the thing, micro 43 with good glass is just awesome for weddings and events because they are so light! m43 glass is also typically sharper wide open.and the lenses cost less. But I really prefer m43 in the field and my A7r when shooting people in the studio and video with my a6300..

Thanks for the quick response. Your answer has been the best so far. I do like the M1 because of the microphone jack as well. I loved how sharp the a6000 was, but I am very intrigued by m43. I've seen some shots and have used the M5 and I think its great. The price is awesome too. So one more question - between the m1,m5, and m10, which would you choose?

The em10 II is a good camera. The em5 II has high res mode. em1 has phase detection af and weather sealing, They all have in body stabilization. The original em10 and em5 are a little dated but still good. I prefer the EM5 II.

He cant get the shallow depth of field on the OMD??? I got Bokeh for days with my OMD MK5II using the prime 45mm.

problem is that most of this so called experts dont know use cameras. Olympus has great great cameras and if you use your brain you can get better results than any sony camera.

is a 12mm m43 lens equivalent to 16mm focal length on apsc

basically yes.

You could say that the olympus has a crop factor of ''1.3' compared to the a6000. 33mm/f3.5 on a6000 would be like 25mm/f2.7 on an olympus. A shorter length with the same size opening.

I hope the next iteration of A6000 have better body because it feels cheap after holding GH4 or this Olympus including the controls.

j simon Its a toss up. They both have fast af and fast fps. The EM1 is images stabilized but that shuts off when you burst. The a6000 body is far cheaper but the 70-200 f4 is expensive. Em1 costs more but a good telephoto is less then Sony. Basically you can flip a coin.

Actually, on the A6000 you can purchase a time lapse app I believe from the Play Memories Store.

Windows Photo Viewer is bad rendering large pictures. You can't see the true sharpness from it unless the image resolution matches or less than the native screen resolution. It's bad to view large resolution pictures.

1:25 Not the largest sensor you can get in a mirrorless mount, as you call it. The Sony A7 line is full-frame...

***** Not actually so. You can get pseudo-Medium Format like Phase One that doesn't have the mirror. Or if you want the Full Frame (not the Full Marketing Frame like 35mm) then you can go and pay a lot to get 8x10" Large Format (at least two backs exists as custom build to replace the photographer polaroids but not the film). So The Full Frame is 8x10" and THE crop format that is still the 35mm sensor is just a tiny one. If person can't afford to buy a Full Frame because business isn't so good, then that person can buy a next best thing, a Medium Format. And if business isn't so good to afford that, then The Crop format aka 35mm is next available thing. Or if portability, speed, image quality is wanted to be in best balance, m4/3 is the best choice then. Allows to do great 60x40" prints with great image quality, or about 40x30" with excellent quality for fine art, all from "tiny 16mpix sensor". If people just would remember that 135 format is nothing than a crop format that no serious photographer until DSLR wanted to use if not requiring a portability (journalists and street photography) or fast frame rates with motor backs (sports photographers) . Fashion, Art, Studio, Landscape etc were shot with Medium and Large formats. And yet we see in different forums etc how people argue how 4/3 sensor being 2 times smaller than The Crop format (35mm) and it is like world ending difference, in reality with negligent difference (between 2/3-1.3 stop noise quality), while 35mm fans just don't want to even think about digital "Medium" or Large format cameras that trash all their egoistic praise for quality from 35mm. :)

Lavikka Photography A600 isn't so tiny either. The m4/3 system is far smaller than any APS-C camera. like example GM1/GM5 vs A6000 or M3. You can't really make system camera smaller than GM1 to compromise even more the size. Take GM1 with Panasonic 7-14mm f/4, 12-32mm f/3.2-5.6 and 35-100mm f/4-5.6 and you have so tiny system camera that makes A6000 or M3 with any objective to look huge. If you want smaller, get Nikon 1 system but you are there again compromising the size, and example Nikon 1 J1 is larger body than GM1 is, but the used objectives really are already similar sizes. The A7 bodies are tiny, but as we talk about camera and not just camera body, the camera is big because objectives being so big, not much larger than ones designed for APS-C. The handling is the current limiting factor, where m4/3 system hits the optimal size.

