If you're an LG owner with a history of buying LG OLEDs get the G3. I've bought and eventually returned a S95B and S90c because while the colors were spectacular on the QD OLEDs, overall I preferred LG's upscaling and picture processing to Samsungs. That said the G3, while it does't quite get as bright in color volume as QD OLEDs, it got "close enough" for me. With QD OLEDs you could be watching a show you always watch and someone wearing a yellow shirt pops more than you ever noticed before. While not "quite" as vibrant on the G3 this can type of pop can still be achieved. The secret sauce is in the Fine Tune setting inside the color options. From there you can adjust the amount of Saturation and Luminance on Red, Green Blue, Yellow, Magenta and Cyan. While not as vibrant as it is on a QD OLED when editing the Fine Tune section makes individual colors pop much more than what you've probably noticed on your previous OLEDs. Making adjustments to Fine Tune in additional to the overall HDR brightness of the television and LG's upscaling and processing have appeased my FOMO from QD OLED. If you've got the money to spare and want to switch to Sony go for it, it's probably a great set, but if you're used to the LG OLED ecosystem, you'd be good with the G3. Side Note: If you are a Vivid User you will have to turn down the OLED Brightness to get a better looking image (and still bright). Set it to maybe 65 and work your way up from there if needed. You all may want to consider setting your color to 50 as a starting point and dialing back up as needed.

Judging by the detailed and helpful comment. I would like your advise on my buying decision - Sony A80L vs LG G3 55" sets - i am getting the G3 at a cheaper price than Sony. My usage are mostly watching Netflix, KZread, prime video and high quality HDR content from web - Now I see that Sony A80L has dimmer display overall - but there's a realistic feel when I watch Sony - hesitant to go to a LG, but the price difference and a dimmer Sony A80L is pushing me towards LG G3. I know its compared to A95L and not A80L - A95L is significantly expensive here in India than the LG G3. My question to you is - it seems that LG brightens up everything a lot and sometimes in my opinion - that takes away the cinematic look - do you think LG TVs can be tuned slightly to look more like Sony? PS - I have been Sony only user but thinking to get a LG G3, will try to go to a store but their curated content makes them hard to judge. Thanks in advance for your time in reading and replying (if you do :-)) Have a great day!

First off I want to say I really enjoy your reviews. They are so straightforward and clean cut you’re at the top of my reviewer list. That said, I have the LG 77 G3 and I think the picture is outstanding bright and beautiful. I also have a Sony TV A90K also a great picture, but of course, not as bright as the G3.

Excellent video. Whatever you guys did with your recording was spot on. I can actually see the differences between the two TVs. As others have said, the small advantages the Sony A95L has do not equate to the huge price difference from the G3. Side by side in store, the Sony was a nicer display. It was sharper (perhaps too sharp for some) and definitely brighter with more contrast. However, the build quality/chassis were not as nice as the LG and the LG was only hairs behind the Sony in terms of brightness. In addition, I believe the LG has an edge with gaming and G-sync compatibility, and I trust WOLED tech more than QD-OLED in terms of reliability and burn-in. Got a G3 at a sale price that almost would have let me buy 2 for the same price as 1 A95L at retail price and still 1,500$ cheaper than Sony's black Friday prices. A no-brainer.

I always enjoy your reviews because your opinions are valid pertaining to the pros and cons of products. I have the A90J which I am content with for now and I really can't justify upgrading just for the picture enhancements. The only issue I have with the A90J is that backgrounds that should white are gray which is quite a distraction. The A95L is my choice no doubt if I decide to upgrade. The side by side comparison clearly shows the A95L 's picture quality is far superior than the G3 in my opinion. What I am really interested in pertaining to the A95L is the sound quality because it has been improved and that has to be some feat. The sound on my A90J is off the charts incredible. The only thing it lacks is bass, but once you immerse yourself into what you are watching you don't even notice it. I find myself lowering the volume a couple of times because it seems to get louder over a period of time. I have the complete Bose 900 setup so sound is not a issue. I always set the Bose volume at 21 which is perfect for me but the volume on the A90J does not need to go above 7. It is just that stellar. Excellent review as always.

