E-M1 (with the 12-40 2.8) has been my main camera since 2015. It never missed a beat and looks almost new, despite heavy use. I have no intention of replacing it any time soon. Balanced is the word, you are very right about that🙂

I have two of the original E-M1's, both purchased slightly used in their original boxes at under $300 USD each. I have the 12-40 f2.8 Pro zoom, which is one of my all-time favorite lenses in the course of 50 years in photography. I originally had an E-M5, and it was a remarkable camera, but to me, not quite in the same class as the E-M1. I did find the E-M5 to be an outstanding travel camera with the 17mm f1.7 lens on it. My first E-M1 now lives with the 12-40 on it permanently, while my second one is for all sorts of other lenses I have laying around, using adapters, mostly for fun. I get a big kick out of using my old manual focus Nikkors on it, which become image stabilized when used on the Olympus. Since I grew up in the era before autofocus was invented, using manual focus lenses is simply not a problem for me, and the focus magnifier feature on the E-M1 makes this a snap, even with my aging eyes. I have found that if one does not have to have the very latest tech, you can own very good gear at a significant savings. I'm now looking at getting an E-M1 Mark II now that prices on them are dropping on the used market. But I'm torn between doing that, or putting the money into a second hand 40-150mm f2.8 Pro lens. I have the far less expensive 40-150mm f4-5.6 now, and it is an outstanding lens, especially for the price.

I bought my E-M1 in 2013 with the 12-40 F/2.8 PRO and am still loving it every time I use it! I added the amazing 40-150 F/2.8 PRO and very recently the beautiful 45mm F/1.2 PRO! (it takes me awhile to save up for these Pro lenses 😁) Before the E-M1 I was shooting with the Four Thirds E-500 with the 14-42 version II kit lens. The E-M1 mk II or III may be in my future but I'll probably add more m.zuiko lenses first. I agree with you - love the high quality feel of the buttons and dials, the beautiful appearance of the camera and lenses and loved all the firmware updates every few months. I also love the way Olympus has taken care of me as a customer! I also added an Olympus TG Tracker and voice recorder just over a month ago!

I should add the amazing IBIS, improved upon in newer models but still terrific in the E-M1. In the 4/3rds period many users started buying second-hand Konica Hexanon lenses, dismantling and modifying them to focus on the 4/3rds bodies. I'm shot Konica SLRs in the film era and didn't want to modify my Hexanon lenses. I wrote to Sony when they bought Konica-Minolta to find out if my old Konica lenses would work on the new Sony bodies. They said no - different mount . But once I bought the E-M1, I was able to buy an adapter and use all six of my old AR mount lenses on a digital camera for the first time! The addition of these lenses gave me more to work with in the beginning but as good as some of those Hexanon lenses were back then, I haven't used any in years as the M.Zuiko lenses are that much better.

When the E-M1 was launched, Olympus made a demo tour through Germany. For demonstrating the AF capabilities they showed a ballet dancer on a trampoline. The E-M1 rocked this with it's AF, while other people's cameras, even DSLRs didn't match quite well. This made a big impression to me. 2014 I bought my E-M1 and I'm still happy with it. Love to take photos in the rain when other photographers put their cams in their bags. And of course I love the features like Art Filters (Yes, I like them), silent shutter or Live Composite.

Excellent video Robin! For about 5 years I was rocking the EM5 happily and sadly some months ago it finally died on me. So there I was in the situation wondering whether I should pick up another EM5 or not. Then luckily on FB marketplace I saw a lightly used EM1 with M Zuiko 17mm 1.8 going for $500 AUD. I was so surprised at how well built it was, the great in hand feel/ergonomics and the overall joy I had taking photos with it. I think even today in 2021 it's still a fantastic performer and will be so for years to come.

Really enjoyed this video. Olympus was the first and so far only digital camera system I've used. I started with the E-300, which had a non-standard mirror movement. It worked great for what it was. It had a CCD sensor which delivered marvelous colors, and I was quite happy with the images I got with this camera. Eventually I upgraded to the E-520 and then E-5 and kept adding lenses. I was skeptical of the mirrorless E-M1 when it was announced, but wanted a camera with better stabilization and noise reduction, so I somewhat reluctantly got the E-M1. My opinion quickly changed! I felt like the E-M1 reinvigorated my photography and I'm still using the camera. I didn't upgrade to the E-M1 M2, but along with a number of other respondents, I'm waiting with anticipation for the Mark 3 version. One other thing that I think Olympus got right was the introduction of the F1.8 prime lenses. There seemed to be a really good value in the 17mm, 45mm, and 75mm F 1.8 primes in my opinion. While I realize that the prices of these lenses have been criticized by some reviewers, the combination of size, weight, and image quality of these lenses, coupled with their ruggedness and good build quality makes them a good option, if you need a more affordable lenses, or if you don't absolutely need the weather sealing or F1.2 aperture of the Pro lenses at these focal lengths. The F1.8 lenses don't come with lens hoods, which is a drawback, but apparently there are more affordable non-Olympus options. I've made a number of photographs that I'm very happy with using my Olympus cameras and have never run into limitations with the cameras. If one of my pictures isn't as good as it could have been, the fault has been with the photographer, rather than the camera or lenses. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and thoughts!

Thanks for sharing your photogaphy journey and I appreciate your kind words. Indeed I was like you too, when E-M1 came out I was also quite skeptical. E-M5, as great as it was, I was not yet convinced and was still using my DSLR. E-M1 somehow managed to tip the balance over and convinced me to switch over to mirrorless completely.