APS-C is NOT the largest sensor sizie you can get in a mirrorless mount ... not even on 12.03.2015

This review clearly favors and biased towards Olympus, period... But you forgot to test one important thing - Continuous Autofocus for sports action. I watched Gary Fong's video where he easily demonstrated how the A6000 locks focus and could track a fast moving subject, plus the fact that the Sony could zero in an eyeball regardless of how the baby subject moves her head from side to side. Can the Olympus EM 1 do this? Because if not, I'd better off buying the A6000 for my first mirrorless cam at half the price for fashion show/ ramp photography and studio portraiture.

Video - Sony Stills - Olympus And don't give me the tech data re sensor size, DR etc. A lot of this is marketing, but yes, larger sensors do have some advantages - but not as much as they make you believe. Also for me, the form factor of em-1 is important.

I have the a6000 but I have just added the e-m1 to my list and acquire it for macro work. I find it really hard to do focus stacking on the a6000, which is a newly added feature of the e-m1 (firmware v.4.0).

I've always thought the bigger the sensor the better.

Actually on FP mode on the fl600 it will do 8000 on camera

Gee! wouldn't been great if Lavikka had actually had experience with the camera (Olympus) before he compares it to a camera he has lots of experience with (Sony). I respect your opinion after you have gained some real world experience with the Olympus. Short-cut reviews where you just picked up the camera for the first time is just that, short-cut review.

Ability to have lenses focus clockwise or counter-clockwise (Oly)

While I very much like the EM1, it seems to me you missed the boat and should have gotten the brand new EM5 mark II instead. It's smaller, cheaper but share most of the same key features as the EM1 (except for PDAF, deeper grip and extra customizable buttons). The highlight feature of the EM5 II is the 40MP mode which would benefit your studio photography. I'm a bit baffled by your lens choices too. Why on Earth do you have a travel super zoom on the EM1? Sure, it might be convenient on a trip but all this talk of studio photography and to me it looks like one of many, many fine primes on m43 would be much better towards that end. Some of the high-end, f2.8 zooms are mighty nice too.

Lavikka Photography Your first mistake in PP is using anything but DxO Optics Pro 10. Adobe Lightroom is terrible at Olympus & Fuji RAW files. You need to come see me at leighmiller.zenfolio.com...I'll show you what it's al about.

both nice cameras - but for a more serious photographer lenses are important - and when it comes to the E aps-c mount - there are not that many lenses to begin with - no 24-70mm F2.8 and no 70-200mm F2.8 etc Only is 4:3 format vs Sony 3:2 - I kind a like the Lumix GX8 or GX85 or G85 more then both of these - and I have both the EM1 and A6000 - yes Sony has advantage when it comes to image quality - but not by much - I just love the menu system of the Lumix vs Oly or Sony - Lumix has full Touch LCD and Touch To Shoot - the GX8 has a super EVF - the one in the A6000 is not the nice - So I did not own one of the 3 - GX8 A6000 and EM1 I would select the GX8 so so many more lenses to select from in M43 - vs seemingly no more lenses for the Sony E aps-c mount from Sony - which is amazing - For me I get much more shoots out of my EM1 vs the A6000 - both GX8 / GX85 and EM1 both have IBIS and the A6000 does not - but the 35mm and 50mm F1.8 Sony lenses do have iS - Now the A6000 is the least expensive - Focus speed for stills is best on the Lumix GX85/GX8 - especially in low light - then the EM1 and A6000 quite similar Lumix GX8/85 both do 4K video - and 4K modes like post focus - but it is usually the same - Lumix is considered the bastard child of the business - after Samsung got out - before Samsung was it - even though at the end they made super cameras

I thought you were doing an equal comparison of both products, but you only listed the pros and cons of the Olympus near the end. Was a little disappointed about that. I also feel like you had less negative to say about the Sony vs. the Olympus, but you didn't explain very clearly why you favored the Olympus over the Sony. Can you clarify?

+drawitoutlady Shorty after this video though I did buy an OMD EM5 II which is now my main studio camera because of it 64mp raw and nearly perfect color accuracy. I also own the em1 as one of my carry cameras. after 7 months I can tell you Sony does better video and the 24mp has slightly better dynamic range but Olympus glass is way better. Olympus also works better with strobes.

I just purchased the a6000 and am trying to figure out if I made the right choice. I purchased it for multiple things, but I'm especially interested in macro, product shots, and art shots/mockups. Video is a big bonus.