Even at 55 inch the LG G3 is £1200 cheaper, which means you could also buy the LG and PS5 a Series X and still have some change left over than buying the Sony A95L. In times like this you need to get the best value for money. I think the Sony A95L is for the real movie connoisseur and hardcore TV enthusiast personally.

Excellent review but leaves out a very important point. I am evaluating both an LG G3 and a Sony A95L. Both have brightness limiting algorithms. They're both bright TVs, but the brightness limiting algorithms limit what you can use. This is especially a problem with the Sony which is not as bright as the LG. I may set it to a level that looks really nice and bright, but within 10 minutes the image is dimmed substantially and sometimes you can't even see what you need to see. Why wasn't that addressed in the presentation? I would be interested.

I purchased a 77" G3 at launch. I love the G3 and the number of HDMI 2.1 inputs. I prefer the more natural colors to the digitally enhanced looking color on the QDOLEDS. The color volume on the G3 becomes too saturated for me if I turn the color up past 60, but can look as comparable to the QDOLEDS. I can tweak many options to add more contrast too with the black level adjustments. The G3 also has less chance of image retention than QDOLEDS. Go Buy a PS5 and 5 games for the money you save vs this Sony.

I really enjoyed this review; thank you very much. I have a question concerning professional calibration of both these tv’s. I myself have 2 plasmas still. My Pioneer PDP-LX6090 (which has died now) never needed calibration, since (iykyk) that picture quality is phenomenal out of the box. My Panasonic TX-P55VT60 I was never really satisfied with, because of the colours and brightness … UNTIL I had it professionally calibrated. Just WOW; the difference was phenomenal; after calibration, the tv seemed like an entirely different one. So good. Now to my question: when doing a comparison like you did here, would it not be desirable to do an extra segment in your clip, after you had both tv’s professionally calibrated? I get that is not for everyone, since not everyone will have this done, but isn’t that the only way to find out what any tv is actually capable of? I’m looking to buy a new tv and the guy who did the calibration 2 years back recommended LG OLED at the time, so that’s why I’m scanning KZread now and how I found your video. What’s your take?

However, the Sony is $4k in Canada, and I had a hard time justifying that price. Luckily Costco put the A80K on sale for $1800 in September. I took a chance and it’s plenty bright in my room. @@RobertK1993 That is incorrect. Generally speaking, LG, who have been making OLED panels longer and in much higher volume than any other companies, are the most reliable in terms of burn-in. Those Rtings tests are meant to sift through all the one-off experiences to try and aggregate some unbiased and useful information from hard data. Just because it didn't match your experience does not mean LG TVs are unreliable or debunk the Rtings tests. Owned 3 LG OLEDS now, two of which are over 3 years and 9,000 hours old. I wanted the Sony as I’ve always had one and know what they’re capable of, but the large price gap couldn’t be overlooked. I went with the G3 and love it. I’m sure the A95L would have been better but definitely not anywhere near what it needs to be to justify the price gap. Using a Shield Pro or ATV 4K negates the upscaling differential. Spend the extra cash on a Sonos Arc and Sub and you’ll come out with a better overall package. For what I paid for the G3 in Canada, there is a $1700 price difference between the two TVs. Nuts!

It doesn't negate the upscaling. That's why the Sony is better. It can recognize the input from external devices, negate their upscaling and instead use the Sony upscale processing.

