2 precious ladies who will always draw a tear from me. As a little boy I had such a huge crush on both of them. In my late teen years, I met Olivia through someone I knew. That person told her about the abusive life I had to grow up with. Olivia was the first person to say "I love you" to me and the only person to ever tell me I mattered. She made me sit on the left corner of a stage during one of her local concerts. She sat next to me with her hand on mine when she sang, "I honestly love you." I melted and my eyes teared up so bad I couldn't even see. You will always be alive in my heart Olivia.

I met Karen in October 1976 at our dentist office in Downey California! She was gorgeous and generous with her time talking to a very big fan of 24 years old!¡ What a day! My friends Todd and Chris worked at Gemco >n Downey and met Karen and Richard a few times when they both shopped there!

Olivia was very good but Karen Carpenter was singing perfection, its just at the time we didn't realize it. The tones, the breath control, the crystal clear enunciation of the words, the ability to sing soft or loud or slow or fast but always in control never yelling, the whole package Karen Carpenter was so great.

I don't think its an exaggeration to say Karen is the best female pop singer to come from the US. As magnificent as she is/was, I classify Barbara Streisand as a Broadway singer though she charted many times. ONJ is my favorite songbird voice. Her tone is so pure. There's plenty of reasons to hold them all in the highest esteem.

@@jerrynkathy Streisand was fantastic, kind of a Broadway singer/actress as she kind of tells a story with her singing. Streisand could have probably been an opera singer. Streisand pretty much retired when she was still in her prime as she had done it all by then. I really admire people who can reach the top and voluntarily back away and enjoy their life like a normal person. Karen Carpenter was a musician who could sing crazy good. There are many videos of her singing fantastic while playing the drums. I think controlling her breath and holding her notes came from her musician background. I think part of her psyche was that she really wanted to just be a member of the band she did not really crave being the star. Her brother was a brilliant musician/composer but it just worked out that if they wanted to make it big it would require her to be the star singer. ONJ was more of a performer, not the greatest of all time singing voice but good looks, great smiling demeanor and enthusiasm for the audience. They had different strengths.

And to think that Karen used to say that she was a drummer who could sing. She had the richest pitch perfect low tone for a female singer. Remember ' Only yesterday ' . That song sold so well and was continuously in the low notes that Karen once said " The money is always in the basement ". Olivia, was of course the sweetheart of the music world.

Karen was gorgeous and delightful and she was so kind to this 24 year old fan of Karens from Downey also!! Memories are still HUGE when i think of that moment in time! Meaning myself!!! I heard from one neighbor Karen would sometimes ride her bike in the neighborhood and Karen might have an extra cassette she would give to neighbors that she had........good quality people and neighbors who were great people in this Downey community that was lovely and was always dressed up for the Christmas Holidays!!!! Really gorgeous decorating from the entire Downey community!Downey was always the place to go to see Cristmas decorating in Southern California from even the 50s!!!! People had to turn their low beams on when driving through a decorated neighborhood in Downey! Merry Christmas Darling seemed extra special to all of us from Downey in 1970 because of Karen and Richard living on Newville St.......This song could not have had more meaning to all of us from the neighborhood! The lyrics having been written 30 years before the music was created by Richard Carpenter after he asked his music teacher at Long Beach State if he had any music lying around and he said he did! Frank Pooler had written the lyrics to Merry Christmas Darling in the 40s and Richard wrote the music!!!! Imagine writing the music to this song so soon after they became famous.....NO ONE COULD HAVE SUNG THIS SOULFUL TUNE BETTER THAN KAREN AT 20 YEARS OLD.....NO ONE !!!! I think honestly this was the most beautiful gut wrenching soulful musical arrangement Richard has ever created!! We saw Richard and Karen sing this song in November 1978 at Long Beach State terrace Theater!!! I was so excited to see them sing this song in person I could have screamed out loud!!!! So gorgeous in person to see them sing this song at what would be their last LIVE PERFORMANCE EVER! My step sister Andrea worked at the dentist office and would tell me when Karen or Richard was in to see Dr. Gozlin for cleaning! One time Karen told my step sister that performing all over the world is "hard on me" Karen's exact words out of her mouth! When Andrea told me what Karen had said my heart sank! I just knew something wasn't right! I had a feeling! I don't know........I didn't like hearing that! A and M had the biggest recording artists in the United Statesand they were making money when Karen and RICHARD were traveling and performing over 250 days a year!!! A and M ARE TO BLAME FOR KARENS ILLNESS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND......TERRIBLE TRAGEDY LOSS AND LOSS OF A LOVELY HUMAN BEING ! I WILL NEVER GET OVER loosing Karen! While I listened to this unforgettable song like this, I still thinking both of hers were still alive. How beautiful their voices are!

She was one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet in your life, like everyone always said she was! ! They actually did in a way. In 1980, Olivia did her ABC TV Special called Hollywood Nights where they, Toni Tenille, Peaches from Peaches & Herb and Tina Turner did "Heartache Tonight" and thanks to Olivia Tina Turner met her Manager at the time Roger Davies. He took Tina on as a client and helped her make the biggest comeback in pop music next to marvin gaye. Karen had anorexia while Olivia's daughter Chloe had it as well. God Bless them both.

In 1980 when Olivia did her Third TV Special for ABC called Hollywood Nights, they Toni Tenille, Peaches from Peachses & Herb and Tina Turner did their version of Heartache Tonight. They were thick as thieves. In fact Karen was supposed to visit Olivia at her house but she died on the day of the proposed visit. Olivia attended her funeral and was an honorary pallbearer. Now the two friends are singing in heaven.

What a wonderful blending of 2 of the most beautiful voices. I am big fan of both Karen and Olivia. I did not know Olivia had recorded Close to You. When I saw this on KZread I was expecting to hear Karen singing, then Olivia, then Karen again, etc. and not the beautiful blending of their voices. Fortunately the timing/tempo of the recordings are similar. It really sounds like they sang together. Thank you for putting this together along with the nice photos.

Wow! Just saw this! I've been waiting for someone to put Livi's tribute with Karen's vocals. Thinking about it is one thing but hearing it and seeing these great photos made the tears flow! Lots of memories. Livi had an angelic voice and my big sis very often played her albums in the house. Karen's albums were played nonstop by the both of us and I'm still listening daily to Karen.Sis listens to Carpenters channel on Sirius. 2 angelic voices now together in heaven.Thank You so much for doing this and posting this!
