I was a 16 year old in 2007 and remember this era like yesterday. People just uploaded their videos in the spirit of fun. No overanalyzing. No target demographic or goal in mind. Videos didn’t have the pristine editing and high quality they have now, but they sure were fun to watch. Good times.

Yeah man. i remember it was common to post all of our video school projects, so we could go back and watch it over and over again. They were mostly cringy af but, there was no overthinking, no expectations of “going viral”, no haters, no fear being ridiculed or cancelled. It was just for fun. Kinda crazy to look back at those days and compare it with what YT is now. I really dont think anyone could have foreseen it

The moment money became the incentive, it when KZread fall started. I remember when Ad revenue first started, all the top channels said the same "I don't want ad revenue, because it would make KZread feel like a job" , now all of them make videos with all the ad checkmarks, streched as long as necessary, Tags out the ass, etc. I will never not be upset.

A classic example of a startup tech company business model, people invest for the prospect of future profits, while being a loss leader the platform outcompetes others to eventually become a near monopoly. Given the massive rise in ads the last few years, I think they are trying to cash in.

Small channels are so hard to find, and finding the good channels which are genuine and just make content that they enjoy is like a needle in a haystack. I was just old enough to see a lot of it (born in 1999) and what it honestly reminds me of is modern day meme culture on social media. Just imagine if all of KZread, all of it, were just all those cheap, jank, yet gut-busting skits and such you see on Twitter, formerly Vine, Tik-Tok, etc., accompanied by an occasional passion project with a higher quality like a really good stick fight animation for example. I’d argue to an extent, the type of content that made old KZread great hasn’t necessarily gone away, just that today it’s much more dispersed across different online platforms, and is extremely limited on KZread itself. I should also put forth that the last decade or so of content has definitely influenced how people make content today. I’d wager the average uploader to any social media platform is far more cautious, and self-conscious than a lot of the early, really raw, unedited, unfiltered personalities and videos that started KZread. Smosh, Ijustine, all those early people, they didn’t have a decade worth of online content to model themselves off of, so they weren’t emulating the kind of online archetypes we have today.

Old youtube was great because they made their content for fun, most KZreadrs now just want money and fame. But smaller KZreadrs are usually more genuine because they’re not making much if any money so they do it mainly for fun. I guess that’s where the old slogan “Broadcast Yourself” came from

2007-2008 was a really good time for KZread. There were reuploads of older content from Newgrounds and YTMND. "Current" content was KZread Poops, Halo 3 vs CoD, AVGN and Nostalgia Critic retrospectives, and just fun stuff being done for the sake of doing it. We were also right at the start of copyright takedowns (shoutout to WMG and Viacom!), and a bit too early for widespread monetisation and irl politics. It was also the year I created this account, so I'm _most definitely_ biased. :P

Love the video, so strange all this was a over a decade ago at this point. I do want to contend this idea that old KZread was cleaner. I mean the larger freedom was great for people getting to produce so much interesting content. But there was also to be honest, a lot of shock, gore, and gross-out stuff around that time period. I mean, remember when 2 girls 1 cup was one of the biggest videos on the platform? Or when that one video of literal terrorists beheading a US soldier went viral? I mean besides those extremes, there was also plenty of dirty, entertaining, adult skits, like Harry Potter puppet friends, or like any of the early abridged series like Yugioh Abridged, or Happy Tree Friends, etc.

I joined KZread around 2010-2011. I remember seeing KZread Rewind 2012 and being so bewildered, even though I didn't know almost any of the people in it. If what you describe is the golden age, I feel like I grew in the silver age. I grew up on Jacksepticeye, Pewdiepie, Markiplier and Smosh. I remember walking home everyday from school and sitting down to watch 2 hour gameplay videos, and since I didn't really watch much of anything else, I would feel bad if I missed one. Nowadays I don't really do this anymore because I prefer to play the games myself. I would say I miss that era but honestly now we live at the time with the most plethora of good KZread content. However, I do still miss a less strict, more carefree KZread, where you didn't have to worry about swearing or being politically correct all the time. KZread feels less like a counter-culture and way more corporate.

I’m actually one of those people who make littlest pet shop videos! It’s not exactly playing (though in some cases, and at the beginning of my channel, it is). Also, the same thing happened in our community, the first lps video of the style of the ones today was made in 2007, videos peaked in 2015, and now the community sadly has gotten a lot smaller due to Coppa and people getting older (though this does mean a rise in quality due to age). So these videos aren’t exactly as new as your video make them seem to be (unless you were saying this is one of the only video type close to what KZread was like in those times ) I still have fun making videos though and even if I don’t get very many views, I still continue. It just sucks that there’s some people who do it just for the views and money, which I think was never the point of KZread to begin with. Anyways, good video!

I would argue against that era being the "Golden Age" of KZread, as there were far fewer youtubers who had quality content, and thus everyone watched the same people, such as Smosh, =3, etc. Nowadays there are literally millions of youtubers pumping out incredible content about all sorts of things, including niches far too small to be worth making videos about in the past. Every month I discover new creators who make me ask myself "how did I not know about them before?" Mister Sweet being one of them.

It feels like there's a bit of a false dichotomy created at times...? Defining all old YT as 'great' just because it was unsophisticated feels wrong, but so does wholesale condemning current YT just because some of it is professional (personally, I applaud the fact some creators are able to make a living doing what they love!) My take would be that there's been plenty of crap around on the platform right from the start, and also some good stuff, so that YT monetization has just incentivised a different set of problems...? For example, the sheer volume of content now creates a challenge in its own right. As for whether the YT algorithm itself actually has any redeeming features...? That's a whole other discussion!! 🤦🏻‍♀️😜

I feel like rn is a great moment for some niche channels. Like Joel Haver said when he hit 1m subs after being an youtuber for so long: "well i find it funny. i'm like, i find what we're doing good and you're telling me there aren't hundreds if not thousands if not millions of people out there who might have the same sense of humor and same taste?"

OK. This is the video that got me to subscribe. I may have only watched 2 of them and it was a 50/50 chance between them, but this one won out. Thanks for the reminder. I miss old YT, and the layout too. For reference: born 1987.

I remember watching every video on KZread in an afternoon. If I remember correctly they were loaded in chronological order. And it was like two pages of videos. I'm watching this video now because of my frustrations with KZread. It feels like they took the you out of KZread. The you stands for you and me

I started in March 2007. We didn't get paid a penny. Believe it or not, around 2011 I accidentally erased all my videos and had to start over. I remember the first videos I made were with an old Kodak EZ 101 . I got it from a hardware store for $29. Once KZread started paying money, everything changed. I still make one or two videos a week. One thing KZread creators can do is to feature people on their channel. For years I have featured people on my channel and many of them have grown much larger than my channel. Although some never grew at all and stopped making videos. Even though I miss how KZread used to be at least we still have KZread as a creative outlet. I used to watch a lot of vine videos and was so sad when Vine closed. The amount and quality of comedy that was on vine was incredible. The funniest person I miss the most that was on KZread is Jenna marbles. She was hilarious and never seemed phony or just in it for the money.