I've always went for "the best performance you can get for the amount of money you want to spend" kind of deal. Sony's top of the line, while tending to be the best out there, also come with such a high price difference from the competition, that they are not good investments. Want premium and money doesn't matter? By all means go for it. But imo LG offers the best deal overall, best quality and performance for money spent, and that's what I went for. Bought one 55" G3 just a few days ago. It's actually still sitting in it's box, unsealed, because (of all things) the table stand has yet to arrive 🤦‍♂ (deliveries around Black Friday are as problematic as ever). Anyway, I got the 55" G3 for ~1380 Euros while Sony's same size A95L was ~2400 Euros in my country - definitely not worth the difference, for me at least. I want an OLED with a higher brightness in HDR than my old LG 48" CX can provide (a TV that resisted heroically 💪for 3 years of very intense use as a PC monitor, especially for work but for gaming too). That's what the G3 can give. It may not be the most color accurate TV, but neither was the CX and I didn't mind it at all. And for the price difference compared to the A95L, I can get a bunch of other stuff for my PC. One more thing to consider especially if you use a TV as a monitor: text clarity. This is where the RWBG panel on the G3 is much better than QD-OLED used by Sony - technology that, due to it's subpixel layout, displays color fringing around texts. RWBG panels are not perfect for text either, they are still not plain old RGB, but I've used the CX for 3 years, with Text Clarity enabled, and it's been very good, with only minor text issues and only in specific scenarios. I'll get to using the G3 in a few days, and see for myself how it fares - here's hoping it's gonna last at least as much as the CX, that, despite it's mileage, is still functioning quite well.

@@michaelwyckoff7593 About Samsung: right before I got the LG CX some 3 years ago, I bought a Samsung Odyssey G9 - the second iteration of the 49" curved screen, the first one with a 1000R radius IIRC . Bought it after reading and watching many stellar reviews on it, that were all chanting how awesome it is. Only to discover the complete opposite. HDR was abysmal mostly because of it's very basic local dimming (6 zones i think), it had random flickering in various instances, the screen emitted loud popping sounds when heating up after power on, or when cooling down after power off, and a few other problems. And no, my monitor actually wasn't an unfortunate rare case, since I found a lot of other similar complains on forums.... after the fact however. But after 4-5 days I got fed up, returned it and got the LG CX - which was an absolute night and day difference. Since then I'm staying away from Samsung displays like a groundhog from the light. Besides, as I mentioned in my post, I'm using the display as a monitor, and QD-OLED displays cause text fringing. QD-OLED is used by Sony - and of course by Samsung since it's the screen manufacturer that Sony actually buys it's displays from. So QD-OLED in general is a no go for me, be that Sony, Samsung or others.

These are split second frame moves, and the TV manufacturers use different algorithms, etc.,. I’d say go with a 65” and use the rest of your cash to buy a nice denon 11 channel AVR unless you already have a receiver. Could always buy more speakers or better yet get power amps for your current setup. I run an 11 channel setup with 4 in ceiling speakers on a denon AVR with multiple power amps. Currently pulling a full 1500 watts off a dedicated 25amp breaker wired just for my audio. A TV is a great buy, but remember that 50% of an AV experience is the audio itself and nothing compares to a full channel setups. Just some food for thought as I prefer smaller clearer displays over larger ones as it allows me to go with a full audio setup.

I've seen both in person, bought a 77" G3 last week and have no regrets. Ratings came out saying that QD OLED is vastly more prone to burn in and G3 came with a 5 year warranty.. UI is customizable and is snappier, 4 HDMI 2.1 ports (for 5k this should be mandatory), Sony has some bugs that it has yet to patch and LG has a good great track record of keeping up with updates (even for really old models).. While it's obvious in person the Sony has a better picture quality I just couldn't justify the 1.5k difference.. If I felt Sony was a better daily driver and going to last for the long haul, that I could trust Sony to issue regular updates. *Maybe* if the A95L comes down in price and the build holds up over time I'll sell my G3. But for now, speaking from someone who isn't made out of money, the G3 is an absolute no-brainer.