You didn't make a mistake. The a6000 is an awesome camera and the only major flaws are the hotshoe. It's a dumb design and the fact that you can't easily move spot focus.

For the JPEG you have to ( must ) turn Noise filter on LOW or Off Section E ( Exp(ISO) and than Noise filter on LOW or OFF next thin that will improve your jpeg and RAW is set ISO on LOW ( not 200 which is default ) and last 14-150 is piece of shit, use 12-40 or 45 F/1.8 or 25 f/1.8 or use 4/3 lens on E-M1 he was made for tham thay are cheap now so use 12-60 f2.8-4 and 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 E-M1 is great camera you just need to get use to it and know how it works and than you can get excelente image and that direct from JPEG because Olympus have best JPEG engine/image proc. on market..

please take the fact of lens into account, try 12-40 2.8.

1/400 flash is nice and using cheap flashes is. Problem, using base ISO 100 you get the same at 1/200 with a6000. oh and with same depth Of field stop down one stop. or just use a cheap HSS system. its funny to go and try sell mft AS better for flash. the dealbreaker is the lack of godoxsupport for me, but if you want flash a bigger Sensor is always more flexible. cause you can stop down more with good sharpness or shallow dof .

Why the em1? That thing is much more expensive than the a6000. Why not the em10?

Shouldn't you compare the Olympus against the Sony 7 mk2?

Thanks for the useful information. Others reviewers said that JPEG-s out of OM-D E-M1 are so good that for the first time they don't need to shot RAW anymore.

I just hate it when people slide their bodies around on tables like that.

So, Sony sensor = win Olympus = everything else

Sony wins for video and image quality and speed but the shutter on the Olympus is excellent along with the build quality and the stabilization. 16mp just isn't enough.

Lavikka Photography I think 16mp is enough for 90% of photographers out there, pros or amateurs. Unless you pixel peep, you will never be satisfied with the megapixel race. It would be much better if they improve on the dynamic range, noise performance on mft or aps-c rather than have a higher megapixel count. Me personally, factors such as lens cost, size and weight pretty much sums up the reason I gave up on my A6000 (comparing lens size and weight for equivalent 35mm - mft vs aps-c). Actual real world use both will almost give you the same result with a very slight advantage on the APS-C and by advantage I mean if you pixel peep. MFT was designed to give you a smaller form factor (including lens size - which takes much of the space) without sacrificing image quality. And the A6000 fails to give that with it's lens line up as big as the old APS-C lens. If I were to go to a higher megapixel camera, I'd skip Sony APS-C and jump to an E-mount Full Frame. Personally, it makes no sense to me to have a smaller body with the same big lens which by the way takes up much of the weight of your gear.

how can u compare these two mirror less, alpha 6000 is half of the price of Olympus OM-d, under these price alpha 6000 deliver awesome technology as compared to high -end DSLR. Myself using Alpha 6000,, deliver mind blowing outcome. If U want to compare then relate with Sony Alpha 7 R or 7 S.. Sony is the King of Mirror less line up. No one can compete with it..

Olympus looks lovely but at over 1000 euros insanely expensive, you could get a Fuji XT-1 for the same money. I know several pro photographers who use the XT-1, would any pro use the Olympus and its pissy little sensor? Doubt it. Price/performance wise the A6000 is blowing everything out of the water,

+Saurat Image quality of this Olympus is wonderful. Don't buy into the belief that micro 43 isn't pro capable. I've been in this business since 1986 and feel comfortable using Olympus and Panasonic m43 for all my stills and video pro work. Got tired of the size of Canon gear. Not to fault Canon, as they make great gear, too.

The Sony has a poor lens line up. While you can use Panasonic or Olympus lens

When you do reviews try to reference the camera by their name or manufacturer. You kept saying "this guy" or "that guy" and it gets a little confusing. Also - you didn't do much of a review/comparison of the Sony at all. It was clear you really just wanted to like the Olympus and you focused on the Olympus 75%+ of the time. That is OK - just not really an unbiased comparison (if that was your intent).

gotta mention it all. for flash faster sync is nice. a base ISO of 160 or 200 is not! neither is no proper compatible system. no godox. also max shutter counts( got no clue).

someone understand this part 19:15 ... omg lame reviewers everywhere !!
