I watched a lot of OEL in Arizona and he was one of the best d-men in the league in his early twenties. Then he had a couple knee injuries and lost the burst on his skating. This led to him getting beat in transition and on the rush far too often. He's still useful, as he proved last year, and if the plan is for him to play third pair and quarterback PP2, he'll probably do just fine. But if he's asked to do much more than that I think the Leafs will be regretting this contract.

The biggest thing I remember from him in the finals was how he completely gave up on the empty net puck chase that Tkachuk miraculously saved just for McDavid to be able to grab the puck immediately. Ekman-Larsson just strolled around him as if the puck went in, not paying attention to what happened. He had some great moments through the playoffs but that one was pretty bad. Could have maybe had one last chance to tie the game, instead just let McDavid seal it (I mean, it might not have made a difference, it’s McDavid after all, but still). I imagine he felt pretty bad after that too, he definitely owed Matthew an apology.

Sounds pretty reasonable tbh. OEL played well last season and in the playoffs and now signed to a team that has a core of chokers. Maybe him and tanev can change things around there. Even if it could age badly adding very solid defenceman for 3.5 mil has immediate upside. Just because it isn't perfect does not mean it is a bad contract. Just a bummer that these additions probably means Niemelä's chances of making the team are almost nonexistent.

It's possible that Treliving has some inside knowledge about anti-aging research that will deliver results in the next couple of years or he's doing the thing that GMs do in signing deals that will probably be someone else's problem. Florida brought OEL in as a stop gap player to cover for injuries on the blueline and they found that if they kept him as a depth guy he could contribute. For what Florida needed he was great on a short term deal. For what the Leafs need, not so much. Tanev is a great signing, until he gets injured doing what he does best, playing the game harder than his body or just about any body can take. Then he's done and you have a huge hole in your blueline or he comes back swathed in bandages like the mummy and plays like a shell of the man he was until he heals from his latest horrific injury.

The Defence position is a VERY VERY limited position and to land a top tiered player in that position is hard . I understand the term because of the tax purposes, IMO I wouldn’t have signed OEL , and the Leafs cupboards are near empty thanks to the other GM . I feel the NHL and team owners must use the “ No trade clause” with a little more care and MAYBE these top tiered guys would be more available. But what do I know I’m just an arm chair gm like the rest of us . Cheers 🇨🇦

The point at the end about the NMC/NTC's is kinda weak. It would make sense if the Leafs were getting any type of AAV benefit but who out there was offering those same terms to Tanev (didn't even hear a whiff of speculation that he could get 6 years until the Leafs acquired his rights) or OEL (3.5 is more than a fair number for him)? Seems like you're reaching to back up your point about wanting to move off the core 4.