Your right its not accurate. I pointed out that at the cost of their motion smoothing enhacement. It's actually ruining the picture of any real elements that should be retained. When you factor in Full Bandwith 2.1 x 4 HDMI, better more stable OS, Google won't last long in Sony TV before it goes the rate of a SNAIL pace. LG gives 5 Year warranty as standard, with panel replacement. Forget the built in sound on the Sony, it's still crap. When you pay money like this for a good tv, you want to be putting proper HiFi sound system with it. Sony didn't even manufacturer the OLED display tech, always partaking in someone elses table, they are in it for the cash grab to steal from someone elses tech parade. There are so many ways to combine non emmisive display tech with other tech. It had to be LG that realized it. They can't even include DV aswell as including HDR10, HDR10+, HGIG like LG can. Despite what people say, Dolby Vision is still the best form most widely used HDR format and its being filmed in by professional directors for most streaming content. LG is more subtle and truthful to source material, LG and Samsung have less motion blur aswell. Sony's processing is not better despite what people think. Their eyes are being deceived by fakery. They only added a fake TAX for it when it doesn't exist. The extra frames their interpolation inserts is innacurate. I prefer LG any day when they don't mess with the picture too much. What Sony are doing is making a cartoon carbon copy then over exagerating what is really their, actually isn't their to begin with.

Sony has better accuracy for sure the details in the back are a lot more clear, but I do love my LG's. I would go with Sony in my room for watching shows and movies at night and LG for a living room since its more daytime watching and gaming! Great review!

You got to be kidding right. It's clear the picture settings on the G3 is dialed down in this comparison video. The difference between the A95l or any Sony TV vs the LG G3 and the C1, is through calibration settings you could make the LG look like whatever brand of TV you like. The Sony TV can not do this. The Sony TV colors are to Cool overall.

@taseti4803 That's not entirely true. All you have to do is switch to Cinema or IMax, and adjust the colors there for a warmer look.

If u could turn off Sony‘s auto-image-enhancement (oversaturation) it would probably deliver the more accurate picture but as u can’t the LG is much closer in showing the image as intended by the Filmmaker. Additionally u could get almost the exact same image (just brighter with more details) looking like the Sony via calibration in the LG settings if u wanted but not the other way around.

According to RTINGS the A95L has the better PQ EOTF Tracking. The only problem with this TV is Dolby Vision which almost no bbrand does correctly other than LG.

2 HDMI 2.1 ports is simply unacceptable at this price point. Overall performance seems so close between the two flagships that I’d personally have a difficult time paying the premium for the Sony. Plus the G3 is also superior wall mounted so that would be my choice if I was going

Lol I’m the same way, I buy a $3-$4K tv every 3-4 years. Realistically it’s dirt cheap and only costs me $1K per year which is less than most peoples cell phones. Technology changes so fast with displays and I have a dedicated theatre room with an 11 channel Atmos setup that includes 4 in ceiling speakers. So yea I like my clean clear displays as I buy a lot of 4K UHD bluray movies. I spend way more time in my theatre room than in my vehicle and 2 months of vehicle payments cost more than my annual tv budget lol. Only live once and you can’t take all that paper with you, spend it and enjoy it is my modo. My basement is full of flat screen from the last 20 years, all in their original boxes. I don’t sell them as it’s not worth it, just a collection like all my consoles from the 90’s till today haha.

Excellent comparison of these two top shelf TVs of 2023. I think it is pretty clear that LG G3 gives the most bank for the buck ! And its picture quality rearely disappoints. If at all !?!? Sony A95L is Sony's flagship model for 2023. I think it is pretty clear that it has the best picture quality of all the TVs we have seen the reviews of so far. But its price is almost prohibitively expesive ! And is not going to come come down any time soon. At least not until Sony announces its TV lineup for 2024. Again: great comparison review !!!

For most people, it will simply come down to price. 1000€ more for the Sony compared to the LG is just too much for the vast majority of consumers. The LG is such a good deal, especially since it gets discounted much more from time to time.

Sony knows their colour science. From TVs to cameras in smartphone. Looking this comparison from a lowly VA (although cal'd) panel is as good as jugging sound quality of equipment from YT video listening with wireless headphones. From where I look the Sony looks to be spot on in tonal balance, colour accuracy etc but the colours are a bit too saturated, aside from the greater colour volume. The contrast is not better but the range of illuminations for colour pixels the QD panels can do is greater. Do some people call it colour contrast? Semantics.
