Фильм және анимация

Jeff explores all the VIPs buried at the Stockton Rural Cemetery in Stockton, Calif. Among them are legendary lawman Sheriff Thomas Cunningham, California Governor James Budd, actress Olympe Bradna, folklore legend Ruel Gridley, and David Terry, the man who killed a Senator in a duel and who was killed while assaulting a California Supreme Court justice. He also finds the grave of Russ Meyer, the man who made nudie films after World War II.

I've wandered around Stockton Rural Cemetery for many years now. I remember when several of the decorative and very expensive, crypt doors were being stolen. The door on the Rothenbush crypt, I believe, was first to go, but was later replaced with the plain, less expensive one you see there today. The Daggett crypt door was also stolen, as were the doors from the Stewart, Fraser, Barnhart, Hyatt, etc etc crypts. The Holt crypt door, seen in this video, isn't the original either, the original was damaged by the thieves, who tried to steal it. Unbelievable that this theft was allowed to happen. The decorative pieces from the Wagner crypt door were being removed around the same time period as the crypt doors were. Lots of history in this cemetery, some of which I added to Findagrave over the years, back when few were interested in this cemetery or it's history. A gentleman named, Glenn A. Kennedy, who was the secretary & treasurer of Rural Cemetery Association from 1950 to 1994, wrote a book about many of those who are interred at Stockton Rural Cemetery. I've always wanted a copy of it. It may have been a paperback or something, more of a local thing, I'm not sure. Good video. Keep 'em coming.

Glad to see you covered the "Other half" of the duel. Ben Holt also had a town named after him, Holt California, just down Highway 4 west of Stockton. Not much of a town today, but back in the 20's - 30's a booming farm community concern.

Great video! One of my favorite places to explore! David Terry has been one of my subjects in history for some time now. He was involved in so much California and Texas history! When I first visited his family plot I noticed Gridley"s memorial and was amazed of the grand tribute to a man I had never heard of! It is a full size statue of Gridley on a pedestal at least 15 feet tall with hundreds of soldiers` headstones facing it! JUST AMAZING! Gridley was the Man!

I have to give you much respect for doing this video. Both myself and my fiance' Roland have been visiting this cemetery for many years (he has been doing it longer than I have). He has photographed and entered hundreds (or more) of the graves there to Find-a-grave -- funny story, that is how we met, via cemeteries! Anyhow, after we started dating he started taking me there on walks, and I fell in love with this cemetery. I dedicated several years of research to finding the stories of many of those eternal residents, finding their photographs in old books and writing about them on my blogs, creating a Facebook page dedicated to that cemetery where we post photos and biographies of the residents there, and also entering their biographical info on Find-a-grave as well. I was so saddened to see the cemetery staff used a lot of my research for their website (without citing their sources) but most importantly they failed to really incorporate the more famous and important movers and shakers in Stockton's history that are buried there. That is the point I want to make with your video. You did that. You not only covered many of the very important (and sadly forgotten) people in Stockton Rural's history, but you also did it accurately and with respect. I really appreciate that. Thank you very much! - J'aime Rubio, Author

He did a good job on the video ! Still many more in the cemetery to cover though. Lots of history here. Stockton Rural still one of my favorites. As you know, I've been roaming around those headstones for many years now. Let's keep the Facebook page going and keep adding names to Findagrave. I'm glad to see others, like History Hunters, you and others, telling our American History. We really do live in a great country.

My husband and I went to put flowers and visit my mother, father and sister's graves since we had no been there for a long time - we live a few hundred miles away. After that we went to visit that Stockton Rural Cemetery which is located behind the cemetery where my relatives are buried - this was today and I left my purse under the front seat as far as it would go - the straps were visible - someone within 15 minutes broke our passenger side window, stole my purse with all my medical cards and ID and SS card and credit cards and all our money ($1592.00) !! We were around 100 yards from the vehicle but did not see anyone near the vehicle - except for one card with the headlights on park in front of our van and then leave very fast. There is a train track very near there and a train was going by so we heard nothing. Stockton is a very dangerous town and very crime ridden. People do not go there!!!!!

@@jbenziggy Funny you should talk about Sterling Price and Missouri. I grew up in Lexington, Mo, which was one of the towns on Price's march, and where Price and Mulligan fought. There's a marker in our city park marking the spot where the Confederates stole the Union's pay pouch. There's also a Confederate cannonball in one of our courthouse pillars. I love my hometown. It is seeping in history.

Benjamin Holt Drive is obviously named after him in North Stockton, connecting I-5 with Pacific Ave. and N. El Dorado St. James Budd was Governor when my paternal grandmother was born in 1895 in Stockton. She grew up near the intersection of E. Lindsay and N. Stanislaus Streets. My dad was also born in Stockton, so I have deep roots here.

Her Owen’s plot is just behind what the office staff referred to as Millionaires row, so I had to check it out also. Was amazed too at all those mausoleums and history from all the names so historic to Stockton. Really enjoyed the piece. Thank you!

Solari Ranch,Jack Tone Horse Ranch,Garamendi Ranch,,Ospital Ranch…history of the “brands”.. and history it’s registration..with the Ag Commissioner will give a history of the “multigenerational history “ of the trials of the great ranches… I used to stop in a cafe of the biggest cherry ranch owner.. along the road above Linden.. on the back road to Valley Springs… The cherry pie was compared to no other…. It was the Scolari ranch owners wife.. She passed on .. not before ..I listened to the farmers discuss .. that the “cherries did not have legs”.. by the ranch owners in the area.,, because it rained…The social life … the travails…their frustrations.. .of land owners…that shaped the “history” of central California due to the “longevity of the pioneer families The swindle of the local people in the water rights when those “rights were sold”.. New Hogan dam had water rights down river sold to investors from England..The contract had a “word”.. that gave the locals only the last 17,000 acre feet .. in its deception ..The water for locals went away… The last 17,000 acre feet had algae.. for the local community.. I lived there ..The water company described the “brown sedimented fallout in a full tub of water for my kids… as “potable”…. The only problem..when the door was shut.. the kids eyes burned from the chlorine in the small bathroom… The history of water in central California.. and the reservoirs… all tied to the great ranches and “England”.. grabbing water rights below the dam.

Bass and Hayes Foundry out of the Fort Worth suburbs. Wonder if that Texas lawman was related to my Uncle's partner?

I saw this video on your channel and thought "I bet the Sperry family will come up at some point". I like the mention of Ethel's marriage to W.H. Crocker, I'll add onto it: Ethel's younger sister Helena Elisabeth married "Prince" Andre Poniatowski of France in 1893, who was a promoter representing a number of French and British investors. Through family ties, Poniatowski and Crocker became acquainted and financed several projects together, including a predecessor to P.G.&E. called the Blue Lakes Water Company, and the Sierra Railway Company of California, the famous "Movie Railroad" featured in many notable Hollywood films, including "High Noon", "The Shadow Riders", "Unforgiven", and "Back to the Future Part III".

Hi Jeff, great history information 👍🏻as always. Enjoying the videos. Just wondering if you have yet to investigate old graveyards in Santa Cruz, CA.? It’s been over 25 years I cannot remember the place but it was by a park where the Pop Warner football was played and I took a walk and found an old graveyard nettled among tall cedar trees it was really cool to read the head stones, as the folks where from different countries. If the place comes to my memory I’ll send it onto you. Thanks again for all your awesome filming and trips. From Bakersfield😎
