NOBODY gave a damn about Gymnastics until the GREAT OLGA KORBUT came on to the scene. Her bar routine is the GREATEST performance in history. SHE IS A STAR!!! LOVED, APPRECIATED AND RESPECTED. A GENIUS.

I think you might be selling President Reagan a bit short, but he never seemed like a politician to me. I will absolutely say that seeing people who are supposed to be your enemy or the Bad Guys at the Olympics helped a lot of people my age (Gen X) and possibly our parents understand that no, the people are not our enemies. And that's what the Olympics were really for, especially back then.

Yeah, it was never a spoken thing in my family, and in fact, it was probably mostly subconscious, but we tended to cheer for America always, then Canada if we (the Americans) were eliminated or something, then other English-speaking countries in no particular order, then other Western (capitalist, really) countries, but never the USSR. Olga was the first Soviet athlete that my parents liked and cheered for. I was too little to really care, but my first Olympic crush was Nadia Comaneci, whom my parents didn't like, not because she represented a communist country, but because she beat Olga Korbut. 😄 Olga: the first little thaw of the Cold War.🙂

I think her influence is highly underrated. The modern gymnastics movement really starts with Olga. Right after her Olympics debut, gymnastics gyms started opening up. She inspired a generation of young women and girls. She was a fierce competitor in a small, very attractive package. My sister and 2 of my cousins were allowed to take gymnastics, as a reward for maintaining good grades. One of my cousins got an athletic scholarship. Olga lit the flame. Consider Al of the pressure she must have been under. The world was watching, and she delivered.

I paused at a little TV shop just as Olga Korbut walked up to the uneven bars on a display model in the window. Watching her, my jaw dropped and my heart leapt. I was watching this in real time on television. I was 15 years old. When Olga did the aerial on the beam, when she did the release on bars, the skipping on the floor, all of it, I thought "No one has ever seen anything like this." And I was right. It was breathtaking. When I watch beam work today, yes it's all astounding, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is better than the lovely artistry of Olga's mount, that split & the perfect fluid hand movement punctuating it, and I always think, "Well they may be able to do acrobatics on the beam now, but something has been lost," and I always miss the beauty (I detest Wolf turns), and I always think of Olga Korbut, and Daniela Silivas, my two stars.

Nadia Comanche was the 10. Olga was the 10. No one else compares! Floor, Nadia. Balance beam, Olga. After that, they changed everything. The uneven bars have become boring. The balance beam is boring and the floor bugs me. The guys only show strength, but the girls have to dance. Either the boys should have to dance too or the girls should only have to show strength.
