I'm disappointed about Dodger not being a kid. And there I was, just moments away from choosing this as my favorite adaptation of Oliver Twist. D:

If I was able to do it, I would have had Tom Felton for the Artful Dodger.

The little person, was simply a possible traveling performer, whom anyone could have met on in between a town I suppose, and Fagin was most likely good at all manner of slight of hand, as he taught his 'children' the craft of picking pockets... ....Oh, and Marc Warren truly, truly stole this entire film, and every scene he was in...

Fagin always reminded me of Clopin. this portrayal enforces that.

Clopin ran a circus, he gave Gypsies and performers a safe haven. Fagin harboured Criminals, he was a Criminal himself Please don't compare the two again

@ Remi & Kay: The dwarf is a combination of Oliver's friend Dick (the "God bless you" part) and, if I'm remembering correctly, a man near the end of the novel who shows everyone Sykes's blood stained hat. As for Fagin being a magician, it's Bleasdale's attempt to give Fagin more of a back story, as well as add a bit more flare to him.

I don't think Oliver would follow Dodger if he was an adult Dodger :/

How is Mr Bumble's wife connected to Oliver's grandfather (the sailor)? Was she the sailor's wife, or sister - and therefore Oliver's grandmother, or great Aunt (although she doesn't know it)? I am very confused.

14anila14 In my opinion this version and the 1985 versions of Oliver Twist were the closest to the book compared to the 2 to 3 hour movie versions.

Okay... this is still pretty good, but the artful as an adult??? Half the reason he's so off kilter scary is he's a kid way too experienced for his age. Hate bowdlerization.

Looked forward to seeing this as I love Dickens. V disappointed. Obviously, Dickens is not good enough for Bleasdale. He Dan do better. Fagin as a world renowned magician? Monks' mother? (just an opportunity to use Lindsay Duncan) And of course the inevitable Julie Walters. An insult.