I use 2 x E-M1's and absolutely love them. On one body I leave either the Nikon Ai 300mm ED manual focus lens, or the AI-S 180mm ED manual focus lens. I have a 2x TC too for either of them. This creates a monster of a camera with amazing range. On my other body I switch between my wide zoom or a 30mm macro. I am 100% satisfied with using these bodies today and I have no intentions to "upgrade" - as my images won't change in quality enough to me to justify the cost to get more expensive bodies. Now....if I could afford the Olympus 300mm F4 Pro, I'd upgrade to that in a hot second!

I replaced my E-M5 mk II with it, there's almost no performance difference between both cameras (except no high res mode on the E-M1) but the E-M1 handling is vastly superior the E-M5.II ; I love it.

My E-M5 Mk I is broken a little bit. It might be repairable, but all this time I am a little bit busy to go to the service centre to check how much is the repair cost and whether the spare part for the faulty component is still available or not. Coincidentally, there was a sale to clear the stock of the E-M5 Mk II last week, so I took the opportunity to buy it. I decide to go for E-M5 Mk II even though the E-M5 Mk III is already around because I just want something cheap and don't require anything with high tech at the moment. If my older E-M5 Mk I is still repairable at an affordable cost, I will repair it and use it as a secondary camera.

Still using my E=M1 and 12-40 Pro lens and they take great pictures but the camera has developed the rear knob skipping illness and will need to go back to Olympus for repair, bummer. Great camera other than that, really like the tilt screen versus the articulating screens on the Mk 2 & 3.

Robin please ask Olympus to add back the wonderful tilt in axis screen of the Em1 mk1 to all future Em1 models. Panasonic and Fuji get that photographer's want an in axis tilting screen. Videographers want a flippy screen. The Em5 line can be for them with flippy screen, but the Em1 should go back to an in axis. Hopefully Olympus will think about this and add it.

@@robinwong My apologies. I did a search of your videos and did not come up with a result. On the sales statement, I meant if people knew of this night shoot feature they might be inclined to buy one, (no other company has this feature that I know of). Having a link for these cameras could earn you commissions at no cost to the buyer. People go into business to benefit others and be rewarded in return. Nothing dishonest about that.

Never knew EM1 has Focus Stacking via an upgrade of firmware. I need to check mine as Focus Stacking could be very useful in my macro shooting. Thanks for letting me know that and one question: Should I worry about any upgrade-related issues that you see with other companies as I know in some lines (Not Olympus) while firmware upgrade you can turn your electronic into a brick! Then; Do you have any clip-on prepared way to upgrade the software to the latest? Thanks for all the great content on top of your great passion for a great product, Olympus.

Very interesting video Robin. Thank you! The E-M1 was the camera I had the longest and love the most, also taken most shots with, over 25000. I had the silver version first, then part exchanged it for a black version with 12-40, 40-140 pro lens kit. I really do regret selling it for the Lumix G9, but thank goodness now back with the E-M1 II. I still miss the E-M1, so maybe I will get a good used one someday.

One thing for shure Is that i prefer an old professional body rather than the last consumer one, due to a better amount of direct functions. What would you suggest me between the em1 Mark 1 and em5 Mark 2? My other option due to the direct functions, would be a fuji xt1... I Hope you understand my approach, and the reason why I choose an old top camera... Thnaks a lot

Hi Robin, I own and use the EM-1 and agree with you on what is covered in the video. I also own the E-M10 M2 and for some reason prefer it over the EM-1, thinking it has more to do with the electronic view finder on the OM-10 M 2 since it is a newer model and also the built in flash if needed. The size of the camera and lenses make it my camera of choice for all day use. Curious how do you think the EM-! original compares to the EM 10M2? Plus I like the ability of using my vintage film OM lenses n the Olympus digital to this day with out having to spend a small fortune to get auto focus and a newer lenses.

I've been thinking of upgradeing later in the year to EM mark 2, what's you thoughts? is the extra cost of the upgrade justified. I find the EM-1 batteries don't last long, have five so I don't run out of power, which is the downside to this model. I mostly do Macro the Olympus is way better than the canon I used to use. Thanks for all your very informative vlogs👍

The E-M1 mark II is a huge step up from the original E-M1. One E-M1 Mark II's battery lasts as long as 3 or more E-M1 original's battery. Everything has been improved, image quality, AF, EVF, overall performance.

Olympus m4/3 system is good , but I think it is quite silly to make big camera like OM-D E-M1X, since it make no sense to make big camera for m4/3 small sensor. Olympus should make its own full frame camera just like Panasonic. All other camera company have at least two lines, big sensor for big body and lens, small sensor for small body and lens.

Hi Benny, initially I had similar emotion. Why such big camera for m4/3? But after thinking it made some sense to me. E-M1X is Pro oriented camera, extra size is coming from grip which is filled with batteries gives sport photographers a long shooting time without need to worry about running out of juice. Personally I would not carry E-M1X but I am not a professional photographer. At the same time I went to Olympus service center and tried one. OMG! It fits my hand perfectly, landscape, portrait orientation, 40-150, 45/1.2, they sit amazingly well with E-M1X. If you take a big Canon or Nikon body, attach grip to it plus 24-70 and try to do 3hrs shooting with it you will feel it. How heavy and painful it will get at the end. I saw review from wedding photographer who did 5hr shoot with E-M1X and he couldn't believe how painless it was. So, I think there are a good reason for its existence but of course it is not for everyone.

  • @robinwong

    @robinwong

    4 жыл бұрын

In the DSLR, the distance between the lens and image sensor is bigger due to mirrorbox between them. To use DSLR lens on mirrrorless body which has no mirrorbox, you need to add an adapter to increase the distance between the sensor and the lens. This does not work the other way around. You cannot shorten the distance of the mirrorless lens when used on DSLR. You will have to destroy the mirrorbox and force the lens into the camera!
